Zulfon ke saaye
Rukh pe giraaye
Shaidaayi mere
Dil ko banaaye
Shabnam ke moti
Pal pal pirotaa hai
Kya karun haay
Kuchh kuchh hotaa hai
The above is the mukhda first written for this song Tum paas aaye yoon muskuraaye ), which is the only song which is so far posted in the blog of the film “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai(1998)”. The lyricist Sameer Anjaan wrote this mukhda first, which was rejected by Karan Johar and then he rewrote it as ‘tum paas aaye yoon mukuraaye” used for the song.
Without meaning to or searching for them, I have now seen lengthy interviews of two celebrities connected with this film. I even saw 15-minute-long climax scene of this film. So much help from youtube I never expected, but glad that it did.
First, I saw the interview of Lyricist Sameer Anjaan. He talks at length about his experiences in the film industry, working with various music directors. He is also the one with the record of writing highest number of songs. His tally in the blog is as below:
| Lyricist | Songs in the blog | Songs penned in career |
|---|---|---|
| Sameer | 97 | 3530 |
So, he is still shy of his first century in this blog which can be remedied soon. I am into wedding songs and also qawwalis recently, so I am planning to write a post of wedding qawwali, as genuine as they come, which is also written by Sameer.
Next, I saw Kajol’s interview, and forgot all about the earlier seen interview. This was Kajol and it was hilarious. She is so spontaneous and genuine. A real life “Guddi”. Yes, I am remined of Jaya Bhaduri in her films of 70’s. There was a gap, when Jaya left films, and that gap I think was filled by Kajol and her roles in 90’s and 2000’s. And she did many different types of films. I don’t want to use the word replacement, but ni’amul-badal sound more like what I want to say. She has done less films but all of them had women centric stories and did well also on the box office. The saga of “Dilwale Dulhaniya Le jaayenge” is there for all to see. She is also one of the few who has important films with all the three Khans. Kajol objects furiously to they being clubbed together as the 3 Khans. She insists that all three are entirely different personalities all together with nothing in common. She is so vehement that the interviewer had to agree.
In this film, she is paired opposite both Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan. The situation is like this song in “Dil hai ke manta Nahin”;
Tu pyaar hai kisi aur ka, tujhe chaahta koyi aur hai
Tu nazar mein hai kisi aur ki, tujhe maangta koyi aur hai
For the benefit of those who have missed this film or have forgotten the story, here is a brief synopsis.
“The film begins with Shah Rukh Khan(Rahul) a widower, living in Mumbai with his 8-year-old daughter and mother (Farida Jalaal). The wife Rani Mukherjee died soon after the daughter is born, has left letters for the girl to read on each birthday. They have named the daughter Anjali, possibly after their college mate Anjali played by Kajol.
In the 8th letter to be read on 8th birthday by Anjali, Rani Mukherjee has given the full story of college romance and marriage. Rahul (SRK) and Anjali (Kajol) are fast friends in the school and college phase; they keep fighting and making up. In fact, the chant in the college campus is “Rahul-Anjali ka jhagda”. Anjali is a tom boy and no inclination to be feminine, coy girl.
Enter Rani Mukherjee, a stylishly glamorous, girl returned to India after studying in Oxford. She is also the principal (Anupam Kher)’s daughter. It takes no time for Rahul to fall for Rani Mukherjee and vice a versa. At the same time, Anjali also realizes that Rahul is the love of her life and she cannot love anyone else. But it is too late to do anything about it. So, she leaves college and goes back to her hometown.
There is that scene on the Railway Station, where Anjali is leaving town without telling anyone. Rahul comes to the station at the last moment with Rani in tow, and tries to dissuade Anjali from leaving the college like this.
He says “main exam ke tayyari kaise karungaa tumhare begair, fail ho jaaunga”,
to which Anjali replies “tum kar loge, Rani hai na tumhare saathh, ab tum uss ka sar khaao”.
Rahul says “to iss ka matlab hai ke tum sirf college hi nahi mujhe bhi chhod ke jaa rahi ho, issi liye tum ne mujhe bataaya bhi nahi”.
He is hurt and turns away from Anjali, the train starts, and he again runs behind the train to talk to Anjali, promising to keep in touch.
The train station scene is reminiscent of the final scene in “DDLL”.
Anjali goes back to Delhi (Or wherever) and they change house, and never to be in touch again.
After college finishes, Rahul and Rani get married, as planned. After sometime, Rani dies due to complications in child birth. But Rani has this feeling that she has come between the best friends, who cannot be without each other. And she knows the reason for Anjali’s leaving never to return. She writes the whole thing for the young Anjali to read and tells her that her father is alone, but will never say. The young Anjali must seek help of elders in the family and somehow unite Rahul and Anjali once more. This is the intermission point.
After intermission the film begins again, with this engagement function song. Anjali is finally agreed to marry Aman(Salman Khan), who is too much in love with her and wanting to marry her for some years.
I will stop the story narration here. I saw the song after many years while writing the lyrics. I have seen this movie in the theatre with family. So that intermission, and the song – intro of Salman Khan in the story is etched. I was not knowing that Salman Khan is in the film, was he kept out of the publicity posters also?
A trivia about this song and shooting is here:
Saajanji Ghar Aaye – Karan Johar was distraught when Salman Khan had refused to wear a suit for this song. Salman had said that he would wear a t-shirt and jeans and would start a new trend of wearing casual wear for weddings. It was only when Karan Johar had literally cried that Salman agreed to wear the suit.
A brat that Salman Khan was, one can imagine him giving a tough time to Karan Johar. I had read somewhere that Shah Rukh Khan had suggested to rope in Salman Khan to play the role of Aman in the film. It seems that Salman Khan was reluctant to play side hero’s role in the film, so he might have been credited as a special appearance in the films credit. Salman Khan is Senior to Shah Rukh in the film industry by 2 years or so. Both Aamir Khan and Salman Khan’s debut films were in 1988 and Shah Rukh’s first release was in 1992.
“Saajan ji ghar aaye” is the only song for Salman Khan in the film. He ended up wearing the black jacket over black T-shirt in the song, but in the final scene, where he is finally marrying Anjali, he is wearing a proper suit with a tie in bright blue.
I have seen the filmfare awards function of 1999, when this film had won many awards there, and all were performing on stage. Kajol married Ajay Devan a few days after that function.
The songs are good and catchy, the best being “Tujhe yaad na meri aayi kisi se ab kya kehna”. In this song, Kumar Sanu is singing for Salman Khan, Alka Yagnik for Kajol, and Kavita Krishnamurthy is singing for Reema Lagoo, who plays Kajol’s mother. Jatin-Lalit are the music directors.
