‘The Gold Medal’ (1984) was produced by Sham Behl under his banner, Time Films and was directed by Ravi Nagaich. The cast included Jeetendra and Raakhi in the lead roles supported by Shatrughan Sinha, Premnath, Bindu, Faryal, Jaishree T, David, K N Singh, Raja Pranjpe, Sundar, Janakidas, Keshav Rana, Jagdish Raj, Gulshan Bawra. Brahm Bhardwaj, Prabhu Dayal, Madhumati etc. Dharmendra made a ‘priceless’ appearance in the film as an union leader. The film belongs the genre of ‘James Bond’ type of spy thriller in the Indian setting.

The film seems to be in the making for a long time. It is said that the film was planned sometime in the second half of 1960s with Rajendra Kumar and Saira Banu in the lead roles. Incidentally, film’s producer, Sham Behl (elder brother of producer, Ramesh Behl) is the brother-in-law of Rajendra Kumar. Later, the lead pair was changed to Jeetendra and Raakhi and shooting of the film commenced in 1969.

While it is not known as to why the lead pair’s replacement took place, I recall reading in film magazines those days that Rajendra Kumar and Saira Banu were rumoured to be close to each other which Naseem Banu, the mother of Saira Banu seemed to have resented. Also, sometime in 1966, Saira Banu got married to Dilip Kumar. Probably, these two factors may have led to their replacement. Coincidentally, Rajendra Kumar did not paire with Saira Banu in any films after her marriage except those already signed before her marriage. Jeetendra had emerged as a star after the tremendous box office success of his film, ‘Farz’ (1967) directed by Ravi Nagaich. The common genre of both the films with same director may have influenced the producer, Sham Behl to pick up Jeetendra.

The film suffered production issues delaying its completion. The film’s audio song album was released in 1975. The film got Censor Board Certificate sometime in 1979 for Adult viewing. However, the delay resulted in the staleness of the story which seems to have kept the film distributors away. The film was finally released on March 22, 1984.

The story is about a gang whose members are identified by a logo of a gold medal led by an unidentified Supremo. The gang deals in black marketing, drug trafficking, smuggling of gold and antiques, creating social unrest, communal violence, breaking strikes in industries etc. To tackle the menace of the gang, an undercover police officer joins the gang under the supervision of the CBI Head. The undercover officer earns the trust of the gang’s Supremo during which time, he comes to know about their intricate network. The information helps CBI and police to smash the gang.

The story of the film in detail is as under:

A union leader, Acharya (Dharmendra) is killed during an orchestrated riot by a gang while he was leading a huge rally of workers. One of the persons who instigated the riot is apprehended by a worker, Shatrughan (Shatrughan Sinha) but the appredhended person is killed by a gun shot before he can be made to talk. However, a gold medal is found in his possession. The matter has now gone to CBI Head (David). To pay tribute to union leader, Acharya, a huge gathering is held in a park. Singh (K N Singh) the operating person of an unidentified leader of gold medal gang who is also doubled up as a owner of a factory, sees it as an opportunity to create a communal riot which he does during which many people get killed. The idea is to create a situation whereby the curfew is imposed and his factory gets temporary closed. The resultant production loss gives him an opportunity to sell his product in the black market.

CBI Head summons Gopal (Jeetendra) and entrusts the investigation of the gold medal gang to him with an instruction that both of them should remain incommunicado and messages, if any, should be passed on through an intermediary with a code word. In the meanwhile, Sharughan, the new union leader meets Singh for compensation to those who lost life in the riots. Instead, Singh offers him a huge money to instigate the strike in his factory. Disgusted with his offer, Shatrughan walks out challenging him of dire consequences if he tries to create the rift between workers.

Gopal has already on his assignments and has booked a room in a hotel on a long term basis. In the same hotel, Kitty (Faryal), who works for Singh, has also taken a room in the same hotel to keep track of Gopal. She tries to be pally with him with an intention to seduce him so that Singh can send his henchmen to abduct Gopal. However, Gopal leaves her room before the henchmen arrives While returning back to his hotel room, Gopal inadverstantly goes in a different room in the hotel in which Shobha (Raakhi) stays. After some initial misunderstaning, Shobha is convinced that Gopal has mistakenly entered her room thinking that it was his room.

Gopal returns to his room with Shobha and is surprised to find CBI Head sitting in his room. It turns out that Shobha is also an under-cover CBI officer. He has urgently come to reveal him that there is a well-knitted gold medal gang with a very influential boss (Singh) whose identity is not even known to the gang members. However, a gang member who was serioulsy injured and later succumbed to his injuries has revealed that his sister, Bindu (Bindu) works for the boss. He directs Gopal to search for Bindu who can give him some lead about the boss of the gold medal gang. He also assigns Shobha to be a conduit between them and to avoid any suspicion, they should behave like a romantically linked couple.

Gopal goes searching for Bindu whom he finds in a club as a cabret dancer. He meets her in her room and apprises of her brother’s death. She reveals that her boss keeps a diary in which he notes down his contacts. Perhaps that can give him some clue. However, Bindu is caught trying to steal the diary. He forces her to make Gopal a bait for him in the guise of handing over the diary. She complies with his demand but she is shot dead by Singh in her room in which Gopal is waiting to collect the diary. Singh dials the police station. Gopal escapes from her room and police is suspecting him to be the killer of Bindu. The CBI Head see an opportunity with this development for Gopal to join the gang in the pretext of mutual benefits – he wants to escape from the police dragnet and Singh wants his activities are kept away from the police. To test his loyalty, Gopal is sent to a remote location and report to the gang’s Supremo Thakur Ranvir Singh (Premnath) who stays in his den with his henchmen. in a seccluded place. Within few days, Gopal is able to earn the initial trust of Thakur Ranvir Singh.

The real loyalty test for Gopal is when he is entrusted with arranging Thakur Ranvir Singh’s meeting with Shobha about whom he has heard a lot about her beauty. Gopal arranges the meeting and Shobha invites Thakur Ranvir Singh to come with Gopal where a dancer (Jaishree T) will entertain him. Having successfully done, Thakur entrusts Gopal of killing the CBI Head based on the information about his movements. CBI Head is given the prior information about his planned ‘killing’ byn Shobha. Gopal with two armed persons given by Thakur Ranvir are on their mission to ‘kill’ CBI Head.

Gopal returns with the news that CBI Head has been ‘killed’. Thakur Ranvir is happy and celebration starts during which he announces the Gold Medal to be given to Gopal thus formally inducting him in the gang. However, at that time, Gopal’s secret gets out when Kittu and Singh both confirm that CBI Head is alive and he is coming with a big police forces to capture them. Thakur Ranvir Singh runs away taking a brief case containing Rs.50 lakhs. However, both Gopal and police forces corner him. He runs away to terrace from where he commits suicide by jumping from the terrace. The gang is smashed.

An interesting feature of the film is that while Jeetendra repeats his ‘Farz’ (1967) type performance, Premnath mostly repeats his performance which he had done in ‘Johny Mera Naam’ (1970). But these styles seems to become stale for 1980s audience. Generally, it is observed that the inordinate delay in completing/releasing films get the box office thumbs down barring very few exceptions like ‘Mughal-e-Azam’ (1960) and ‘Paakeezah’ (1972), ‘The Gold Medal’ (1984) was no exception. It failed very badly on the box office front. The story, the style of presentation, continuity problems render such films out of sync with audience’s expectations. I was surprised to observe that Raakhi had less exposures in the film than usually a lead actress gets in a film. For instance, both Jeetendra and Raakhi have to behave like a romantically linked couple to avoid the suspicion of they being the undercover agents of CBI. But there is not a single romantic scene picturised on them. It may be due to the fact that by the time film’s shooting was resumed, Raakhi had become a busy star depriving the producer the required number of her dates to complete her character in the film. If the film was completed on schedule, perhaps it would have repeated the success of ‘Farz’ (1967) because it is still an entertaining film loaded with the box office formula of early 1970s.

The film had six songs written by Hasrat Jaipuri (2), Verma Malik (2), Indeevar (1) and Raj Kavi Tulsi (1) which were set to music by Shankar-Jaikishan. I present the first song, ‘main tumko dekhtee hoon’ rendered by Asha Bhosle on the words of Hasrat Jaipuri. The song is picturised on Jaishree T while Premnath, Jeetendra and Raakhi are enjoying her dance song. The tune of the mukhda in the song sounds similar to ankhiyon ko rahne de in ‘Bobby’ (1973).

The context of the song is that Premnath has got the information that Shobha is a beautiful girl and wants to meet her. The work is entrusted to Jeetendra who has joined him as his gang member. Shobha agrees but requests him to come to her place where she would arrange a dance by a courtesan, Jaishree T. He agrees and the dance takes place somewhat in similar situation as it was in ‘Johny Mera Naam’ 1970 when Premnath is entertained by Padma Khanna.
