Today’s song is the last song from the Social film Sangam-1954.
There were 3 films titled Sangam, made in 1941, 1954 and 1964. The Raj Kapoor film of 1964 was a Hit film. Today’s film was produced by J.P.Agrawal and was directed by Kiran Kumar (not the son of actor Jeevan). The cast of the film included Kamini Kaushal (real name Uma Kashyap), Shekhar (real name Indriya Daman), Shashikala, Jeevan (real name Omprakash Dar), K.N.Singh, Murad, Chaman Puri, Ratan Kumar (real name Syed Nazar Ali), Neera and others. The Music Director was Ram Ganguly. His assistant fort his film was Suresh Kumar (Shah).
There are cases in history, where Talent alone has not helped. The Luck factor plays a vital role in one’s life. But then, what is Luck ? Call it opportunity, recognition, fame, money…. call it what you may like to, but Luck is a factor.
Otherwise, so many talented actors, singers, composers, directors or even Producers would not rot in the film industry. The case of the film ‘Jai Santoshi Maa’-75 can be quoted in this connection. If it was not for Luck, how come a low budget film, made by a repeatedly failed producer Satram Rohra, became one of the top blockbusters of all time ? Surprisingly, after this movie, the next ventures of Satram Rohra were again failures. Though he was benefited by ‘Jai Santoshi Maa’-75, neither the Music Director C. Arjun nor the film’s director Vijay Sharma got any benefit from the film. Probably they were not as lucky.
I do not want to dwell upon examples and a lengthy claim in favour of Luck, but let us not forget that many talented artistes, who showed great promise with their initial achievements, failed inexplicably, later in their career. At least two examples can be quoted, of composer Ram Ganguly and singer Mubarak Begum (RIP).
Unfortunately, Ram Ganguly has no identity beyond his most famous film “Aag”-48 ( his only 3rd film), making many people think that this was the only film that he did. Sometimes he is mistaken even for composer Ramlal (choudhari).
Born on 6-8-1916, Ram Ganguly soon achieved expertise in playing Violin, at the age of just 10 years. He was most appreciated when he played Violin at the All India Congress Party Session at Calcutta in 1933. Listening to his Violin, composer R C Boral offered him a job in New Theatres immediately. He remained 7 years in new Theatres. First he was assistant to Timir Baran for film Devdas, then assisted R C Boral and finally assisted Pankaj Mallick for film Dushman There he met Prithviraj Kapoor and they became friends. Following Kapoor, Ram too proceeded to Bombay. He started a Dance and Music school in Khandala,in 1946. In 1943, he joined Prithwi Theatres as a Music Director for stage dramas. His music for the famous drama “Deewar” in 1945 became popular. Raj Kapoor had sung a song in that drama, for which HMV took out a record also- Hum babu naye nirale hain.
Ram’s first film as a film MD was Jayant Desai’s “Maharana Pratap”-46. He did one more film for Desai, “Maha Tulsi Vrinda”-47. When Raj Kapoor made his first film, “Aag”-48, selection of Ram Ganguly as its MD was natural, because Raj knew him very well from the Prithwi Days. Ram Ganguli took Tabla player Shanker and Harmonium player Jaikishen as his assistants, having known them earlier. Little did he know at that time that this pair would edge him out from Raj camp and establish themselves there. Ram Ganguli gave excellent songs for the film Aag-48, sung by Shamshad, Mukesh and Sailesh Mukherjee.
In Spite of his good performance, he was thrown out by Raj Kapoor for his next venture Barsaat, for 2 reasons. One – Ganguli being an old guard did not fit into the future plans of Raj kapoor, who wanted to innovate and bring in New ideas and Two, he was told that Ganguly was trying to use Barsat tunes for outside producers. While the first reason seems to be plausible, the second reason seems to be an excuse. God only knows the truth, but S-J were capable of anything- if one knows what they did in the coming years to win Awards and contracts.
In all, he gave music to just 14 films with 146 songs and 1 unreleased film. His films were Maharana pratap-46, Mahatulsi Vrinda-47, Aag-48, Jalsa-48, Banvasi-48, Anmol moti-49, Ram Darshan-50,Deepak-51, Sangam-54, Gawaiya-54,(this film also saw the end of Surendra’s singing career), When Prithwiraj kapoor decided to make his famous drama Paisa-57 into a film, he called only Ram Ganguly. Originally, for the drama too he had been the MD. He gave good songs but they were not popular. Then came Ten o’clock-58 and then the next film was Saaya-61. His last film was Suhani Raat-74. In between, a film Postmaster-55 remained unreleased. Because of his songs in the film Aag-48, singer Sailesh Mukherjee came into the limelight. He had only 2 songs in it but both became hits. His duet with Shamshad, “dekh chand ki ore”sounds fresh and sweet even today.
Slowly Ram Ganguly was forgotten . He stopped getting films. No one came to him. Finally, frustrated, he left for Calcutta and died there sometime in 1983.
Now let us know more about Ram Ganguly’s assistant in this film- Suresh Kumar (Shah) – a name not many readers can recollect. Readers from Gujarat, perhaps, may remember his name as Suresh Kumar Shah had given music to some Gujarati films.
Sursh kumar Shah had a 4-fold career in films.
FIRST he started his Musical career with a Gujarati film-” Choodi Chandiyo”-1950 and continued to give music to 22 Gujarati films, the last being-Maaru Saasario sona ni khan-1998.
SECOND ly, he paired with other Music Directors-with Shailesh Mukherjee in Suhag Sindoor, with Talwar and Shankar Dasgupta in ‘Hotel’-1956 and only with Talwar in another 11 films, the last film being-“Char Chakram’-1965.
Thirdly, he gave music independently to 11 films, starting with-Jadui Angoothi-1964 and ending with- Waqt se Pehle-1985.
Thus he featured in 22 Gujarati films and 24 Hindi films as a Music Director.
FOURTH ly, he gave music to some Marathi films also, like Gharcha Bhedi, gadbad Ghotala and kuldeepak etc.
I had learnt that in his last days he lived in Parle,Mumbai and was connected with Marathi dramas.
The story of the film was one that professed “crime does not pay”.
Mangal is a very ambitious but poor person. He is always worried about the future of his only son Nandi- who is not very clever. He wanted Nandi to have a lot of wealth and happiness, but Nandi showed no talent of any type. Mangal hatched a plot and killed his employer Seth jamnadas, by strangulating him. Then he took his small kid and threw him from above a hill. Providentially, the kid survived and was brought up by a good person. He is now called Badal, instead of his real name Sunder.
Here Mangal props up his son Nandi, as Sunder and they both start enjoying life. Years pass by. Badal grows up and falls in love with Kamini. Once by coincidence, by seeing his locket, she realises that Badal is Sunder- the real son of Seth Jamnadas. Kamini, with the help of police and some friends, collects proof and exposes Mangal and Nandi.
Mangal is arrested for his most amangal deeds and taken away by police, while Kamini and Sunder unite happily.
The film had 7 songs. Today’s song is sung by Madhubala Jhaveri. Madhubala Jhaveri was born on 19-5-1935 in Bombay’s predominantly Marathi locality Girgaon. Her mother Heerabai and aunt (mausi) Shyamalabai Majgaonkar were singers. They belonged to Sawantwadi, in Konkan in coastal Maharashtra. These sisters started a Music school ” Shri Swami Samarth Sangeet Vidyalay” in 1929. Singers like Mohantara Talpade and Malini Jaywant were their students.
Heerabai’s husband Vanjibhai Jhaveri was from Surat. He worked in the Ford company in Bombay. Madhubala was third among 5 children – 2sons and 3 daughters. She learnt many musical instruments. She did M.A. in Music from S.N.D.T. University and Sangeet Visharad from Gandharva Mahavidyalaya.
She was invited for a Marathi film, by Snehal Bhatkar. Then Manohar lal Arora gave her an opportunity to sing for the film Bhoole Bhatke-52. However, her songs in film Rajpoot-51 were released first. Hansraj Behl became her Mentor. He gave her further training and also arranged for her Urdu tuition.
Madhubala sang in 14 films for Hansraj Behl. She also sang for C.Ramchandra, Mukesh, Jamal Sen, Bhole Shreshtha, Avinash Vyas, Krishna Dayal, Vinod, manna Dey, A.R.Qureshi, Shankar Dasgupta, Ram ganguli, Snehal Bhatkar, Dhumi khan, Ramlal, Bipin-Babul, Husnlal – Bhagatram, Shankar-Jaikishen, Sanmukh upadhyay, Shivram etc.
She got married to Madan Mohan Chawla in 1958, She had 2 daughters and 1 son. Husband died in 1990. When the Hindi film industry left her high and dry, she sang on All India Radio. She did shows in the USA, Canada, Europe and Africa. Her Bhavgeets in Marathi were very popular. She sang in Swahili language, Punjabi, Gujarati and Marathi. Madhubala died on 11-9-2013. ( based on an article in the book ” Swar Sagar” by Swapnil Porey).
With today’s song being the last one, the film is getting YIPPEED ! Enjoy the song….
