‘Pasand Apni Apni’ (1983) was produced and directed by Basu Chatterjee. The cast included Mithun Chakraborty, Rati Agnihotri, Utpal Dutt, Subbiraj, Kumud Tripathi, Javed Khan, Madhumeeta, Manik Dutt, Manik Chaudhary, Ranjana Sachdev, Subrato Mahapatra, Khokha Mukherji, Roopdarshini, Sova Sen etc with guest appearances by Ashok Kumar, Jayshree T., Ashalata, Dinesh Hingoo, Shibani Bhattacharya and Neelam Mehra. Anjoli and Atul Agnihotri made their debut in the film. The film belongs to ‘rom com’ (romance and comedy) genre.

The debutant actress, Anjoli (Anjali Sen/Vyas) is a well-known for her role of Urmila in Ramanand Sagar’s TV Serial ‘Ramayan’ (1987-88). She was born in Kolkata and grew up in Chennai. She had started working in South’s films when Basu Chatterjee spotted her and offered her roles in his two films which were to go on the floor for shooting at that time – the film under discussion and the second, ‘Laakhon Kee Baat’ (1984). She has worked in about half a dozen Hindi films before she got the TV serial, ‘Ramayan’. After the end of her TV serial shootings, she migrated to Australia where she lives with her family.

‘Pasand Apni Apni’ (1983) was an adaptation of a British comedy film, ‘Happy Go Lovely’ (1951). ‘Saajan’ (1969) was also partly based on this British film. A somewhat similar situation was used in ‘Yahaan Wahaan’ (1984) and much later in ‘Ghajini’ (2008). The gist of the film’s story is as under:

Geeta (Rati Agnihotri) is a middle class girl who stay with her mother. She has to report daily for her drama rehearsal and she always struggles to reach on time because of which she get reprimanded by drama company owner, Sriram (Utpal Dutt). One day, because of her delay, she takes lift in a car to be in time for the rehearsal. The car belongs to a rich businessman Sandeep Anand (Mithun Chakraborty) of Anand Enterprises.

After getting to know that Geeta has travelled in Sandeep Anand’s car, Sriram sees it an opportunity to get funding for his drama company under the impression that Geeta knows him. She maintains that stance to avoid getting reprimended from him. Geeta gets promoted as the heroine in his forthcoming drama under the assumption that with Geeta’s help, Sandeep Anand will become the patron of his drama company.

When Sandeep Anand starts receiving bills for drama costumes which Sriram has been ordering for the actors of the play, he decides to probe the matter, posing as a Clerk of his office as to why the bill is charged to his company by Ismail (Subiraj) who is the tailor supplying costumes to Sriram. After getting details from him, Sandeep, the clerk attends a press conference in which Sriram, while introducing his new heroine, Geeta announces Sandeep Anand as their patron of the drama company. Geeta is afraid that things are going out of her hands. After the press conference, Sandeep, the clerk meets Geeta. Now, she is really afraid that cat is going to be out of the bag. She requests him not to disclose about the bills to Sandeep Anand. Sandeep, the clerk has started liking Geeta and agrees to her request.

Geeta and Sandeep often meet. Sandeep likes her for simplicity and honesty and Geeta likes him for his down to earth nature. Eventually, both fall in love though Sandeep has not yet revealed his real identity. One day, Sriram asks Geeta to arrange a meeting with Sandeep Anand for him and for his suppliers to meet him personally as Ismail’s bill has not yet been settled By Sandeep Anand. She is about to be exposed as in reality, she does not know Sandeep Anand.

In the meanwhile, Sandeep Anand’s uncle (Ashok Kumar) who is a mentor to him, becomes aware of his nephew spending time with Geeta. He brings a proposal of his marriage with Rajni (Madhumita), daughter of a businessman which would become beneficial for his business. Sandeep Anand says that currently he is not in a hurry to get married and also he is not in favour of mixing marriage with business.

Geeta poses her intricate problem to Sandeep, the clerk. He assures her that since Sriram has not seen Sandeep Anand, he would disguise himself as Sandeep Anand with his mannerism and in a restaurant of five-star hotel. In the absence of any other way out, Geeta agrees. Sriram and his suppliers come to the restaurant and wait for Geeta and Sandeep to reach. This time, Sandeep, instead of his usual middle class attire, has come in three piece suit. After meeting Sriram, Sandeep agrees to become the patron and issues a cheque of Rs.one lakh to Sriram to finance his drama company. He is extremely happy and so are his suppliers as they will now get their dues from him.

Geeta is very uncomfortable as she thinks that the cheque will bounce and she will be exposed. So, she meets Sriram and reveals him the truth and fears that his cheque of Rs. One lakh will bounce. He is dumbstruck and so are his suppliers. They all go to the police station and lodge a FIR against Sandeep for misrepresenting them. Police arrests Sandeep and puts him behind the bar. A senior police officer recognises him as Sandeep Anand and he gets him released. In the meantime, Sriram gets the news that his cheque has been cleared. All are a happy lot. Sandeep Anand proposes to Geeta for the marriage in front of her drama audience and Geeta accepts.

The film had six songs written by Anjaan (3) and Yogesh (3) which were set to music by Bappi Lahiri. Two songs have been covered on the Blog. I present, the 3rd song, ‘kiske pyaar mein khoye huye ho’ rendered by Asha Bhosle who sings for Anjali Sen, Madhumeeta and lastly Rati Agnihotri. The song is written by Yogesh.

The context of the song is that Sandeep Anand (Mithun Chakraborty) has fallen in love with Geeta (Rati Agnihotri) and he is daydreaming about her in his bedroom. Two of girls, Rajni (Madhumita) and Anita (Anjali Sen) who have romantic inclination towards him for long appear in his room in his imagination asking him as to who is that girl with whom he has fallen in love.

The highlight of this lovely, soft and foot tapping song is the use of bass guitar which is prominently played in the background providing rhythm to the song.
