Hullo Atuldom
Shatranj (meaning Chess) is a 1969 released, spy thriller film co-produced and directed by S. S. Vasan (in his final directorial venture.) N.N. Sippy was the co-producer. It starred Rajendra Kumar and Waheeda Rehman in the lead, with Mehmood, Madan Puri, Shashikala, Helen, Achala Sachdev, Manmohan Krishna and Agha in pivotal roles.
The film had 8 songs and a musical piece (probably a dance number, I need to see the film) taking the total to 9 melodies by Shankar-Jaikishan. The lyricists in the film were Indeevar (1 song), Hasrat Jaipuri (4 songs), S.H. Bihari (2songs) and Kiran Kalyani (1 song).

We are revisiting the film today on the occasion of the 88th birthday of the elegant Waheeda Rehman.
Waheeda Rehman made her acting debut with the Telugu film ‘Rojulu Marayi’ in 1955. She gained stardom through her collaborations with Hindi filmmaker Guru Dutt in the classic dramas ‘Pyaasa’, ‘Kaagaz Ke Phool’, ‘Chaudhvin Ka Chand’ and ‘Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam.’ etc. She shot to fame with roles in noteworthy films like ‘Guide’, ‘Neel Kamal’, ‘Ram Aur Shyam’, ‘Khamoshi’, ‘Reshma Aur Shera’, and many more like ‘Mujhe Jeene Do’, ‘Teesri Kasam’ etc. ‘Kabhie Kabhie’, ‘Chandni’, ‘Lamhe’, ‘Trishul’, ‘Mashaal’ etc. were her collaborations with the Chopra brothers Yash Chopra & B.R. Chopra. The 1970s/1980s saw her notable performances in film like ‘Namkeen’, ‘Phagun’, ‘Trisandhya’. After a brief hiatus, she returned to cinema with select appearances in acclaimed social dramas such as ‘Water’, ‘Rang De Basanti’, ‘Delhi 6’ etc. She was last seen in the 2021 coming-of-age sports drama film ‘Skater Girl’, directed by Manjari Makijany.
A small trivia about Manjari Makijany is that she the daughter of Sambha a.k.a MacMohan.
