‘Shaque’ (1976) was a psychological suspense thriller, jointly produced by N B Kamat with Vikas Desai and was jointly directed by Aruna-Vikas (Arunaraje Patil and Vikas Desai). The cast included Vinod Khanna and Shabana Azmi in the lead roles supported by Utpal Dutt, Bindu, Arvind Deshpande, Suhas Bhalekar with Farida Jalal and Durga Khote making their guest appearances. This was Aruna-Vikas first film as the director who had started their filmy career as editor and advertising filmmaker.

The film is about an incidence which has happened 10 years back when Vinod Khanna’s office colleagues, Kale gets killed while the office locker is seen broken open. The killer is identified as another office colleague, Arvind Deshpande. With blood strain on his shirts, Vinod returns home and explains the situation to his wife Shabana Azmi. Ten years later, Shabana receives a letter from Utpal Dutt, one of ex-office colleagues of Vinod who puts the blame of killing Kale on Vinod. First, she takes it as a prank. But her empty mind recalling the past events concerning Vinod creates a lingering doubt whether Vinod is really guilty of murdering his office colleague. Coincidentally, Vinod’s financial position has considerably improved after this incidence. Since she loves Vinod, she starts her own investigations when Vinod is on office tour. The investigation gives her circumstantial evidences which gradually demolish her trust in Vinod and strongly starts believing that Vinod is a murderer. They drift apart and are in the verge of a divorce. Since both loves each other sincerely, Vinod decides to investigate in his own way which leads to the unwrapping of the suspense as to who was the killer and his motive of creating a rift between Vinod and his wife.

The story of the film is as under:

Vinod Joshi (Vinod Khanna) and Meena Joshi (Shabana Azmi) are happily married for 12 years with a school going son. The couple who had started their married life in a difficult financial condition are now financially well-off with Vinod working in a company with good salary with all the comforts in Mumbai. They have a beach house at Alibaug. Vinod like to avoid discussing his past lower-class life.

As a part of his office work, Vinod goes on tour for few days and Meena has dropped his son at the station for his boarding school. On return, Meena finds a letter sent by one, Maan Singh (Utpal Dutt). The letter reveals that about 10 years back, Kale, an office assistant in reality, was killed by Vinod and he is a witness to his killing. The letter further states that Vinod had siphoned off a large amount of cash from the office locker and became rich. He made another office clerk, Subramaniam a scapegoat. Now his consciousness is not allowing him to keep quite. He is thinking of reporting the matter to police. Meena does not take the letter seriously thinking that someone has played the prank.

Soon the seed of suspicion gets sown in Meena’s mind. She starts relating Vinod’s dislike for discussing his fast with Kale’s murder case. She remembers him telling her that he has gone through bad financial patches in his life and he will ensure that his son will not go through it. To financially secure their son, will Vinod stoop to so low as to kill his office colleague to loot the cash? But in her another mind, she feels that in no way Vinod can do this type of crime. She decides not to bring the letter to the notice of Vinod when he returns from his tour.

After returning from the tour, Vinod finds Meena’s behaviour has changed in that she does not take any interest in talks and shows absent-mindedness. One day, Vinod gets to see the letter in a drawer and realises the reason for Meena’s changed behaviour. He reveals to Meena that Maan Singh was working in his office as a clerk and 10 years back, he had tried to blackmail him. Maan Singh is a fraud and if what he says is true then why he has not reported the matter to the police. With this explanation, Meena is satisfied and Vinod expects the normalisation in their relationship.

But within few days, Vinod reads a newspaper report that the police has not been able to lay their hands on the cash stolen from the locker. Now, Meena observes Vinod in tension and sometimes he gets irritated with her for no reasons. Meena has now started thinking as to how they have improved their financial position soon after the judgement of the case in which Vinod is proved innocent and Subramanyam is held responsible for killing Kale and is languishing in prison for the last 10 years. She asks Vinod for the explanation as to how he got so much money after the judgement of the case. He explains that he had earned the money through his stock exchange operations. Vinod feels that a letter from Maan Singh has created so much doubt in the mind of Meena that their 12 years of marriage is facing rough weather.

While Vinod has gone on tour for few days on office work, Meena decides to investigate the matter. First, she goes to the archives of old newspapers which suggests to her that the case has been decided against Subramaniam on the basis of the testimony of Vinod who has heard the name of Subramaniam from Kale before he passed away. On that night, only three persons were sitting late in the office – Kale, Subramaniam and Vinod. Next, she meets Subramaniam’s wife (Farida Jalal) thinking that she would be living in comfort because of the money he has stolen. But to her surprise, Subramaniam’s family has been living from hands to mouths ever since he has been imprisoned.

Next day, Meena visits Maan Singh’s house where she sees him bedridden and short of money to take care of his illness. He reveals that both he and Vinod needed money. Hence, they planned the heist. However, the presence of Kale at that point who saw the money being taken out of the locker left no option for Vinod but to kill Kale. Vinod has been paying him occasionally some money but currently, he has stopped paying him. He resigned from his job because he was afraid of Vinod who can kill him like he killed Kale. Out of pity, before leaving his house, Meena gives him some money for his medical expenses. She goes and meet Vinod’s share broker who confirmed that about 10 years back, Vinod has given him a large amount to invest in shares because of which he has become rich.

With all her investigations, Meena’s suspicion on Vinod of murdering Kale gets stronger. Both have drifted apart with hardly any conversations between them. Despite their inner turmoil, both loved each other in their inner minds. So, Meena was not contemplating of divorce as a panacea. At the same time, living with a murderer creates uneasiness in her. Meena decides to commit suicide in such a way that it should not look like a suicide for the sake of her son. She convinces Vinod to spend the weekend in their beach house in Alibaug to work for reconciliation. From the beach house, Meena goes to the beach in the pretext of swimming. However, she walks deep into see for committing suicide by drowning. Vinod watches her getting tangled in a series of waves. He runs and rescues Meena from drowning.

With this incidence, Vinod decides to investigate the intention of Maan Singh in creating a rift in his hitherto happy life. He comes to know that Maan Singh was taking revenge against him because few days back, he had refused to see him in the office. In a fits of anger, he wrote the letter to Meena. But he did not expect that his letter would create such a big problem in the family life of Vinod. Later, when Maan Singh’s live-in partner (Bindu) is found killed outside his house, the case becomes more complicated as once again, the Vinod becomes the prime suspect because he was having a heated argument with Maan Singh just before her murder and his house key had accidentally fallen in her house. However, the further police investigations proves the involvement of Maan Singh in killing Kale. He confesses of stealing the cash from the locker when Kale suddenly appeared. Out of fear, he used the office paper-cutter knife with an intention of injuring him. Unfortunately, the knife hit his throat and . Vinod came running to revive Kale when he uttered the name pof Subramaniam. Kale died before Vinod could admit in a hospital. Maan Singh lost the bag of cash while running away fearing the police.

The film ends with Vinod and Meena deciding to financially help Subramaniam‘s family after his release from the prison based on Maan Singh’s confession as it was on the basis of Vinod’s wrong perception as a witness that Subramaniam was given the life imprisonment for killing Kale.

During the making of the film, music director Vasant Desai, who was also the uncle of film’s co-producer, Vikas Desai, lost his life in a lift accident in his building. At that time, one song had still remained to be recorded apart from the background music. Aruna-Vikas did not wish to have any other music director’s song in the film. So, they picked up one of the tunes of the recorded song of Vasant Desai which was not used in any other film. Gulzar wrote the lyrics to the tune and the song, ek dil hai ek jaan hai was created with the instructions to Enoch Daniels to make music arrangements in the style of Vasant Desai. Enoch Daniels and Aruna-Vikas also created the background music which was majorly based on some of Vasant Desai’s old melodious compositions with the help of his music assistants.[Source: Autobiography of Arunaraje Patil, ‘Freedom, My Story’ (2017)].

The film had five songs written by Gulzar (4) and Hafiz (1) and which were set to music by Vasant Desai. Two songs have been covered on the Blog. I present the third song, ‘do nainon ke pankh lagaa kar’ written by Gulzar and rendered by Kumari Faiyyaz which is stated to be based on Raag Kalyani. It is a background song picturised on Vinod Khanna and Shabana Azmi. The video clip of the song (part-1) starts with antara as the Censor Board is stated to have taken objection of the picturisation of the mukhda part of the song. Part-2 of the song covers only a part of the mukhda of the song when Shabana Azmi imagines Vinod Khanna reaching to her by riding on the horse through the sea water.

The context of the song is that Meena (Shabana Azmi) having been convinced that her husband, Vinod (Vinod Khanna) is the murderer of his office colleague, Kale, she cannot live with him in fear. At the same time, the divorce is not an option for her as she loves him. With this dilemma, Meena walks into the sea with a view to commit suicide by drowning (she does not want it to look like suicide for the sake of her son). However, Vinod comes out to the beach looking for Meena when he sees her getting engulfed by sea waves. He runs into the sea and rescues her. He carries her in his beach house and put her on the deewan. She is shivering. He caresses her and kisses her forehead while this song gets played in the background.

The playback singer of the song, Kumari Faiyyaz (also known as Faiyyaz Shaikh) is a classically trained singer, Kathak/Bharatanatyam dancer and singer-actor in Marathi theatres and films. She has also acted in some Marathi and Hindi TV serials. She is highly respected artists of Marathi theatre who has worked with some of the doyens of Marathi theatre personalities. I have always liked her unique soulful voice. I intend to write a separate article on her shortly.

I recommend to listen the song on the audio clip to enjoy the ornamentations in the song created by the singer. For example note how the singer takes a ‘turn’ when she sings ‘door se’ and ‘honee se’ in the song. Also, the piano prelude and interludes sound good on the audio clip. In the video clip, apart from being the partial song, it gets played in the background affecting the sound quality of the song.

Lyrics (Based on Audio Clip):

do nainon ke ae ae ae
do nainon ke pankh lagaa kar
mann paakhee udd jaaye..ae
haathh chudaa kar
haathh chhudaa kar door chalaa hai
door se paas bulaaye..ae
do nainon ke ae ae

jaane boojhe chehre mann ko
jaane boojhe chehre mann ko

phir pehchaan karaaye ae ae

neel gagan mein saagar dekhe

Sadanandji

Thanks for the post. I have not seen ‘Shaque’ or heard any songs of that film. I have known about the film which had good reviews. It is a pleasing song. I appreciate the efforts of the team to use Vasant Desai’s tune to record this song.
