wo chaand hai to aks bhi paani mein aayegaa
kirdaar khud ubhar ke kahaani mein aayegaa
(Iqbal Sajid)

Aks – reflection
Kirdaar – character

“jis ke paas koyi saboot nahin hota, kya wo kabhi beqasoor nahi ho sakta.”

This is the dialogue spoken by Meenakshi Sheshadri to Anil Kapoor, a lawyer, when he has refused to take her sister’s Beena’s case.  Meenakshi’s sister is a doctor and a patient dies in her private clinic, after she has administered a medicine to the patient. The medicine contains poison, and the bottle is already in the custody of the courts/police. There is no way anyone can prove that the patient did not die because of the medicine in that bottle. So all the lawyers are refusing the case and Meenakshi and the brother in law Parikshit Sahani, also a doctor, are running from pillar to post to find a lawyer who can defend Beena in the court.

The moment she says this dialogue, Anil Kapoor is transported to his childhood, when his mother Nutan had said the same words to the lawyer/ public prosecutor Amrish Puri, in defense of her husband Girish Karnad.  This whole story is in flash back – the story of Anil Kapoor, his sister and parents.

In the present, Anil Kapoor decides to defend Beena in the courts, and in true heroic style, drinks the medicine from the very bottle to prove that the patient did not die because of the medicine. Within minutes, the case is over, judgment delivered, Beena is ‘ba-izzat bari’.  Parikshit Sahani takes Anil Kapoor to the hospital immediately and treats him to save his life.  What happens to the actual culprit who put poison into the medicine bottle, I don’t know.

The court language in this type of films had glossary like ‘mulzim’ which is the one accused of a crime, ‘mujrim’ is the one whose crime is proved.  Crime is ‘jurm’ and ‘mere faazil dost’ means ‘my esteemed friend’ – this is how lawyers would refer to each other in front of a judge.

So with the case over, the doctors are grateful to Anil Kapoor and Meenakshi is in love with him. The doctors host a party to celebrate and Anil Kapoor on piano, again revives his child hood memory of the theme song at the party. This is Part-II of the song. After this party this dream sequence song, “Ae Mere Khwaabon Ke Shehzaade” comes up. This is a beach song, posted Peevicies’s mom and I have seen that song too just now. That song is one extravaganza on Madh island or Aksa beach and what is Meenakshi wearing in the last sequence? Looks as if she was trying to be a South Indian Cleopatra.

Now back to flashback:  Girish Karnad is convicted of a crime he did not commit. Nutan has tried in vain to get someone to fight her husband’s case against the formidable Amrish Puri. Their happy family is ruined, even as she manages to obtain a stay on the conviction of ‘sazaa-e-maut’, but reached late on the location. Girish Karnad has been hanged. After this I think, she loses her mind and is taken to mental Asylum.

Meanwhile the young children Anil Kapoor and the sister are left to fend for themselves in the big bad world. That is when Anil Kapoor is remembers the song that his mother and father used to sing, with his father on the piano, “Jeet Jaayenge Hum. . .”.  The song is highly motivational, though situational.  It is songs like these which make Laxmikant-Pyarelal such kings of the proverbial situational songs.  Theme song or not, the lyrics and composition is all more than apt for the mood and need of the script.  And to think that the script by Javed Akhtar originally had no scope for songs.

The events of childhood have a profound effect on the young Anil Kapoor and the song motivates him to keep fighting and to always hope and strive to win against all odds. And win he does, grows up to become a lawyer himself, struggles with the system and grows to achieve his goals step by step. All this while he is always conscious of how his mother’s struggles with the system to save his father from being punished from the crime which he has not committed. He has raised his younger sister Khushoo and who is now studying in a college. Anil Kapoor manages to trace his mother also and brings her home. But she is still not well and does not remember her children. Which is a cause for more pain, prompting Anil Kapoor to recall the childhood song again. This is when the Part-III of the song is played when Anil Kapoor and Meenakshi sing this song at home, hoping to revive Nutan’s memory and restore her mental health.

I thought, this was a movie made by GP Sippy, but turns out it was eventually made by Subhash Ghai.   Actually I found this song on YouTube a few days ago and saved the link to see it sometime. Today I got the time to see it and all the memory of the story, dialogue and songs etc. came rushing in the mind.

Jab itna kuchh likhne ke liye yaad aa gayaa to ek post to ban hi jaati hai. 🙂

The song is played multiple times throughout the film. This can’t be anyone other than Anand Bakshi’s doing, the lyrics I mean. Singers are Shabbir Kumar (in full Rafi mode) for Anil Kapoor, Nitin Mukesh for Girish Karnad and Lata Mangeshkar for Nutan, Meenakshi Sheshadri and Khushboo.

It shows that successful people have motivation for success, early in life and have to be ready for struggle. Come what may, we will not give up. Because life is always a struggle, even if one cannot foresee the difficulties to come. ‘Jung’ is not war here, but an avowal not to give up against adversities. In every way, it is struggle to succeed and defeat the bad. And this struggle starts with self to improve the self and its abilities and make them pure, truthful, honest and trustworthy. Because to do ‘jung’ with your lot is to do ‘jidd-o-jahad’ i.e. to struggle and strive.

I found a poem in the photos which I had taken in the hotel at Jaipur, during our vacation visit earlier this year.  I am searching the net for the name of the poet but even Rekhta.com is not having the works of this poet.  The title of the poem is ‘Kuchh Kehna Chaahta Hoon”.

tum kuchh lafz
musta’aar de do
main bolna chaahta hoon

mere lafzon ke haathh
ab sar par aa chuke hain
jaise haarey huye sipaahi

wo itna jhooth pee chuke hain
sach keh nahin sakte

apaahij, beemar aur za’eefon ki tarah
un ko sirf taknaa aata hai

tum kuchh lafz
musta’aar de do
main kuchh kehnaa chaahta hoon.

Musta’aar – lend, loan for a while.
Apaahij – handicap
Za’eef – aged, frail with age

Blog Day : 3737 Post No. : 14686

Hullo all in Atuldom

11th October. A day when all fans of the star of the millennium go on overdrive to wish him on his blog page, Facebook page, Twitter handle etc. He also has kept pace with these new age phenomena and is very active on these social networking sites, either himself or through his well-paid staff. I am no different, I also wish him on his twitter and blog page (in existence for the last 10 years), and wait for a day in my life when I may get a chance to see him in person- my family thinks I am crazy, never mind that 🙂 . (The closest I have come to standing with him is when I visited Madame Tussauds in London, in 2015). So is the case with our blog, I try to write a post every year for this date.

Happy Birthday to you Dear Amitabh Bachchan.

What do I write about this actor that has not been said before. He is, in absolute sense of the term, not a great actor and its about time we should admit it. But he has a quality called persistence that helped him in the initial stages of his career; when he didn’t give up even after a string of flops before ‘Zanjeer’ (1973) and ‘Deewar’ (1975) happened. He has another quality – eye for detail. I have heard from a friend of mine (she used to be an assistant to Prakash Mehra in the 80s) about how during the filming of ‘Jaadugar’ (1989) he used to check every bit of his costume and take care of continuity from one scene to another. One other quality that he has is valuing time and it has been said by many of his co-stars how they were forced to turn up for shoots on time when Amitabh was their co-actor.

In the recent episode of ‘Rangoli’ on Doordarshan I heard how his style of wrapping a handkerchief around his hand and of pushing his hand into his trouser pockets came about. It is a known fact that Amitabh Bachchan is very accident prone and on Diwali, in 1983 or 84, a sparkler or some firecracker burst in his hand and he had the burn scar for some time (this was widely reported in the newspapers back then), this was also the time when he was shooting for “Inquilaab” and “Shaarabi” and these are the movies where he puts his hand into his trousers. Another example to show that he valued time and didn’t ask for a break in the shoot to recover from the scars.

He has been ever grateful to people who stood by him in his worst times be they producers, directors, actors anyone. I suppose these are some qualities that have helped sustain his charisma all through these 50 years in Bollywood. Wow! 50 years and still active!!

No more from me about my favourite actor.

He made a great team with Manmohan Desai and gave us movies which, though not-entirely logical or believable, were extremely entertaining. If in ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’ (1977) Manmohan Desai rescued Amitabh’s mother from the clutches of Jeewan and Ranjeet with the help of a snake, in ‘Mard’ (1985) it was a tiger. In addition, the tiger guides the mother (the eternal ‘Maa’ – Nirupa Roy) towards a waiting boat, pulling her by the ‘pallu’ as if it were a pet dog on a leash. The icing on the cake is the scene when ‘Maa’ bows before the tiger, and it raises its paw to bless her. Man Desai also improved upon Amitabh’s famous ‘Deewar’ scene of remonstrating before the Lord Almighty – he made him sing a song to ‘Maa Sheronwaali’ in ‘Mard’, threatening Her with dire consequences if he cannot or does not meet his mother. And sure enough, by the time the song ends, his mother manages to reach the temple. Thank god for Manmohan Desai’s imagination and Amitabh believing in him.

It is Navaratri time and there is a lot of religious fervour happening all round. In all the states of South India, we have ‘Bomma Kolu‘- Bomma means dolls and Kolu is the artistic arrangement of these on seven tier stands which people display in their homes for nine days, have guests over for haldi-kumkum etc. Western India celebrates the festival with Mata ki Aarti followed by Garba and Dandiya. The festival is called ‘Durga Pooja‘ in Eastern India and there are sarvajanik pandals (temporary worshipping places) where idols of the Mother Goddess with her sons – Ganesh and Kartikeya and other devis – Lakshmi and Saraswati, are installed. And North India has the Navratri with Devi Pooja as well as Ram Leela, the staging of the play based on the life story of Lord Ram. All in all, an enjoyable festival culminating with Dussehra on the 10th day.  Happy Navratri to all.

The song with this post is the Mata ki Bhent (song in worship of the Mother Goddess) that Amitabh sings in ‘Mard’. Playback singer is Shabbir Kumar with Anu Malik being the music director and Indeewar the lyricist.

A few more points about the song – how did anyone allow the tangewala (Amitabh) to light the camphor in his palm? Does lighting the camphor on kumkum covered palm protect the palm from getting burnt? Please note the reaction of the temple pujari (priest) when Amitabh tries to poke himself with the trishul. Is anyone allowed to anoint an idol with blood?

Let us enjoy this masaaledaar song. 🙂

Happy Birthday Amitabh Bachchan.

Blog Day : 3709 Post No. : 14636

Today, we are celebrating an eternal birth anniversary – anniversary of the One who is the First Worshipped on all occasions.

There are many tales and variations, that tell of the origins of Lord Ganesh. The telling, as per the Shiv Puraan goes like this. A time was when Lord Shiv went into meditation for a very long period of time. On one occasion, Nandi, the chief of the Ganas of Lord Shiv was not on Mount Kailash. Goddess Parvati started preparing for her bathing rituals. Nandi was not present at the abode, and the Lord Himself was in deep meditation. Wondering and waiting as to who would guard the doorways while she took her bath, Goddess Parvati fashioned a form of a boy child from the turmeric paste that she had applied on to herself. As the form took shape, she then breathed life force into him. A child, as yet un-named, was brought to life. Goddess Parvati instructed him that he is Her son, and that he would obey only her commands. She further instructed him to guard the doorways of the abode, while she was taking her bath. The newborn young child took the instructions to heart and stood vigilant at the doorways.

While Goddess Parvati was still taking her bath, Lord Shiv completed his meditation and arose. He came towards the abode, only to find a fine young child guarding the doorways. Now, the child was not familiar with who this fatherly figure was, as he had not yet been so instructed by Goddess Parvati. In the absence of that knowledge, for him, the prime duty was the last instructions he had received, to guard the doorway and not allow anyone to enter. He pleaded politely with the Lord, to wait. But of course, the Lord was only returning to his own abode an could not understand why he was being prohibited to enter his own abode. The exchange between the Lord and the child took toll of the patience of the Lord, and in a fit of piqued annoyance, threw his trishul (trident) at the child in a manner that the child was beheaded.

He entered his abode. Goddess Parvati had completed her ablutions by then and was ready. When she saw her Lord in the abode, she was happy, and made preparations to offer him something to eat. She served the items in two platters. The Lord asked her, for whom was the second platter. Then Goddess narrated the tale of how she had created a boy child from the turmeric paste from her own body, and left him to guard the doorways while she took bath. And she enquired that the Lord must have met the child as he enter the abode. The Lord now realized what had happened, and then narrated the events as they had transpired outside the doorway.

On hearing the episode of the demise of her just newborn or newly created child, Goddess was overcome with grief. Since she also is the Mother of all creation, her going to this state of grief coupled with fury, of course did not bode well for the creation. All the ferocious manifestations of the Mother Goddess started to appear, threatening destruction of everything. There was an outcry of panic and alarm amongst all living creatures in the universe. The lesser Gods went to Lord Brahma and prayed for his protection.

Lord Brahma came to Mount Kailash and pleaded with the Mother Goddess and Lord Shiv to somehow placate the extreme situation, and avoid the destruction of the universe. Goddess Parvati agreed, on the condition that the child that had been beheaded be brought back to life. In the exchange that occurred between the child and Lord Shiv, the impact of the trishul was such that the head of the child could not be seen anywhere. Lord Shiv then instructed all his adherent disciples to go and search for a head for this child. The instruction was to bring back the head of the first dead entity they encountered, who would be lying prone with its head towards the north. In this search, the first such being encountered was an elephant. And so, its head was brought back to the abode. Lord Shiva placed this head of the elephant on the headless body of the boy child, and breathed life force once again into him. The child was revived and the imminent destruction of the universe was avoided.

The child was named Ganesh, combining two words – gan + eesh. Gan is the word for the closest adherent disciples of Lord Shiv, and eesh is the word that indicates primary or the first lead – meaning the first and the most preferred and honoured amongst all the adherent disciples of the Lord. He is also known by the name Gajaanan – one with the face like an elephant (gaj – elephant; aanan – face). In reality, he is known by numerous names, all depicting certain special characteristics of his persona.

There are other events that followed, by which Ganesh also got the boon and blessing that he would be the first one to be worshipped in any auspicious activity of the humans and of the demigods.

For today’s celebration, we present her a song from the 1979 film ‘Marte Dam Tak’. The song is created by Ravindra Jain who is both the writer and the composer for this song. The singing voices are those of Shabbir Kumar, Suresh Wadkar, Hemlata and Mahendra Kapoor. On screen, the song is performed by Govinda, Shakti Kapoor, Farah Naaz and Rajkumar, while we also see Om Puri in the picturization. The lyrics of this song have been sent in by our dear Prakashchandra ji.

Once again, with plentiful greetings to all friends and readers on this occasion – may all the happinesses come your way, and all the obstacles in your paths be removed by the blessings of Lord Ganesh – the first amongst all the followers of Lord Shiv.

Ganpati Baapa Moryaa. . .

hho o o hho o hho o

vakra tund mahakaaye hai tujh mein
koti soorya ki jyoti

shubh kaamon ke liye
pratham teri hi pooja hoti

pehle pooja kar lein phir hum doojaa kaam karenge ae

lekar tera naam prabhu hum kaam tamaam karenge

poojaa mein koyee bair nahin
par chhedaa to khaair nahin

tere bhakt janon ka muqabila
haan aan aan
mauka milaa mauka milaa

burrrrrrrrrr aaahhaaaaa

shankar suvan bhawani ke nandan
bhakton ke rakhwaaley
bhakton ke rakhwaaley
tera haath ho jiss ke sar pe
koyi usey kya maarey

arrey jaan booj kar jo agyaani
maut ke moonh mein jaaye ae
maut ke moonh mein jaaye
arrey kaissey usey bachaaye bhagwan
kab tak ussey bachaaye

kiss mein kitni bhakti hai
kiss mein kitni shakti hai
ae ae kaun ye baazi maarega
kaun khel mein haarega haarega
(hhaa hhaa)
muqabila muqabila
tere bhakt janon ka muqabila
haaan…..aaaaan
mauka milaa mauka milaa
badi mushkil se ye mauka mila

jis raana ke naam ko sun kar
sajda karey zamana
dushman ke ae ghar aa pahuncha wo o o
ganpati kaa deewaana

dost se ho yaa dushman se
hum waada kabhi na bhoole
wo hathiyaar bana hi nahin jo o o
badan hamaara chhoo le

zarrey ki himmat to dekho
parvat se takraaye
parvat se takraaye
apni hasti bhool ke katraa
dariya se hodh lagaaye
dariya se hodh lagaaye
tujh par jinhein  bharosa
nahin kisi se darte
nahin kisi se darte
marte dum tak bhakt tere
tera hi dum bharte
tera hi dum bharte
kitna dum kiss jaani mein
kaun hai kitne paani mein
hum ye baazi maarenge
haarne waaley haarenge haarenge
muqabila muqabila
tere bhakt janon ka muqabila
haan…aaan

Hullo Atuldom

“Asli Naqli” that was released in 1986 was directed by Sudarshan Nag. It had a star cast of Shatrughan Sinha- Anita Raaj- Raadhika- Rajnikanth- Amrish Puri- Shakti Kapoor -Ashok Kumar. It had a normal storyline wherein as boy is separated from his wealthy parents in childhood. His parents have only one clue of him- a locket that he is wearing. Upon his father’s death the mother embarks on a mission to trace out her long-lost son with the help of (typically named) Durjan Singh (Amrish Puri). Durjan Singh and his son Shakti Singh (Shakti Kapoor) plant Birju ustaad (Rajnikanth) as the son with the sole motive of plundering the wealthy widow. Then Shatrughan Sinha steps-in and the plot spices up. Further the ladies are there for the song and dance routines. Essentially what this movie had was two superstars with stylised acting and the public had a paisa-vasool feeling. It had a decent run at the box-office.

Today (12 december 2017) this movie makes it debut on the blog on the occasion of Rajnikanth’s birthday. Rajnikanth- on whom various jokes are directed day in and day out. One example: the recent cyclone was because he sneezed. Rajnikanth- whose rise to superstardom is fairy-tale-like. Rajnikanth – the humble giant of the South Indian film industry -he works largely in Tamil, Telugu and Kannada movies but his movies are usually dubbed into other languages too. He has acted in about 20-25 Hindi movies too with Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan, Shatrughan Sinha, Rekha, Shabana Azmi, Zeenat Aman etc as his co-actors. He has the next generation of heroines- Aishwarya Rai, Sonakshi etc- too ready to do miniscule roles just for the pleasure of being in a Rajni film.

The songs of the movie were written by S.H. Bihari- Shamsul Huda Bihari. He was the writer of such classics as “bahut shukriya badi meherbani”; “hai duniya usiki zamaana usika”; “raaton ko chori chori”; “meri jaan tum sadke ehsaan itna kardo” and lots more.
The music director for “Asli Naqli” was Laxmikant- Pyarelal. Today’s song has the voices of Shabbir Kumar and Anuradha Paudwal with (surprise! Surprise!) Laxmikant Kudalkar meaning Laxmikant the music director himself. It is a party song where both the heroes are trying to prove the other as the imposter with Anita Raaj trying to drill sense into them. Seema Deo, Amrish Puri and Shakti Kapoor don’t seem amused by the proceedings.

With this song we also wish the other superstar whose birthday was on the 9th – Shatrughan Sinha. (sorry to have missed it.)
Happy Birthday Thalaiva a.k.a Rajnikanth.

Lyrics

duniya bhar ko dhokha dekar
koi nahin bach paayega
duniya bhar ko dhokha dekar
koi nahi bach paayega
kaun hai asli

ye toh waqt bataayega
arre koi kitne chehre badle
pehchaana to jayega

taraasho chaahe jitni baar
ek patthar ke tukde ko o o o
chamak heere ki
chamak heere ki
us tukde mein hargiz aa nahin sakti
sabhi ganga me dubki maarke
paawan nahin bante ae ae ae
siyahi koyle ki
siyahi koyle ki
laakh dho lo jaa nahin sakti
jo jaisa hai ik din
sabko apna rang dikhaayega
jo jaisa hai ik din
sabko apna rang dikhayega
kaun hai asli
kaun hai nakli
kaun hai asli re asli
kaun hai naqli
ye toh
o ye toh
o ye toh waqt batayega

duniya bhar ko dhokha dekar
koi nahin bach payega
duniya bhar ko dhokha dekar

nazar waale to bas pahli najar mein aen aen
aadmi ko bhaanp lete hain ae ae ae ae
nigaahein kya milin
nigaahein kya milin
ke tol lete naap lete hain

koi kitna bhi badle khud ko
uska chhal nahin jaata aa aa aa
ke rassi jal toh
ke rassi jal toh jaati hai
par uska bal nahin jaata
kauva hans hi chaal chale toh
hans nahi kehlayega
kauva hans hi chaal chale toh
hans nahin kehlaayega
kaun hai asli
kaun hai naqli
haan kaun hai asli
kaun hai naqli
ye toh
ho ye toh
ye to waqt bataayega
duniya bhar ko dhokha dekar
koi nahin bach payega
duniya bhar ko dhokha dekar

zamaane bhar ke aage
apna apna raaz mat kholo
akalmandi isi mein hai
na ye bole na tum bolo
na ye bole na tum bolo
chupchaap raho
khaamosh raho
chupchaap raho
khamosh raho
apnon ko kabhi ilzaam na do
aapas ke in jhagdon se
gharbaar bigadta jaayega
aapas ke in jhagdon se
gharbaar bigadta jaayega
kaun hai asli
kaun hai nakli
kaun hai asli
kaun hai nakli
ye toh

haan ye to
o ye toh waqt bataayega
duniya bhar ko dhokha dekar
koi nahi bach payega
duniya bhar ko dhokha dekar
koi nahi bach paayega

kaun hai asli
ae kaun hai naqli
ae kaun hai asli
ae kaun hai naqli
ye toh
o ye toh
o ye to waqt bataayega
duniya bhar ko dhokha dekar
koi nahin bach payega
duniya bhar ko dhokha dekar

I don’t know what was the promise Atul had made to himself when he started this blog. I don’t know what were his criteria for selecting songs for posting. But I know a whole lot of us liked his blog, got into the habit of logging in to see what he had posted. The next stage in the journey was to send him requests and I am sure he must have felt like vividh bharati and there was a backlog of requests (farmaishes). So what happened next was regulars turned contributors—either sending lyrics or write ups. Ab alam yeh hain ki there are a few days when there was one post from Atul and the rest from contributions. Of course Atul still has to write a suitable post when we send him only the lyrics or link for a particular song.

Gulzar, a name that will bring to mind poems and songs of unsullied beauty and edifying simplicity. A play on words that sound commonplace, and yet the meaning and the message they carry are so profound and endearing, that can make emotions swell in the heart. Be it the perky “Mora Gora Ang Layi Le” from film ‘Bandini’ (1963), or the poingnant “Koi Hota Jisko Apna Hum Apna Keh Letey Yaaro” from ‘Mere Apne’ (1971), or the spirited “Huzoor Is Qadar Bhi Na Itthlaa Ke Chaliye” from ‘Maasoom’ (1983), or even the belligerent “Chhod Aaye Hum Wo Galiyaan” from ‘Maachis’ (1996). The spectrum of sentiments is captured fully, across the emotions as well as across the decades, something that speaks volumes of the talent of this wonderful poet. Sometimes his creations are tricky and keen – take this song from Aandhi (1975) “Is Mod Se Jaate Hain”
