Today’s song is from yet another Kalpanik (Imaginary) film -Son of Sindbad-1958.

Produced by Balwant Bhatt and Ram Kamlani, the film was directed by the younger brother of Balwant Bhatt – Nanabhai Bhatt. In Gujarat, ‘Nana’ means younger. His real name was Yashwant and his nickname was ‘Batuk’ (means smaller).

Director Nanabhai Bhatt ( 12-6-1915 to 24-4-1999). He was a director in many films. He directed mostly Mythological and stunt films only. Nanabhai was born as Yashwant ( pet name – Batuk) at Porbandar. Since he was the younger one he was called Nanabhai ( opposite to Motabhai-elder brother). This name continued till the end. His father was a doctor. After matriculation, he went to Mumbai in 1934, where his elder brother Balwant Bhatt was working. Balwant started with Imperial, shifted to Sagar and now was with Prakash pictures of Vijay and Shankar Bhatt. He got Nanabhai a job as Sound Recordist.Soon he graduated as Production Executive. He also wrote several screenplays.

In 1942 he directed “Muqabala”, for Homi Wadia, as Batuk Bhatt. Homi Wadia became his good friend. When Homi established his own Basant Pictures, Nanabhai joined him and directed his “Hunterwali ki Beti”-43, with Nadia again. He also did Mauj, Jee Haan, Chaalis Karod etc. He directed about 50 films of various genres like Stunts, Mythologicals, crime, social, costume etc.

Nanabhai’s first wife was Hemlata. He also married Shirin banu, his Heroine of few films. To circumvent the Bigamy law, he married her in a Temple and that too in the presence of Hemlata ! He had 3 children from Hemlata and 6 from Shirin. Mukesh and Mahesh Bhatt are from Shirin. His children and grandchildren married in different religions. Thus his big family was an example of Secularism ! In addition to 9 children Nanabhai also produced 20 films under his own Deepak Pics and Gautam Chitra !

FILMOGRAPHY OF NANABHAI BHATT: 1942: Muqabala; 1943:Hunterwali Ki Beti; Mauj; 1945: Chalis Karod; 1946: Maa Baap Ki Laaj; 1947: Meerabai; 1949: Shaukeen; Veer Ghatotkach; Sudhaar; 1950: Hamara Ghar; Janmashthami; Veer Babruwahan; 1951: Lakshmi Narayan; Daman; Lav Kush; Ram Janma; 1952: Apni Izzat; Baghdad; Sinbad the Sailor; 1954: Toote Khilone; Watan; 1956: Kismet; 1957: Mr X; Ustad; 1958: Chaalbaaz; Son of Sinbad; 1959: Bazigar; Daaka; Kangan; Madam XYZ; Naya Sansar; 1960: Lal Qila; Police Detective; Zimbo Comes to Town; 1961: Teen Ustad; 1962: Baghdad Ki Raatein; Rocket Girl; 1963: Aalapiranthavan; Bhootnath; Cobra Girl; 1964: Samson; 1965: Adhi Raat Ke Baad; Bekhabar; 1966: Shankar Khan; 1967: Arabian Nights; 1968: Jung Aur Aman; 1974: Jeevan Rekha; 1975: Balak Aur Janwar; 1976: Dharti Mata; 1981: Gajara Maru; 1982: Jaya Parvati Vrat.( Thanks to Harish Raghuwanshi ji and Encyclopedia of Indian Cinema for some information.)

The Music Director was Chitragupta (Shrivastav), who was considered as a Melody Master by all singers who sang for him. Especially, Lata was very close to him and his family. Rafi always responded positively whenever he was called by Chitragupta. These 2 stalwarts had tremendous respect for him.

Actually Chitragupta should be counted as No 1 composer in using Lata’s voice, but this fact has been forgotten because he mostly composed for lesser known B and C grade movies unlike Madan Mohan, Roshan, Shankar Jaikishan, C Ramchandra or S D Burman. As we have come to realise by now, he was in no way less capable of composing good tunes for Lata.

Chitragupta was a very homely family man with a middle class mentality. He had a fun group composed of Lata, Usha, Meena, Dilip Dholakiya, Prem Dhawan and Chitragupta. They used to have a lot of fun at the home of Chitragupta. Lata liked their food very much. Chitragupta Shrivastav was a Kayastha ( ” Lalaji ” as they are called in Bihar ) and their Non veg food was excellent.

In the late 80s, I came in personal contact with Chitragupta, when my close friend’s daughter married his elder son. When Chitragupta learned that I liked ” Sattu ki poori ” very much, he called me to his house and we ate Sattu Puri and Aloo Sabji to our heart’s content !

His house in Prabhat building on Khar Road, Bombay had a Music room on the ground floor, where he composed his most tunes during 1959 to 1990. During the early 60s upto 65,he was so busy with work that-according to his son Anand- at one time four Lyricists were writing Lyrics in his home,Anand Bakshi in Garden, Majrooh in a room, Rajendra krishna in the Music room and Prem Dhawan under a palm tree and Chitragupta used to visit one by one to see their progress !!

Chitragupta was such a simple person that when Shankar Jaikishan demanded 5 Lakhs per film,he hesitated to ask for 50000 !

He remained a typical Gentleman till the end. He was expert in using Bihari folk tunes in his songs. He became the First Music Director of the First Bhojpuri film ” Ganga maiyya tori piyri chadhaibo’-1962. his main singers remained Lata, Rafi and Mukesh.

As far as singing songs is concerned, it was his hobby. He must have sung about 30 odd songs in 20 films in his career. Most songs were for S N Tripathi, who was his Guru in film Music.

The cast of the film included Premnath, Jabeen, Bhagwan, Nishi, Tiwari, Shammi, Sunder, Kuldeep Kaur, Cuckoo and many others. Alibaba, Alladin and Sindbad were popular characters during our school days. Not only books of their stories but also films made on them were the targets of all children in those days. It was a thrilling experience to get a book on one of these Heroes, as a gift on “Happy Birthday” ! I am not very sure if today’s young children read these stories. I doubt if they even know these names. These boys seem to favour Harry Potter stories, while the young girls are lost on reading Mills and Boon novels, I suppose ! The big fat book ‘Stories of Arabian Nights’ was the most sought after book (in spite of 5 copies) in our school library. Stories of Alibaba, Alladin, Sindbad the sailor, Hatimtai, Gul Bakavali etc enchanted us.

The film’s story was….

Towards the end of his life, Sindbad decided to settle down to Public Service and Meditation. He was a man of Justice. His only son Yusuf was adventurous and daring. He wanted to become as famous as his father, if not more. Once during an altercation, his opponent gets killed. Yusuf is arrested for murder and brought before his father. Sindbad sentences his son to death. Meanwhile Yusuf’s beloved admits that not Yusuf but she murdered the man and Yusuf was trying to shield her. She is asked to leave this country by the next morning or get a death sentence. Yusuf objects and he too is sentenced to leave with her the next day.

Next day, before Yusuf leaves the country, Sindbad gives him 3 pieces of advice – never to be proud, never to forget God and never trust women. After they leave the next day, that night one of the cousins of Yusuf – Shahnaz – comes to Sindbad and tells him that Yusuf was being cheated by the killed person and his beloved, who were the actual lovers. They wanted to kill Sindbad and Yusuf to become the King of their country. Hearing this, Sindbad asks, then why she killed him. The cousin, Shahnaz, tells that it was Shahnaz who killed him and not his lover.

The king recalls Yusuf and his lover. After interrogation the lover accepts everything. The king awards the death sentence to the lover girl and Yususf is married to Shahnaz.

Actor Sunder was one of the cast members. Looking like a short person, little bulky, with thisk bushy eyebrows, Sunder was once upon a time a Popular Hero in Hindi films. Not only that, he had even sung a number of songs too ! Many such talented artists in Hindi Cinema became either a character artist, a comedian or a member of a villain’s gang in their later part of their career.

For a long time, I was searching for information on comedian Sunder. I got hold of a 2 page detailed article on Sunder, but it was in Punjabi- which I could not read or use. I found a small paragraph on Sunder in Sanjit Narvekar ji’s book ” Eena Meena Deeka”. Lastly, I requested (late) Harish Raghuwanshi ji for help. Despite his failing health, he promptly sent me articles in Hindi, English and Gujarati, on Sunder. He was such a helpful person.

Sunder Singh aka Sunder was born in Sialkot, Punjab on 10th August 1916. His father was working in Madon Theatres, Calcutta. Sunder also started working there. Initially, for a long period,he did Girl’s roles. Once his work was seen by H.S.Rawail (Director in later life). He was quite impressed. Later Rawail started working with R.N.Vaidya as his assistant in direction.Meanwhile Sunder started working in Talkie films. His first film, where he was credited, was ” Na hone wali baat”-38. Before that, Rawail and Vaidya were preparing to make the film Banke Sipahi-37.Rawail recommended Sunder and Vaidya gave him an uncredited small role in that film.

Sunder and Rawail became good friends and started staying in one flat in Calcutta. After a few films here, they both went to Lahore and Sunder got the Hero’s role in the film ” Shukriya”-44. There were 4 Heroines in the film- Ramola, Rooplekha, Manorama and Raksha. Sunder’s role in this film was that of a young man from a village and Ramola was from a City. Sunder’s one song from this film-‘ Nayanon ke teer chala gayee ek shehar ki laundiya’ became very popular all over India, However the song was banned in Punjab due to its lyrics. After this they both came back to Calcutta.

His next film was Albeli-45, in which too there were 4 Heroines- Ramola, Rooplekha, Manorama and Usha. In the 40’s , Sunder acted in many films like Arabian Nights, Baap, Shabri, Chandrashekhar, Ek aurat, Grihalaxmi, Lottery, Samapti, Jhoothi kasme, Savyasachi, Do baaten, Shadi ke baad, Bawra, Khiladi, Nai Bhabhi etc. In Calcutta, Sunder got married to a girl from his community. Rawail left for Bombay. After a few months, Sunder also returned to Bombay.

Rawail was very happy to get him back and gave him roles in almost all of his films. Not only Rawail, but also J.Om Prakash, Mohan Kumar, Lekhraj Bhakri, Manoj kumar etc gave him roles in all their films and he became a busy actor. He was at one time, in great demand. He was quite popular due to his nature. In the decade of 50’s he did 88 films, which increased in the 60s and 70s. In the 80s however films came haltingly.

From singing Hero, he became a Junior artiste( extra), in presence of the new crop of actors. The role of comedians was on decline, as Heroes like Amitabh and others did comedy scenes themselves. His health started troubling him. His last film was probably Bahurani-89. He became ill for a long time and finally died on 5-3-1992. Sunder acted in 436 films. He was a good singer and sang his own songs in early cinemas. In all, Sunder sang 40 songs in 25 films. ( Thanks to Harish Raghuwanshi ji for material for adaptation.)

Here is a song from the film Son of Sindbad-1958, sung by Lata and Geeta. Enjoy….

Thanks for post on Chitragupta. I have not heard this nice song before. Sounds almost like a song from Halaku. 🙂
