In this article, I am presenting a song, ‘suno aye duniyawaalon ek naya paighaam laaya hoon’ from an incomplete film, ‘Naya Mandir’ (1961). It was directed by Kishore Sahu. It had Manoj Kumar, Mala Sinha and Mehmood in main roles. I came to know of this song on the audio album of ‘Film Hi Film’ (1983). Unfortunately, this song seems to have been deleted from the VCD of the film available on one of the video sharing platforms. Since video clip of the song is available in continuation of the scene from ‘Film Hi Film. (1983), it can be construed that the song was included in the film.

Shahab Ahmed, the producer of ‘Film Hi Film’ (1983) had earlier produced ‘Cinema Cinema’ (1979). During his visit to Bombay Film Laboratory, he was astonished to see cans of more than 2000 unfinished films lying in the laboratory. Shahab Ahmed thought that a lot of efforts had gone into making these films which unfortunately remained incomplete for various reasons. So, he came with the idea of incorporating scenes and songs from a few select incomplete films to make a full-length feature film [Source: ‘…and Pran’ (2005) by Bunny Rueben].

The scenes and songs of some of the incomplete films became the basis of the film’s story. The entire film centres around the character of Pran as a veteran producer who was once at the top ladder of the Hindi film industry as a filmmaker. (His role is probably inspired from Chandulal Shah, the boss of Ranjit Movietone). As years passes and new filmmakers comes on the scene, Pran somehow loses the grip and incurs heavy losses in film productions. He sells his all assets including the Bungalow to meet the creditors’ demand and moves to an ordinary house. He even spends a term in the jail for his cheques issued to the creditors getting bounced.

After release from the prison, a documentary film maker visits his place for an interview during which he shares his experiences with making films and also about others films. During this part of the interview, some of the scenes and songs are shown as flashbacks. The documentary filmmaker pays him Rs,50000/- as the fee for his interview. This gives Pran some hope for making a new film. With the help of his loyal artists and technicians who offer to work free for him and his wife offering to sell her jewelery, Pran starts rehearsals for shooting with his actors during which he shows to them a few of the clippings of the scenes of unfinished films to learn how the dialogues with different types of emotions are delivered. After he completes the film, no distributor is prepared to distribute the film. At last, his former film production partner takes the responsibility of film distribution. The film is released and gets a good response from the audience.

Of the 11 songs in the film, as many as nine songs have come from the unfinished films – two songs each from ‘Picnic’ (1964) and ‘Saajan Kee Galiyaan’ (1968), one song each from ‘Bahurupiya’ (1964), Duniya Kaa Mela (1974), ‘Ek Thhaa Chander Ek Thhee Sudha’ (1970), ‘Jahaan Miley Dharti Aakaash’ (1962) and ‘Naya Mandir’ (1961). Before the release of ‘Film Hi Film’ (1983), these songs from incomplete films were not available for listening. The video footage of these songs made their appearance after the availability of video sharing facilities on the internet.

The song under discussion is rendered by Mohammed Rafi and Manna Dey who sing for Manoj Kumar and Mehmood, respectively. The song is written by Rajendra Krishna and is set to music by Chitragupt.

This is the 600th song composed by Chitragupt (16/11/1917 – 12/01/1991) as a music director to appear on the Blog. After assisting music director, S N Tripathi, Chitragupt got his first independent assignment as a music director in a stunt film, ‘Fighting Hero’ (1946). But it took another six years for him to get his first major hit film, ‘Sindbaad The Sailor’ (1952). He got another boost to his career when he got AVM’s ‘Shiv Bhakt’ (1955) which gave him the exposure to Hindi films made in the South, mostly of the social genre like Bhaabhi’ (1957), ‘Barkha’ (1959), ‘Suhaag Sindoor’ (1961), ‘Main Chup Rahungi’ (1962) ‘Main Bhi Ladki Hoon’ (1964), ‘Mera Qasoor Kyaa Hai’ (1964)’ etc.

Chitragupt reached the high point of his musical career when his films like ‘Oonche Log’(1965), ‘Aakaash Deep’ (1965), ‘Afsaana’ (1966) ‘Aulaad’ (1968) and ‘Vaasana’ (1968) became box office hits. However, his health problems which started in early 1970s restricted him from taking more films on medical ground. During his four decades of musical journey, Chitragupt composed over 1000 songs in about 150 Hindi and Bhojpuri films.
