Rafi Sb – In The Seventies – 9

(1975 – Solo)

Wow, vintage Rafi, if ever it were.

As I was browsing for the song from 1975, I bumped into this very old friend, whom I had not met for a long time. But oh, what a lovely remembrance this one. A wonderful gem of a song, that is lost in obscurity, even though the film is comparatively not very old.

The film is ‘Aa Jaa Sanam’, making its debut on the blog today. Music is by Usha Khanna, and the lyrics are by a poet named MK Javed. People familiar with this name will immediately recognize that he is none other than Manohar Lal Khanna, father of Usha Khanna.

On screen, the song is performed by Feroze Khan, serenading a quiet and smiling Tanuja. The way the song starts, it appears as if this could be a song played in thoughts. At the beginning of the clip, Tanuja is seen lying on the bed, almost as if in very deep sleep. Feroze Khan is next to her, examining her beauty from very close quarters. And then the song starts. A very rapid flash of the scene at the end of the song, gives a feeling as if returning to the same scene as at the beginning. That would indicate a song being played in imagination.

I would request other knowledgeable readers to please add more information about this film. Being a black and white film released in 1975, it gives a feeling as if this was another of those films, long time in making, and got released much later than expected. I am not sure, and I would like to get opinions from others.

Given Tanuja’s career graph, this may well have been her last film in a leading role. In almost all other films that we see in her filmography, starting with ‘Amir Gharib’ of 1974, she has played side roles. 1974 did see the release of two other films in which she was the leading lady – ‘Imtihaan’ and ‘Humshakal’ in which she shares the leading lady credits with Moushumi Chatterji. I do not recall any other of her films in which she appeared as a leading lady after Imtihaan’ and ‘Humshakal’. Whereas for Feroze Khan, his career was still on the rise. He was already a producer and director, and he would go on to produce more of his own films, appearing as the lead hero himself. Besides films from other banners of course.

A lovely melody from Usha Khanna. Rafi Sb – incomparable as ever.

Listen and enjoy.

Sudhir ji,

The film Aa jaa sanam was made sometime between 1967 to 1971,from what things are seen in the film decor, dresses and other things in addition.
It is certainly not 1975. Tanuja gave birth to kajole on 5-8-1974,so the film can not be from 74 or 75 certainly.
It is interesting to read comments from readers of memsaab on this link, where she has reviewed this film in 2009.-

I have seen this Bakwas film then and regretted very much for having wasted my time.
This song is pictured on the lead pair, when Feroze (a final year medical student) is wooing the daughter of the watchman of the Dak Bungalow, namely Shanti( Tanuja).

Dr. Satish travels from the big city to a small village, where he can serve the poor who cannot afford to go to the city for medical treatment. Once in the village, he meets Shanti, who lives with her dad, Radhekiran (Shivraj), a watchman. Both Shanti and Satish fall in love; exchange vows to be married. Radhekiran has an accident, and dies, leaving Shanti to re-locate, without notifying Satish. Satish is devastated at losing Shanti, and tries to locate her, to no avail. His parents want him to marry Kamini(Sulochna Chatterjee), and he agrees to do so. It is then he comes across Shanti, and he is shocked to see that Shanti has given birth to baby-boy, but will not disclose who the father is….. aage parde pe dekhiye

Now after 40 years, I do not recall having seen the film or hearing this song at that time. So it is an endorsement of above views that it was a non-descript film.
However, it is a good song all the same irrespective of the merit or exact date of its picturisation.
Thanks, Sudhir ji.
Regards,
Avadh Lal
