Today 8th September 2025 is the ninety-third birthday of legendary singer of Hindi Films – Asha Bhonsle. On this occasion we are celebrating her birthday by presenting some songs sung by her.
The song which I am presenting in this post is from the 1986 movie ‘Jeeva’. This movie is best remembered for the classic song ‘roz roz aankhon taley’ composed by R.D.Burman, written by Gulzar and sung by Asha Bhonsle and Amit Kumar. Various stories on internet about this song mention that initially it was supposed to be a solo song by Asha Bhonsle. But on listening to this song Sanjay Dutt felt that he should also have lines to lip-sync in this song, and thus an extra stanza sung by Amit Kumar was added to this song.
The trio of Gulzar-Pancham-Asha Bhonsle has given us many timeless classic songs which have become immortal songs in the history of Hindi Film Cinema.
Today’s movie ‘Jeeva’ was a ‘Rupam Pictures’ production. It was produced by Romu N Sippy and directed by Raj N Sippy. The movie had Sanjay Dutt, Mandakini, Vidya Sinha, Dr Shree Ram Lagoo, Amjad Khan, Shakti Kapoor, Sachin, Rita Rani Kaul, Satyen Kappu, Anupam Kher, Gulshan Grover, Pran, Beena, Harish Magan, Amol Sen, Om Gosai, Ved Akash, Vilas Rakte, Birbal, Dharma, Randhir Singh, Maqsood, Abu Wanninkar and others in it. This movie has five songs written by Gulzar. Music for this movie was composed by R.D. Burman. The singers for this movie were Asha Bhonsle, Suresh Wadkar and Amit Kumar.
This movie made its debut on this blog on 03.07.2013 with its song ‘roz roz aankhon taley’. This song which became a cult classic later was not appreciated when the movie was released and that is enough to understand what would have been the fate of the other songs of this movie. They were easily forgotten like the movie which didn’t perform well at the box office. However, the song ‘roz roz aankhon taley’ went on to become popular later and was recognized as one of the best compositions of Pancham.
If one goes through the list of the annual hits of Binaca Geetmala of 1986 one would find that songs such as ‘de de dil kee pappi’ (Giraftaar), ‘pyaar hamaara amar rahega (Muddat), ‘ham to tamboo mein bamboo’ (Mard), ‘Ghoonghtaa khol na’(Suhaagan) and the duet from ‘Utsav’ were the songs having the voice of Asha Bhonsle which made it to this list. One song from the movie ‘Jeeva-1986’ however made it to the annual list of Binaca Geetmala of ‘1987’ and this song was ‘dil pukaare ae jeeva re aa re’ sung by Asha Bhonsle at 11th position.
After a long gap, we are presenting the second song from this movie ‘Jeeva-1986’. Lyrics for this song were sent by Prakashchandra. This song is a mujraa song. Rita Rani Kaul is seen lip-syncing the song (as informed by Prakashchandra).Sanjay Dutt, Pran, Sachin, Anupam Kher, Gulshan Grover, Amjad Khan, Beena and others are also seen in the picturisation.
