This is a role reversal to “Abhi na jaao chhod ke, ke dil abhi bhara Nahin”. Here Hema Malini is trying to stop Dharmendra from going to his job. She is calling him ‘Raja” and asking him not to leave her alone, take leave from work, or better to leave the job if he is not getting holiday. The filmy or flimsy situation, Lata Mangeshkar’s playback, Hema Malini looking resplendent in a red jacket/suit, begging. Dharmendra on his part is just trying to get away on whatever transport he can find and enjoying all the attention. All that bhav is good for the hero anyway. Songs like “haay haay yeh majboori”, “Na ja mere hamdam”, “bataa doon kya laana” and others convey the similar emotion in different ways.

This song composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal and written by Anand Bakshi is filmed on location in Malta. Actually, I have a special liking for this “Ke aaja teri yaad aayi” (Charas) song, which is not surprising as it is a Lata-Rafi duet. There is a common link between these songs, as it seems as if, “Raja na ja” continues to “Ke aaja teri yaad aayi”. Simply because both Dharmendra and Hema Malini are in the same attire of the big checks suit and red suit, in first part of Duet song. The Duet song is filmed in different locations, which are not all in Malta. Malta is a small Island nation in the meditterean sea, falling between Tunisia and Italy, and its closest neighbour is Cicily. I am thinking, why did they not go to Cicily and be done with it 😊to shoot, instead of the desert island of Malta. It looks like a desert to me in the song. There is hardly any greenery around, though the coastline, harbour, beaches, Marina, and industrial areas can be seen in the song. From what I see in the map too topographically, it could be the Sahara deserts broken away part.

So, in the second part of “Ke aaja teri yaad aayi”, they did decide to go the whole hog to Venice, and where else? The Lake area could be Italy, but the gondola part looks familiar. The film is more than 50 years ago, and there are still some places in our digital and AI empowered world, where time has stood still. Here also they are travelling in Gondola and the boat in Venice. But “in Raja na ja” they are travelling in car, tonga and boat too. I was expecting to see a little train travel too but was not to happen.

I should see the movie, to see the songs and locations.

So here is the Lata solo, only the 3rd song of the film to appear here, 3 more to go.

Song-Raaja na jaa dil tod ke (Charas)(1976) Singer-Lata Mangeshkar, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal

Lyrics:

Oo
Ho ho ho
Ooo oooo oooooooo
Oo
Ho ho ho
Ooho oooo
Raja na ja
Na ja na ja
Raja na ja
Dil tod ke
Mujhe akelaa chhod ke
Naukree se chhuttee le le
Chhuttee na miley to oo
Aajaa
Naukree chhod ke
Naukree chhod ke
Naukree chhod ke ea ea
Naukree chhod ke
Raja na ja
Dil tod ke
Mujhe akelaa chhod ke
Naukree se chhutti le le
Chhuttee na mile to oo oo
Aajaa
Naukree chhod ke ea ea
Naukree chhod ke
Naukree chhod ke ea
Naukree chhod ke

Ho raama
Ho raamaa
Ho raamaa ho

Tum ko meree bechainee ka
Kaaran naheen banana thha
Naukar naheen banana thha
Ya phir saajan Naheen banna thha
Naukar naheen banana thha aa
Ya phir saajan Naheen banna thha
barkha mein jo pyaasa rakkhe woh
Saawan Naheen banana thha
Ya to mera dil rakhh le
Dil na rakhh sake to oo oo
Rakkh de yeh dil tod ke
Na jaa akelaa chhod ke

Aisee rasmeyat to janaab
Koyee hotaa hai
Paise ke liye
Preetam badnaam koyee hotaa hai
Paise ke liye Preetam
badnaam koyi hotaa hai
Pyaar se zurooree bhalaa kaam koyi hotaa hai
Maan le tu harjaayee
Yeh na maaney to o o o o
Dekh idhar munh mod ke
Na ja akela chhod ke
Raja na jaa

Teree judaayee mein meree jaan nikal jaayegee
Dil kee lagee ban ke
chhuree dil pe chal jaayegee
Dil kee lagee ban ke
chhuree dil pe chal jaayegee
Sainyyaan binaa
ghoonghat mein yeh goree jal jaayegee
Ya tu gale se lagaa le
Ya chunar laa de ae
Rouun mein chunar odh ke
Na ja akela chhod ke
Raja na jaa
Na ja na ja
Raja na ja
Dil tod ke
Mujhe akelaa chhod ke
Naukree se chhuttee le le
Chhuttee na miley to oo
Aajaa
Naukree chhod ke
Naukree chhod ke
Naukree chhod ke ae ae
Naukree chhod ke
