“Manmohan” (1936) was Bombay film industry’s copycat version of Calcutta film industry’s “Devdas”(1935). “Manmohan” (1936) was produced by Chimanlal Desai and directed by Mehboob Khan for Sagar Movietone, Bombay. This movie had Bibbo, Surendra, Yakub, Ashalata, Ram Marathe, Bhudo Advani, Zia Sarhadi etc in it.

The story, as recounted by our beloved inhouse encyclopeadia, Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh while covering another song from the movie, is:

Ashok (Surendra) is an artist in love with Vimala (Bibbo). On learning that she is to marry Jagdish (Yakub) he is devastated and paints her portraits which become popular. He starts drinking and finds comfort with another woman. Soon his family wealth starts dwindling. Vimala, who is married by now, tries to help him with her husband’s efforts. However, Ashok misunderstands the overture, leading to tragedy for him.

Surendra was touted as “Saigal of Bombay” and he was made to sing in Saigal style. Curiously, “Manmohan”(1936) too became a big hit like “Devdas”(1935). Songs of “Manmohan”(1936) became hugely popular just like that of “Devdas”(1935).

The most popular song of “Manmohan”(1936) was Tumhi ne mujhko prem sikhaaya and its records were in high demand. 2.5 lakh copies of its records were sold in one year

“Manmohan”(1936) had ten songs in it. Three songs (including two Surendra-Bibbo duets) have been covered in the blog.

Here is a Surendra solo song from the movie. This song, unlike the abovementioned timeless classic song, ended up getting forgotten and has become a rare song. This song is penned by Zia Sarhadi. Music is composed by Ashok Ghosh who was assisted by Anil Biswas as music arranger.

This melancholic song has just one stanza and it has been sung without taking a pause.
