“Samaaj Ko Badal Daalo”(1947) was directed by Vijay Bhatt for Prakash Pictures, Bombay. The movie had Arun Ahuja, Mridula,Yakub,Umakant, Leela Pawar, Bikram Kapoor etc in it. This social reform movie dealt with the topic of mismatched marriages.
The movie had seven songs in it. Six songs from the movie have been covered in the past. As many as five of these songs have been covered by our beloved inhouse encyclopaedia, Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh. In his writeups, he has given the story of the movie as well. Here is what he has to say about this movie :-
Prakash Pictures produced the film ‘Samaj Ko Badal Dalo’ in 1947, with story, screenplay and dialogues by Pt. Girish. The MD was Khemchand Prakash and the film was directed by Vijay Bhatt.
The cast of film Samaj ko badal dalo-47 was Arun Ahuja, Mridula,Yakub,Umakant, Leela Pawar, Bikram Kapoor etc etc.Kishore (Arun) and Manorama (Mridula) are in love with each others but unable to get married. Mridula’s father is a clerk, who can’t afford to pay the dowry demanded by Arun’s family. Jayant (Yakub) is a widower, and Mridula is married off to him. His cruel behaviour becomes apparent when he starts torturing Mridula soon after their marriage. Arun’s parents get him married to the rich Champa (Leela Pawar) who is in love with someone else. Arun helps her get married to Naresh, the man she loves, by giving her a divorce. Arun watches the torture inflicted on Mridula and the story then continues through tense scenes where eventually Arun kills Jayant and unwittingly Mridula too, following which he’s sent to a mental asylum having been declared insane.

HFGK has mentioned three lyricists viz Roopdas, Pt Indra and Qamar Jalalabadi for the seven songsof the movie. It is noticed that HFGK has given the name of lyriicists for only four songs (Roopdas- 3 songs and Qamar Jalalabadi- 1 song). Name of singer is given for only one song as Amirbai Karnataki (Naina ro ro kar rah jaaye ) but that name is incorrect, as this song is sung by Binapani Mukherjee. So the names of the singers for the songs of the movie have been taken from the details given by uploaders and corroborated by listening to the voices and identifying them.
The seventh and final song is mentioned in HFGK as “dheere dheere chale aao o o morey sapne”. Searching for this song online with this mukhda draws a blank. However, there is one song on YT that goes “chale aao dheere dheere”. The uploader mentions this song as belnging to “Samaj Ko Badal Daalo”(1947). He gives the name of singer as Rajkumari, lyricist as Afzal Lahori and music director as Khemchand Prakash.
On listening to this song, it turns out that it is a duet sung by a male voice and a female voice. Female voice does sound like Rajkumari. Those days records contained the names of music director and lyricist but not singers, so the uploader could well have given the names of music director and lyricist from the record and that of female singer from his own guess. But the name of the lyricist given by him contradicts the names of lyricists as given in HFGK. I request our knowledgeable readers who may have access to this record to help confirm / refute the name of the lyricist for this song. I also request our knowledgeable readers to help identify the male voice.
The uploader has uploaded this song four years ago, but this song is so obscure on YT that it has attracted only 22 views,zero likes and zero comments when I stumbled upon it. I have decided to go with the details given by the uploader for the time being.
While I have managed to get most of the lyrics right to my satisfaction, there are a few words in the lyrics where I may have erred. I request our readers with keener ears to help fill in the blanks/suggest corrections as applicable.
