“Jawani Zindabad” (1990) was a film that has been listed in the romantic/ drama genre. It was a remake of the 1988 Kannada film ‘ Avale Nanna Hendthi’.
The film had Aamir Khan & Farha Naaz playing the lead with Asrani, Kadar Khan, Javed Jaffrey, Rohini (from South Indian films), Utpal Dutt, Shobha Khote, Rajesh Puri, Upasana Singh, Sushma Seth, Satyen Kappu, Chandrasekhar, Mehmood Jr., Birbal, Shail Chaturvedi, Jagdish Raj, Viju Khote, and many known faces playing supporting characters. Anand Milind were tghe music directors for songs written by Sameer & Verma Malik. Sadhana Sargam, Amit Kumar, Suresh Wadkar, Kavitha Krishnamurthy, Anuradha Paudwal, Udit Narayan, & Mohd Aziz were the playback singers used for the six songs. The film was produced by Jay Mehta & Pranlal Mehta with Arun Bhatt as the director.
“Jawani Zindabad” had a simple story of the youth trying to enforce the principle of “NO DOWRY Taken or Given” at marriages on their elders.
Aamir Khan (Shashi) marries Farha (Sugandha) without taking any dowry much against his mother Sharda’s (Sushma Seth) wishes. He also arranges his sister’s (Rohini) marriage to Javed Jaffrey (Ravi) son of Utpal Dutt & Shubha Khote, without talking about dowry which angers the greedy man. The story then meanders towards ‘THE END’ after a lot of drama because Utpal Dutt & wife try to extract dowry by all kinds of underhand methods but they come to their senses when their son Ravi is harmed & lands up in hospital instead of Shashi.
Kadar Khan (born on 22nd October 1937) played the character of Balmukut Mama Banarasi & Asrani played his son. Today, we shall see a song where Utpal Dutt & Shubha Khote are being given a EARFUL at the wedding reception of Asrani & Upasana Singh (Rossie) by Shashi & Balmukut Mama in the voices of Amit Kumar & Suresh Wadkar. We can see Sushma Seth sitting among the wedding guests with Farha & Birbal on the stage next to the dulha-dulhan.
Satinder Khosla was the birth name of actor ‘Birbal’. He was given the name Birbal by Manoj Kumar & Raj Khosla during the making of ‘Anita’ as they felt that his original name did not sound filmy. He was born on October 28, 1938 in Gurdaspur. He passed away in 2023 of a cardiac arrest in Mumbai on September 12.
I asked google to tell me the number of films that Kadar Khan & Asrani have acted together. We all know that, in the initial years of his career, Asrani was a constant in many films that starred Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan, Jeetendra etc. But the 1980s saw Asrani teaming up with Kadar Khan & Shakti Kapoor, that is why I tried to find a number. While both actors were extremely prolific and beloved in the industry, they differed in their upbringing, major hits, family size, and net worth, but their legacies remain equally celebrated in Indian cinema.
No prizes for guessing my sudden interest in the two actors. It was Kadar Khan’s birth anniversary four days back. I was looking for a song featuring the actor (a day or two prior) when the sad news of Asrani’s passing away was broken on the news on the night of 20th October. It was a shocker. It seems he had been cremated the same evening in the presence of his family & a few close relatives. He didn’t want any fanfare, he wanted to go quietly. This was as per his wishes (as reported to the channels by his family & secretary).
Since that evening, I have been reading the reactions of all the film industry insiders, who have acted or interacted with the actor at any point in their careers. Every single person has only spoken highly about Govardhan Asrani (that was his birthname). He was still very active & almost died with makeup on. There are about 10 of his films in underproduction stage.
All the news channels, newspapers & writeups talk of the character he played in ‘Sholay’ but he had played other iconic characters too. He had also sung in the film ‘Alaap’; I am sure there may be more songs to which he lent his voice. He was also a producer and director.
