(Music Composer R.D. Burman’s Remembrance Anniversary)
——————————————————————

Today 4th January 2026 is the Remembrance Anniversary of Rahul Dev Burman fondly known by his nickname ‘Pancham’.

On this occasion we are paying our tributes to him by coverig a few of his compositions that have not yet been covered in the blog.

So far, we already have covered four songs composed by Pancham (including one shared by Nahm jee, which incidentally is a Pancham composition though not mentioned in the writeup). The earlier posts had songs sung by Mohd Rafi, Amit Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, Yesudas and Kavita Krishnamurty. These four posts have taken care of several human emotions and moods except the feeling of sadness. Also so far, we have not covered a song in the voice of Kishore Kumar composed by Pancham today, without which the tributes will remain incomplete. In this post I am presenting a sad song sung by Kishore Kumar.

This song is from the movie ‘Lava-1985’ which was directed by Ravindra Peepat for ‘Meera Enterprises, Bombay’. This was Ravindra Peepat’s debut as a director. ‘Lava-1985’ was produced by Smt Balbir Kaur. The cast of this movie included Asha Parekh, Dimple Kapadia, Raj Babbar, Rajiv Kapoor, Madan Puri, Rajendra Nath, Narendra Nath, Sashi Saxena, Sudhir, Geet Khanna, Anees Bazmee, Pradeep Suri and others. Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Vikas Anand, and Rama Vij had made friendly appearances in this movie.

‘Lava’ had eight songs including one three part song, which has already been posted on this blog. Anand Bakshi was the lyricist for all the songs in this movie and music was composed by Rahul Dev Burman. The playback singers for this movie are Asha Bhonsle, Manmohan Singh, Kishore Kumar, Shailendra Singh, and Lata Mangeshkar.

I am reproducing my impressions about the movie (without watching it) that I had shared while covering a previous song from this movie :-

The songs from this movie are quite good. I have not watched this movie yet. But, from whatever I have read on internet sources I can say that in this movie Rajiv Kapoor plays ‘Rishi Kapoor’ We have seen it in many that Rishi Kapoor movies that he either loses his memory or gets drowned or meets with some accident that causes him to get separated from his love interest for such a long duration that people presume him dead, and then he reappears creating turmoil in the lives of people. It is this kind of role than Rajiv Kapoor apparently plays in this movie.

Let us now listen to this song which is sung by Kishore Kumar and picturised on Rajeev Kapoor. The audio of this song is longer and contains an additional stanza that is missing in the video of this song. I am not sure if this video is an edited version or not. Let us now listen to this wonderful Pancham composition.

Song-Kuchh log mohabbat kar ke ho jaate hain barbaad (Lava)(1985) Singer-Kishore Kumar, Lyricist-Anand Bakshi, MD-R D Burman

Lyrics

hmm hmm
kuchh log mohabbat kar ke
ho jaate hain barbaad
kuchh log mohabbat kar ke
kar dete hain barbaad
kuchh log mohabbat kar ke
ho jaate hain barbaad
kuchh log mohabbat kar ke
kar dete hain barbaad
kis naam se yaad karenge
ham tum ko aaj ke baad
kuchh log mohabbat kar ke
ho jaate hain barbaad
kuchh log mohabbat kar ke
kar dete hain barbaad

(sound of a train passing)

is khudgarzee ko de kar
ik majbooree kaa naam
is khudgarzee ko de kar
ik majbooree kaa naam
ulfat ke naam ko tumne
kar daalaa hai badnaam
upar se bholey panchhee
tum andar se saiyyaad
kuchh log mohabbat kar ke
ho jaate hain barbaad
kuchh log mohabbat kar ke
kar dete hain barbaad

ik roz kahaa thhaa tumne
hamko apnaa mehboob
ik roz kahaa thhaa tumne
hamko apnaa mehboob
mehboob badalne kaa ye
andaaz bahot hai khoob
is baat pe ham khush ho kar
dete hain mubaarakbaad
kuchh log mohabbat kar ke
ho jaate hain barbaad
kuchh log mohabbat kar ke
kar dete hain barbaad

chup rahe zubaan e khanjar
chhuptaa naheen ye ilzaam
chup rahe zubaan e khanjar
chhuptaa naheen ye ilzaam
letaa hai lahoo kaa katraa
katraa qaatil kaa naam
kyaa chain se jeene degee
tumko meree fariyaad
kuchh log mohabbat kar ke
ho jaate hain barbaad
kuchh log mohabbat kar ke
kar dete hain barbaad
