Hullo Atuldom

“Bad Aur Badnaam” (1984) which was produced & written by K.D. Shorey and directed by Firoze Chinoye, had music by Laxmikant- Pyarelal for songs that were written by Anand Bakshi. Lata Mangeshkar, Shabbir Kumar, Suresh Wadkar, Anuradha Paudwal & Shailendra Singh were the playback singers used for the six songs.

The film’s cast was headed by Parveen Babi, Sanjeev Kumar, Anita Raaj and Shatrughan Sinha. Dr. Shreeram Lagoo, Kadar Khan, Jagdeep, Urmila Bhatt, Madhu Malini, Madhu Malhotra, Kamal Kapoor, Jagdish Raj (was not a cop in this film), Raj Mehra, Ram Mohan, Pinchoo Kapoor, Tom Alter and I. S. Johar played important supporting characters.

This was the last film in which I.S. Johar acted. He passed away in 1984, before the release of this film, and his voice had to be dubbed by a dubbing artist. It seems even Keshto Mukherjee was to be in the film, he had shot for a few days but was replaced after his death. And, finally, this was among the last few films of Sanjeev Kumar. Sanjeev Kumar’s 1st heart attack delayed the completion of this film.

“Bad Aur Badnaam” was the basically the story of the relations between India and an ‘imaginary’ neighbouring country – Ringhania. Shatrughan Sinha & Sanjeev Kumar play covert agents of India & Ringhania respectively. Kadar Khan, Kamal Kapoor, Raj Mehra, etc are the cause of a strain in the relations between the two countries. Parveen Babi plays a super undercover agent; meaning the male agents are unaware that she is an agent. Anita Raj is a doctor who falls in love with Shatrughan Sinha.

Ashwinikumar (Shatrughan Sinha) delves into an enigmatic scheme to assassinate a prominent figure in New Delhi, while James (Sanjeev Kumar) embarks on a Ringanian mission within India. They engage in a confrontation, briefly reconcile, and the remainder of the movie follows their collaborative endeavours to decipher the mystery and thwart the malevolent conspiracy.

Recently, I saw a video on youtube wherein Sanjeev Kumar’s niece (I think sister’s daughter) spoke about how much the man was fond of his nieces & nephews. His love for food, specially non-vegetarian food. The family was strictly vegetarian so to circumvent that (it seems) Sanjeev Kumar had a separate kitchen in a separate flat where he could indulge in his love for food & drinks. If I recall correctly, there used to be photographs in the magazines of the 1980s with pictures of a smiling group of friends that consisted of Prem Chopra, Sujit Kumar, Sanjeev Kumar, Jeetendra, Rishi Kapoor & Rakesh Roshan (this photo keeps popping up on social media every now & then).

Another trait of the actor -Sanjeev Kumar- was his acting versatility. He acted in wide range of genres ranging from romantic drama to thriller.

Here are excerpts of what some writers have to say about the actor :-

“Sanjeev Kumar thrived in spite of defying many of Bollywood’s norms for heroes. He defied the industry’s unwritten-rules not out of necessity, but by choice. This actor did not have to sequin himself in designer duds to endear himself to the audience. He did so with his virtuoso performances.”

“Whether he made you cry in ‘Koshish’, or laugh in ‘Angoor’, put you on the edge in ‘Sholay’ or shocked you in ‘Khilona’, he could do it with ease. When a director hired Sanjeev Kumar, he hired the luxury of going to sleep. The actor would arrive at the fag end of the shift and wind up before the rest of them. Such was his easy talent. Sanjeev Kumar was a real actor.”

He was voted among the seventh “Greatest Actors of Indian cinema of All Time” in a poll conducted by Rediff.com [sometime in 2021]. His double role in ‘Angoor’ was listed among the “25 Iconic Performances of Indian cinema” by Forbes India on the occasion of celebrating 100 years of Indian Cinema. He won several major awards, including two National Film Awards for Best Actor in ‘Dastak’ (1970) and ‘Koshish’ (1972). Additionally, he was the winner of three Filmfare awards -once for best supporting actor in ‘Shikar’ (1969) and twice for best actor in ‘Aandhi’ (1976) & ‘Arjun Pandit’ (1977)

In a career of just 25 years he was seen playing a supporting character to Dilip Kumar in ‘Sunghursh’, Sunil Dutt & Joy Mukherjee in ‘Hum Hindustani’ (this was also his debut in films) etc. His 1st lead role was in 1965 in ‘Nishaan’ which was a double role. He has acted in a few films where he has played double roles but ‘Naya Din Nayi Raat’ had him play Nine roles.

His fans cannot forget his deep dimples as he smiled at his heroine; remember when he smiled at Suchitra Sen & sang ‘tum aa gaye ho noor aa gaya hai’ or ‘koi ladki mujhe kal raat sapne mein mili’ to Hema Malini. He had a different way of closing his eye when he was supposed to wink, as he did in the songs ‘tan man dhan sab hai tera bin tere kya hai mera’ & ‘thande thande paani mein nahana chahiye’

I can go on listing the traits of this actor but I choose to stop here and get on to the song with which we shall remember him today, on his fortieth anniversary. He was only 47 when he suffered a massive heart attack.
