Hullo Atuldom
“Jangal Mein Mangal” is a 1972 Bollywood romance film produced & directed by Rajendra Bhatia. The film starred Kiran Kumar, Reena Roy, Sonia Sahni & Pran in important characters. The others in the cast were Balraj Sahni (special appearence I think), Chandrasekhar, Arpana Choudhary, Gulshan Bawra, Paintal, Arvind Trivedi, Jayshree T, Meena T, Narendranath, Upendra Trivedi, Birbal, Padma Khanna etc etc. The film had music by Shankar Jaikishan with Hasrat Jaipuri & Neeraj as the lyricists. There were seven songs that had Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhosle, Usha Mangeshkar, & Mohd Rafi as the playback singers. The song with this post has two versions.
The film was a remake of 1969 Malayalam film -‘Rest House’ with Prem Nazir the reigning Malayalam superstar of the period as central character.
The story of the film was as follows:-
Biology Professor Laxmi (Sonia Sahni), in the company of nine of her students, and a convent nun, Sophia (Meena Roy), go on a field trip in Kerala, Southern India. Upon arrival, they decide to stay there at a Guest House, which also happens to house another group of students, this time all male, headed by Retired Colonel M.K. Das (Pran). After several misunderstandings both the groups compromise and decide to pass the rest of their temporary stay in peace. But fate has other plans for them, for Sophia is killed, apparently murdered by a zombie-like creature, dressed in black, who lives in a nearby grave-yard. Before the police and the others could react, a male student is killed. Three male students do encounter this creature, but it manages to over-power all three, and no amount of force or bullets can stop it. Its main motive seems to kill anyone who stands in its way, including the police!
The following songs from the film are already on the blog
| Song | Date of post | Remarks |
|---|---|---|
| Tum kitnee khoobsoorat ho | 17 January 2009 | (debut on blog) |
| Kal kee na karo baat | 4 April 2011 | (mentions the 2011 Cricket World Cup, and we are having this years’ Cricket World Cup on) |
| Chhoree mujhko hua tujhse pyaar | 12 February 2014 | (on the birth anniversary of Pran) |
As we can see from the above the last post from the film “Jangal Mein Mangal” was 12 years back. I had planned this post for yesterday, which was the 106th birth anniversary of Pran Saab (as versatile actor Pran was fondly/ respectfully addressed).
Pran had a six-decade career in Hindi cinema and is one of the most celebrated actors in the industry. His acting is said to have been effective enough to desist people from naming their children “Pran” because of his negative roles, while the industry had started calling him “Pran Sahab”. His favourite line “Barkhurdaar” became immensely popular. In fact, he was paid more than most male leads of his time, often most people would go to watch movies to only watch Pran.
In 2000, Bunny Reuben, a film journalist, authored a biography on Pran, titled “…and Pran”. The name of this book arises from the fact that in the majority of Pran’s movies, his name was credited in the last after all the other actors, “….and Pran”. His biography, “…and Pran”, was a tribute to about 250 of his 350 movies that had his name at the end of the credits, usually with the words “…and Pran” and sometimes “…above all, Pran”. In 2012, he gave his handprint for “Legend’s Walk”, a waterfront promenade in Bandra. In 2022, Pran was placed in Outlook India’s “75 Best Bollywood Actors” list.
Pran saab was a three time Filmfare Best supporting actor winner. He was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke award & Padma Bhushan awards by the Government of India.
We are remembering the actor who had a way with his moustache, hair (wigs) and cigar/ pipe/ cigarette smoke swirls. In this movie too, he played the two characters with distinct “getups”.
