Hullo Atuldom

The favourite singer of millions of Indian Mohammed Rafi was born on 24th December 1924. That means we, his fans, would have been celebrating his 97th birthday this year. But that was not to be. He just left this mortal world in July 1980 at the age of 55.

But we, his fans, need not be sad as he has left us a library full of music albums-both filmy and non-filmy. There will be many who will pay tributes to this great soul- the soft-spoken, gentle, kindhearted giant with their own personal touch. There will be programs across the various entertainment platforms that would highlight the music that Rafi saab was associated with.

For me, the day begins by listening to the Radio- Radio Ceylon to be exact- and figuring out which of the songs that are played there I have heard, and which I have never heard. Then I may move on to listening to other Radio stations.

Small Trivia:- Just found that Radio Ceylon is a year younger than Rafisaab. The precursor to Radio Ceylon- Colombo Radio – was formally launched on 16th December 1925.

I am sure we will be treated to the regular fare of Rafi hits like ‘o duniya ke rakhwaale’; ‘sukh ke sab saathi’; and possibly ‘ta ra ri ara ri ra ra ri’; ‘yeh chaand sa roshan chehera’; ‘pardesiyon se na ankhiyan milana,’ etc and a few more soulful numbers. We may also get a dose of his popular songs from the 70s like ‘o meri mehbooba, mehbooba mehbooba’, ‘kya hua tera wada’ etc. In between some channel will also squeeze in a ‘meri awaaz suno’; ‘dil ka soona saaz tarana dhoondega’; and some of his other great songs.

Additionally, we will have forwards from friends on WhatsApp and Facebook (the new age social platforms) that will give us links to sites that speak of the greatness of the Soul that Mohd. Rafi was.

Here is my tiny attempt to bring on-stage a song that was sung by the great Mohd Rafi under the baton of Ravi. It is a rarely heard song that was written by Verma Malik. It is from the 1977 release “Aadmi Sadak Ka”. Only one song from this film has been discussed on the blog so far and that was the most famous song of the movie viz. Aaj mere yaar ki shaadi hai. this was in 2013, eight years ago.

Today’s song features Zaheera, Shatrughan Sinha, Vikram (who was born Moin Uddin Shah), Sujit Kumar and Deven Verma. We see that Zaheera, Shatru and Vikram are in disguise.

‘Aadmi Sadak Ka’ was a produced and directed by Devendra Goel. It was a bilingual- made in Hindi and Marathi (called ‘Dost Asava Tar Asa’). It was the story of a well-placed family that has three sons (two of whom are married) and a daughter. The family falls into hard times when the patriarch dies, the family fortunes are usurped by the older two sons, at the behest of their wives, and the mother and the younger siblings are shown the door. The youngest son Chander (Vikram) takes up a job as a waiter and due to his good conduct keeps getting promoted and also becomes co-owner of the hotel. Now he is in competition with his older brothers and after the usual twists and turns the family is reunited and that brings the movie to ‘The End’.

With this post we also remember Deven Verma whose death anniversary was on 2nd December. He was born in Pune to Rajasthani father and Kutchi mother. He was son-in-law of Ashok Kumar, his wife was Rupa. He was a multi-talented actor who was appreciated in comic roles, but when I saw “Devar” (1966) I was stumped by the serious character he played. Devendu Verma (birth name of Deven Verma) died of a heart attack and kidney failure in 2014.
Here is the song with Anuradha Paudwal and Deven Verma singing with Mohd. Rafi.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2009-19) – Song No. 8
————————————————

When our dear Atul ji recently started an ‘innovative’ initiative under the ‘ten-year challenge’ or ‘Blog ten-year challenge’ I had mentioned it in my comments on the ‘first song’ in this series that, I would try to share lyrics if not articles as possible in this series. I had also mentioned that I could see a few opportunities for me in the coming days of this month. That was because I was browsing the posts of February’2009 on my own.

Today I have this opportunity to share a ‘song post’ under this series. And since its from ‘seventies’ I am happy to share it here.

Ten years back, on this day i.e. on 23rd February 2009, we had songs from the movies ‘Rajkumar-1964’, ‘Milan-1967’, ‘Chor Machaaye Shor-1974’, ‘Call Girl-1974’, ‘Badi Bahan-1949’, and ‘Dushman-1939’ posted on the blog. All the moves mentioned above, except ‘Call Girl-1974’ have already had all their songs posted on the blog and in turn achieved ‘Yippeeee’ ed status on the blog. 🙂

So, we have ‘Call Girl-1974’ remaining to be covered for all songs on the blog. And so far, only one song of this movie has been posted on the blog. And, I think that the one song posted was the only well-known song from the movie or we can say that the movie is identified with this one song only i.e. ‘ulfat me zamaane ki har rasm ko thukraao’ sung by Kishore Kumar.

However, when I was going through the songs available from this movie and song list of this movie in HFGK-Vol-V, I found that the above song is actually a ‘multiple version song’ sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar. So, I am also sharing the Lata Version for this song separately and requesting Atul ji to kindly update it in the post please. This song was posted on 23rd February 2009 and there was only comment on it on the same day by Greta Memsaab. The second comment was by Mr. Chandrakant H Shah on 08th Dec’2016 and he had mentioned about this song being a multiple version song. However somehow this has been remained to be updated.

I too remember this song ‘ulfat me zamaane ki har rasm ko thukraao’ as a Kishore Kumar song only and I think the version was not that much popular then. I had not watched this movie until now, so can’t say much about that. Except I vaguely remember to have heard this Kishore Kumar song on radio frequently and thereafter its memory was revived when I had started collecting cassettes in 1985-86. In 1987-88 after the death of Kishore Kumar HMV has released an album titled ‘A tribute to the Legend’ (it was a four-cassette set) and this song was included in this album.

As per HFGK listing of songs of this movie the Lata Mangeshkar version appears first (at number 3 in the movie) and the Kishore Kumar version appears later (at number five in the movie).

‘Call Girl-1974’ was directed by Vijay Kapoor for Mukesh Movies, Bombay. It was produced by Mukesh Khanna.

It had Zahira, Vikram, Iftekhar, Urmila Bhatt, Shekhar Purohit, Minoo Mehtab, Reddi, Mansaram, Satyajeet, Shefali, Jankidas and Kuljeet.
Heena Kausar make a special appearance in this movie.

Jalal Agha and Nazneen, Krishan Dhawan and Paintal have friendly appearances in this movie. Story of this movie was by Mukesh Movies Story Department. Editing of this movie was done by B.S. Glaad. Screenplay and dialogues of this movie were written by K. A. Abbas.

This movie had total seven songs including one multiple version song and one cabaret dance music. All the songs in this movie were written by Naqsh Lyallpuri and music was composed by Sapan-Jagmohan. Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar and Ranu Mukherjee who gave their voices to the songs in this movie had one solo song each, and there was one duet sung by Asha Bhonsle and Kishore Kumar and one by Kishore Kumar and Ranu Mukherjee.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 28.05.1974 with restricted viewing certificate (A).

Since I have not watched this movie, I can’t say much about it or the songs from this movie. I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its songs.

Let us now enjoy the today’s song which is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Kishore Kumar and picturized on Vikram and Zahira.

The song is a nice one though it must not be popular or heard that much as the other song from this movie.

Mukti (1977) is Bindiya Goswami‘s debut film. From the looks of it this song most probably heralds her arrival on the screen. This also seems to be a song, which shows how the once small daughter has grown up and has stepped into her youth.

The movie “Call Girl”‘ (1974) is all but forgotten now, and even the music directors Sapan Jagmohan failed to make it big, but one song from this movie “ulfat me zamaane ki har rasm ko thukraao” became reasonably popular.
