“Aa Jaa Sanam”(1975) was produced by S A Mehmood and directed by Yusuf Naqvi. The movie had Feroz Khan,Tanuja,Deven Verma, Shabnam, Sulochana Chatterjee, S N Banerjee, Shivraj, Mukri, Meenaxi, S A Baker, Kalyani Bai etc in it.

This movie which began to be shot as a black and white movie saw a delayed release in 1975. Sadanand Kamath jee, who covered a song of this movie, gave the story of the movie there which is reproduced here :-

Satish (Feroz Khan) is on his way to meet his parent in a village when he is caught in a thunderstorm and lightening on a dark night. Shanti (Tanuja) comes out from her hut to tie her goat when she accidentally dashes with Satish. In the split of the lightening, Satish has a glimpse of Shanti after which she turns back to her hut. Momentarily, Satish is mesmerised by her beauty, She brings her father (Shivraj) out who directs Satish to stay overnight in a Government guest house where he is a caretaker.

Next day, before leaving on his way to his parent’s house, Satish visits a local temple where he meets Shanti. It is a love at first sight. After reaching his parents’ house, he finds that an ear-ring was struck in his coat. Surely, it belongs to Shanti who had accidentally dashed against him in the night. Next day, he visits Shanti’s village and returns her ear-ring with a promise to take a vow in front of the temple to marry her in his next visit.

But the next visit never happens. Satish’s father has a heart attack and he has no way to inform Shanti about it. By the time, his father recovers, it is time for Satish to return to his medical college for his final examination. Shanti is waiting for Satish to return but now she is worried about him and about his promise. On the other side, Satish is also feeling sad about her separation from Shanti. His roommate, Kaushal (Deven Verma) suggests him to first concentrate on his examinations after which he can plan his visit to meet Shanti in her village.

After the exams get over, Satish visits Shanti’s village and finds that Shanti has left the village after the death of her father with an intention to live with her uncle. However, after reaching the place, she comes to know that he has migrated to a nearby town. A truck driver offers her a lift to drop her in the town but on the way, he tries to molest her. Shanti escapes from the truck driver by jumping into a river. A couple on the picnic at the shore of the river see her in the flowing river. The man jumps into the river and rescues her. The man’s girlfriend, Kamini (Shabnam) takes Shanti to her home. Her parents (Sulochana Chatterjee and S N Banerjee) treats her well and over a period of time, Shanti is well settled with the new family.

Both Kamini and Shanti develop a close bonding with each other. They exchange information about each other freely. Kamini is modern in her outlook and she has a steady boyfriend, Arun (?) who has become her fiancé after her parents has given the consent to marry him. Arun is undergoing training to become a pilot. Shanti also reveals to Kamini about a person whose name she does not remember. He had promised her to marry but has not turned up. She blames her fate.

Not knowing the whereabouts of Shanti, Satish returns to his medical college. Both Satish and Kaushal clears their final examinations and they become the doctors. In the absence of any work, Satish spends most of his time in clubs and hotels. Kaushal meets Satish’s father who is worried about Satish not doing anything after passing the exams. Kaushal has come with a proposal to open a clinic with Satish for which he would require some help from him. Satish’s father readily agrees as this would keep Satish occupied with his work. They open Shanti Nursing Home which keeps Satish busy.

Kamini’s parents and Shanti are busy with the last minute buying and other arrangement for Kamini’s wedding when they get the news through a telegram that Arun has died in a plane crash. Kamini is devasted by the news and more so when she reveals to Shanti that she is carrying the child of Arun. Shanti assures her that it will remain a secret and she will help her out. Coincidentally, Shanti approaches Shanti Nursing Home run by Satish and Kaushal and meet Dr Kaushal for abortion which he refuses to handle by saying that their nursing home is meant for saving the life and not killing. .

Having failed in her first option, Shanti suggests to Kamini’s parents that she takes Kamini to a temporary stay outside for a change of scene which may help Kamini to recover from the trauma. They immediately agree. Both Kamini and Shanta proceed to Dehra Dun.

In the meanwhile, Kaushal gets a telephonic call from Kamini’s father and he is very happy that a well-known patient will add value to their nursing home. The patient is Kamini’s mother who always complaints about some or the other medical problems and Satish often visits the house on call. After some treatments, Kamini’s mother feels better. They are impressed with Satish whose father is a friend of Kamini’s father. So, Satish is on their radar as a prospective groom for Kamini.

After few months, Kamini and Shanti returns along with a baby which Shanti claims of as her. Kamini’s parents are aghast with the new developments. They are in verge of expelling Shanti from their house. However, Kamini strongly opposes her expulsion from the house as she needs Shanti.

One day, Satish visits Kamini’s house on a routine check-up call. Shanti sees him and rushes towards him when she falls from the stairs and becomes unconscious. Satish is shocked to see Shanti but before he reacts, he takes her in the car to his nursing home where she recuperates. She is very happy that after a long separation, she is united with Satish. However, very soon on his next visit to Kamini’s house, Satish discovers that Shanti is the mother of a child to whom she is tending. Shanti cannot tell Satish the reality as this would put Kamini in trouble. Kamini is not aware that Shanti loves Satish. All she can reveal to him is that she has not married. So, he presumes that she is an unwed mother. Satish leaves her in a huff.

Kamini’s parents are pressuring Kamini to accept Satish as her husband while Kaushal is convincing his friend, Satish that he should get married to Kamini. Afterall how long he can get submerged in Shanti’s unfaithfulness. With great persuasion both Kamini and Satish reluctantly agree. Satish Parents (S A Baker and Kalyani Bai) meets Kamini’s parents and fix the engagement date.

In the midst of the engagement ceremony, Kamini’s child faints and Satish admits the child in the hospital. After some time, Satish comes back and reports that the child is no more. Kamini’s mother blames Shanti that ever since she had come to her house, unfortunates things are happening. Kamini has lost her fiancé, Arun and now the child is dead on the engagement day. She expels Shanti from the house. At this juncture, Kamini spills the beans and reveals the truth. After hearing this, Satish runs out in search of Shanti but cannot find her. Reluctantly, he returns to his house where he finds Shanti has taken the shelter in an open verandah of his house for the night. Satish and Shanti gets united.

We notice that three of the songs were penned by M K Javed who was none other than Manohar Lal Khanna, father of Usha Khanna, the music director of the movie. Other two songs were penned by Kafeel Azar.

Here is the sixth and final song of “Aa Jaa Sanam”(1975). It is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Usha Timothi. Indeewar is the lyricist. It is a lullaby song picturised on Shabnam (I guess it is Shabnam from the story given above) and Tanuja who take turns to sing this lullaby to calm Shabnam’s baby.

Voice of the two singers sound very similar and it is difficult to tell them apart. There is no consistency in singing voices and the lip syncing, with the result that both actresses end up lip syncing in both voices.

With this song, all the songs of “Aa Jaa Sanam”(1975) have been covered in the blog. This movie thus joins the list of movies that have been YIPPEED in the blog.
