‘Chaahat’ (1971) was produced by G M Roshan and was directed by Moni Bhattacharjee. The cast included Mala Sinha, Biswajeet, Jeetendra, Mumtaz, Achala Sachdev, Asit Sen, Sundar, Mridula, Madhumati, Rupesh Kumar, Jhilani, Jayshree T etc. This was the only black and white film in the entire career of Jeetendra and by this, I presume that this film may have taken long time to complete.

It is a surprise as to why Jeetendra signed this black and white film when he started his career as a lead actor in a colour film, ‘Geet Gaaya Pathharon Ne’ (1964). I had recently read two interviews – one by Jeetendra and another by Mumtaz which give me an indication that Jeetendra may have signed the film, ‘Chaahat’ (1971) before the release of his debutant film, ‘Geet Gaaya Pathharon Ne’ (1964).

In the interview, Jeetendra had revealed that the producer Devi Sharma wanted to sign him with Kumkum for a black and white film. But he was reluctant to sign after doing his first colour film. At the same time, being a newcomer, he did not want to lose the opportunity. He made an offer to Devi Sharma that he will convince Rajshree to act in his film and get Shankar-Jaikishan as the music director to motivate him make the film in colour. He agreed provided it fitted in his budget. Jeetendra decided to forgo his remuneration to fit into his budget. The film was ‘Gunaahon Ka Devta’ (1967).

Mumtaz, in another interview, has mentioned that Jeetendra was unhappy about she getting a role opposite him in ‘Boond Jo Ban Gayee Motee’ (1967). The reason was that at that time, she was working in ‘B’/’C’ grade films. However, V Shantaram told him to leave the film if is not comfortable in working with Mumtaz. In ‘Chaahat’ (1971), he was in the second lead opposite Mumtaz.

‘Chaahat’ (1971) was the last film for Moni Bhattacharjee as a director. He had started his Hindi film career as an Assistant Director to Bimal Roy who promoted him to direct ‘Usne Kaha Thhaa’ (1960) produced by Bimal Roy Productions. Thereafter, he directed ‘Mujhe Jeene Do’ (1963), ‘Jaal’ (1967), and Baazi’ (1968).

The story of the film is as under:

Shobha (Achala Sachdev) stays with her husband (Jhilani), stepson, Ashok (Master Javed) and her own son, Arun (Master Shahid). Shobha’s husband is addicted to alcohol and every day, he returns home in the night fully drunk. So, there is always some commotion in the house when he is drunk. Despite being a stepmother, Shobha loves Ashok more than her own son, Arun. Both the sons have cordial relations with each other. Geeta (Baby Yasmeen) who stays in their neighbourhood is a frequent visitor to play with Ashok and Arun. Shobha’s brother (Asit Sen) who resents Shobha’s overindulgence on Ashok and tries to create a rift between them without success.

One night, as usual, Shobha’s husband returns home completely drunk and starts assaulting her. Ashok comes out of his room and protests for hitting his stepmother. He tries to stand between them to prevent him from assaulting her The father gets infuriated and in trying to push Ashok away from him, he loses balance and roles down from the stairs. The fall becomes fatal and he dies. This sudden sad event give shock to both Ashok and his mother. Shobha reports to the police that her husband had died from an accidental fall in a state of drunkenness. But Ashok carries the complex that because of him, his father has died.

Years pass and both Ashok (Biswajit) and Arun (Jeetendra) have grown up as also Geeta (Mala Sinha). They still maintain their friendship. Geeta loves Ashok and he is aware of it. But both of them have not realised that Arun loves Geeta and he takes her affection and kindness towards him as a sign of her love for him without knowing that she loves Ashok. To add to the complications, Geeta’s younger sister, Sheela (Mumtaz) has started liking Arun when he picked up her from the airport under instructions from Geeta. Ashok, Arun, Geeta and Sheela goes for a holiday to a hill station during which Arun’s cousin, Raju (Roopesh Kumar) joins them with an intention to strengthen the closeness of Arun to Geeta for their eventual union. During this process, Raju falls in love with Sheela who cares two hoots for him. Like his father (Asit Sen), Raju also tries to create a rift between the brothers but fails.

During the Deewaali festival, a cracker explodes on Arun’s face while being lighted by Ashok. Arun is hospitalised where he is diagnosed having lost his eyesight. Once again, Ashok feels that he is responsible for Arun’s fate in a same way when he felt when his father died. Ashok decides to devote more time to take care of his blind brother and keep him cheerful. A music master is employed to teach him playing musical instruments. He takes Arun to all the functions to keep his mind occupied. During this period, Ashok comes to know through Sheela that Arun loves Geeta. Ashok meets Arun and he gets the confirmation when Arun requests him to discuss his marriage with Geeta with her parents.

Ashok is now in a piquant situation. But his guilty feelings towards Arun decide to sacrifice his love. First, he seeks consent from Geeta’s parents who have no objection for her marriage with Arun if Geeta is agreeable. Next, Ashok meets Geeta who is firm that she will not marry Arun as she has always treated him like her brother. Ashok is annoyed with her and prohibits her from visiting his house and tells her that as far as she is concerned, he is dead for her. Back to Arun, Ashok makes a story that Geeta is seriously ill. So, he could not discuss his marriage proposal with her parents. After few days, Ashok announces Geeta’s death to gain some more time to plan the future course of actions. To keep away Arun from Geeta, Ashok frequently goes for parties and other social functions with Arun all over India.

In the meanwhile, Geeta is confused as to why Ashok and Arun are away from their house. She reveals to her mother what Ashok had said about Arun. She strongly suggests Geeta to meet Arun and tell him the truth so that things are not further complicated. Geeta meets Arun and is surprised that Ashok had lied to him that Geeta is dead. In the absence of any reason as to why he lied to him, Arun suspects that Ashok deliberately made him blind. He even suspects that he killed his father. In disgust, Arun leaves the house without informing anyone. On the road, he gets dashed by a car in which Sheela and Geeta are traveling. They recognise Arun and gets him hospitalised. Shobha dashes to the hospital to be with Arun.

Ashok, Geeta and Sheela also reach the hospital. Arun requests Ashok to find out an eye donor so that his eyesight is restored because he wants to see the marriage of Ashok with Geeta. Ashok is surprised but Shobha tells him that she has apprised Arun of everything because of which Arun has a change of mind. He offers to marry Sheela if she is agreeable for which Sheela nodes her head. Ashok and Geeta gets married

The film had five songs written by Anand Bakshi which were set to music by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Two songs have been covered on the Blog. I present the 3rd song, ‘mere dil kee sun le kahaani o dilbar jaani’ rendered by Mohammed Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar. The start of the song is picturised on Jayshree T and a male dancer. As the song progresses, it gets picturised on Jeetendra and Mumtaz.

The context of the song is that Biswajeet, Mala Sinha, Jeetendra and Mumtaz are holidaying in a hill station along with Roopesh Kumar. One day they visit a nearby tribal fair where there is tribal dance performance in progress. When Jeetendra, Mumtaz and Roopesh Kumar reach there to watch the tribal dance, one person from the dance troop forces Jeetendra and Mumtaz to change into tribal dress and dance with them and they oblige him.

The video clip of the song has an additional stanza while the audio clip has the record version. I find sound quality of audio clip better than the video clip.
