There are some popular Kishore Kumar songs that were inspired from songs that were originally created in 1930 and 1940s and they were from movies featuring Ashok Kumar. For example, Kishore Kumar’s “Padosan” song “ek chatur naar karke singaar” was inspired from “Jhoola”(1941) song, “ek chatur naar kar kar singaar” which was sung by Ashok Kumar and it was picturised on Ashok Kumar himself. For that matter, even the movie “Padosan” was inspired from “Jhoola”(1941).

Then there is Kishore Kumar’s popular song “koi humdum na raha” from “Jhumroo”(1961). This song was inspired from “Jeewan Naiyya”(1936) song Koi humdum na raha which was sung by Ashok Kumar and was picturised on him as well.

We are familiar with Kishore Kumar’s song “duniya kahtee mujhko paagal, main kahta dunia paagal” from from “Haay Mera Dil”(1968). This song was inspired from another Ashok Kumar film, namely “Janmbhoomi”(1936). But this song, unlike the above mentioned songs, was not sung by Ashok Kumar. Rather this song was sung by Saraswati Devi, the music director. It is interesting too note that Saraswati Devi was the music director of all these three original songs discussed above.

“Janmbhoomi”(1936) was directed by Franz Osten for Bombay Talkies, Bombay. The movie had Devika Rani and Ashok Kumar in lead roles. The movie also had Chandraprabha, Kaiser,Pithawala, Mumtaz Ali, Pramila, Kamta Prasad etc in it.

“Janmbhoomi”(1936) had ten songs in it. Four songs have been covered in the blog. Here is this song “Duniya kahtee mujhko paagal” which is sung by Saraswati Devi. Incidentally, the song is lip synced on screen by Chardaprabha, who was Saraswati Devi’s younger sister. J S Kashyap was the lyricist.

Incidentally, the Kishore Kumar song that is inspired from this song is not yet covered in the blog. In a way, it is fitting that the song that came first should be covered first.

Lyrics

duniya kahtee mujhko paagal
main kahtee duniya ko paagal
duniya kahtee mujhko paagal
main kahtee duniya ko paagal
duniya kahtee mujhko paagal

naaz manon paida karte hain
phir bhee woh bhookhon marte hain
hum bhee bhookhe hain
par dekho mastee alag see bane phirte hain
woh rote hain hum hanste hain
woh rote hain hum hanste hain
phir woh paagal ya hum paagal
duniya kahtee mujhko paagal
duniya kahtee mujhko paagal
main kahtee duniya ko paagal
duniya kahtee mujhko paagal

hawa hai jeewan
mittee sona
doodh bharee maa kee chhaatee
phir bhee shehron mein phirte maare maare
leela rab kee
woh rote hain aur main hanstee
woh rote hain aur main hanstee
phir woh paagal ya main paagal
duniya kahtee mujhko paagal
duniya kahtee mujhko paagal
main kahtee duniya ko paagal
duniya kahtee mujhko paagal
