2025 marks the 51st year in the entertainment industry for Shabana Azmi, not counting films that she may have been associated with during her training at FTII. Her ‘Parinay’ released on 1st January 1974; her debut film Shyam Benegal’s “Ankur’ is also a 1974 film. The last film starring Shabana Azmi came in 2023, actually there were two ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’ & ‘Ghoomer’- I have seen both and as usual Shabana Azmi (the actor) cannot be missed. There is an upcoming film ‘Lahore 1947’ set against the backdrop of partition of India.
I am stating all of this to show the level at which she is active as far as acting is concerned.
Additionally, we can find her standing for various social issues, causes (like fight against AIDS), fight against communalism, even being vocal about religious extremism.
I have read somewhere that post the 11th September 2001 attack, she opposed the idea of the grand mufti of the Jama Masjid, calling upon the Muslims of India to join the people of Afghanistan, in their fight by retorting that the leader go there alone.
This I have written to show that Shabana Azmi is a socially conscious, concerned and committed citizen too who doesn’t mind talking her mind when necessary.
This experienced actress who was seen in neo-realistic parallel cinema at the start of her career also made her presence felt in films like ‘Sparsh’, ‘Masoom’, ‘Amba’, Godmother’ etc which were not the typical commercial films but subjects which were appealing to the paying-public. She has also appeared in films where she was part of huge ensemble star-casts and we can remember her trying to find her feet in them- Manmohan Desai’s ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’ & ‘Parvarish’ to just name two.
On the occasion of Shabana Azmi’s 75th birthday today we shall see a song from the 1990 released Mohan Kumar produced & directed “Amba” where she played mother to Anil Kapoor & Kanwaljeet Singh (who are about her age) and mom-in-law to Kiran Juneja & Meenakshi Seshadri.
Shabana Azmi’s character was of a widowed mother, full of principles, who doesn’t flinch when it comes to disciplining her sons going to the extent of having her son (Kanwaljeet) arrested for the offense of molesting & killing the daughter of their trusted servant (Sujit Kumar). She even testifies against her which leads to his conviction & sends him to the gallows.
Amba had songs written by Anand Bakshi and composed by Laxmi-Pyare.
Mohammad Aziz, Anuradha Paudwal, Kavita Krishnamurty, Alka Yagnik, Suresh Wadkar, Sukhwinder Singh, Manhar Udhas were the playback singersused. The film had, possibly, one of the last songs of Kishore Kumar.
This was the last film that Mohan Kumar directed.
Shabana Azmi is a Padma Shri (1988) & Padma Bhushan (2012) award winner as also a winner of numerous other awards including 5 National Award for Best Actress in her career of over 160 films. She was also a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha in 1997.
Wishing this multifaceted talented lady Good Health & happiness and eagerly awaiting her next outing in front of the camera.
