Hullo Atuldom

Back to writing a post after a full month, last one was on 6th November to pay tribute to Sanjeev Kumar. In this period I have been getting gentle nudges by our Guruji, enquiring about the lull in my writing. He even suggested that I strike a deal with Sadanandji, about pacing our landmark posts (at that point Sadanandji was four short of his century). I assured Arunkumarji that by the time I get back to writing Sadanandji would have hit his century and gone far ahead; he is sitting on 1014 currently.

I have been a little pre-occupied attending a few weddings, accompanied with learning to shake a leg for the dances to execute at the pre-wedding sangeet and other wedding related celebrations. A few of my nephews got married in this wedding season.

As I was in the middle of enjoying myself, I was jolted by reality – the ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham’ aspect of life. Two of the people who were an integral part of my life, apart from the Parents of course, my Chacha & Maasi bid adieu to this mortal world. Not one after the other, but almost together, on the same date, in a gap of an hour. That really was a shocker. But life is like that is what all gyaanis/ knowledgeable people will say & we need to move on, be strong etc.. But two on the same date is very hard to digest.

But I am back and hope to pickup pace.

There were a few songs playing in my mind over the last month, whenever it was a celebrity anniversary. Songs like ‘sare bazaar karenge pyar’ from ‘Qaatilon Ke qaatil’ (1981); ‘ladki pasand ki mushkil se milti hai’ from ‘Raam Balraam’ (1980) etc. All these were songs featuring Zeenat Aman with Dharmendra as her hero.

There were other songs & possible posts too, but past is gone, hoping to be active henceforth.

The Indian film industry has been loosing stalwarts over the last few months- we lost actor/ comedians Satish Shah & Asrani, dancing actors Sandhya Shantaram & Madhumati, character actor Pankaj Dheer, adman Piyush Pandey who also acted in a few films, and the singer (lesser known to us who form the older generation) Zubeen Garg. Then the start of November gave us the news that Dharmendra was extremely unwell, admitted to a hospital & on ventilator. There was a sigh of relief among followers of Hindi film when Dharmendra was discharged from hospital. This was short lived as we lost the favourite actor of millions on 24th November.

Our Nahmji has written this very heartfelt tribute to the simple at heart actor who had a long run at in the films beginning in the early 1960s, having come to Bombay to become an actor after seeing films starring the legend Dilip Kumar.

Dharmendra (or Dharam Paaji as he was affectionately addressed) began his career in 1960 with ‘Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere” which was a film directed by Arjun Hingorani. He went to act in all the films that Arjun Hingorani produced or directed (8 in all). Another trivia is Arjun Hingorani always appeared in his films in atleast one scene & all his movies had titles with three ‘Ks’ in them:-

Movie Name (Year) Reamrks
‘Kab? Kyoon? Aur Kahan?’ (1970) with Babita as heroine
Kahani Kismat Ki (1973) with Rekha as heroine
Khel Khilari Ka (1977) Shabana Azmi as heroine but not Dharmendra’s jodi
Katilon Ke Kaatil (1981) with Zeenat Aman as heroine
Karishma Kudrat Kaa (1985) with Anita Raj
Sultnat (1986); keeping with the ‘K’ fixation it was also called ‘Kaarname Kamaal Ke’ Neeta Mehta played 1st wife to Dharmendra’s character & Madeleine Cahill played 2nd wife
Kaun Kare Kurbanie (1991) not sure if there was any heroine for Dharmendra
Kaise Kahoon Ke… Pyaar Hai (2003) Farida Jalal played Dharmendra’s wife

8th December 2025 would have been Dharmendra’s 90th birthday- Navati Varsha/Navati Janmadivasam as it is called in Sanskrit. I am sure his family would have been prepared a lot in terms of celebration. Fan clubs too would have been in hyper-celebratory modes. IFFI (International Film Festival of India, Goa) had lined up ‘Sholay’ for special screening to mark 50 years of the film. Unfortunately, this turned out to be a tribute as Dharam Paaji passed away just two days before the scheduled screening; which was on 26th or 27th of November.

I am presenting a song, which was on my Wishlist for last month. It is from “Katilon Ke Kaatil” (1981) which was produced & directed by Arjun Hingorani. It had music by Kalyanji- Anandji who were a composers for many of Hingorani’s films. Rajinder Krishan was the lyricist. Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Mohd Rafi, Hemlata, Mahendra Kapoor, Anwar & Aziz Nazan were the playback singers used for the seven songs one of which had a male/female version & another ran through the film.

Stating that the base theme for the film was ‘Lost & Found’ with an angle of revenge thrown in for good measure will give seasoned Hindi Film followers a rough idea of what to expect in the film. It had Dharmendra & Rishi Kapoor playing brothers separated in childhood & Zeenat Aman & Tina Munim playing their heroines respectively. Nirupa Roy was the mother pining for her sons & Pradeep Kumar played the father who is killed at the start by badman Amjad Khan. Then there were Shakti Kapoor, Arjun Hingorani, Shivraj, Manorama etc playing supporting characters.

The film is best known for its hit music and several exploitation film gimmicks. Capitalizing on Bruce Lee’s popularity in India, the film exploited the Bruceploitation trend from Hong Kong action cinema, with the appearance of Bruce Lee lookalike ‘Bruce Le’ in the film. It also featured a special character called ‘Reecha’, who was born of a woman and a wild bear, and resembles ‘General Ursus’ from ‘Planet of the Apes’.

The song in this post features Zeenat Aman with Dharmendra singing in the voices of Asha Bhosle & Kishore Kumar. My favourite part of the song is when in the second stanza Dharmendra & Zeenat Aman have a gender change & also sing in female voice for Garam Dharam & male for Zeenat.

Wish you were in this mortal world Dharam Paaji to take our Birthday wishes- from your fans.

Sorry to read of your loss. These family elders are a value addition, and we do miss them once they are gone.

About the post and song, it is a known song, but forgotten one. We have seen the songs on chhaya geet. Very similar to the “professor pyarelal” songs.

Good to see you return.

Thanks and regards.
