‘Kunwaari’ (1966) was produced by R N Mandloi and was directed by S N Tripathi. The main cast consisted of Indrani Mukherjee, Tabassum, Ravindra Kapoor, Prem Chopra supported by Murad, Shammi, Sundar, Tun Tun, Leela Mishra, Mridula, S N Tripathi, Jeewan, Mumtaz Begum, Khursheed, Raj Kishore, Sheela Kashmiri, Helen, Chandabai, Ameeta, Radheshyam, Anwari, Munshi Munakka etc.

As of now, ‘Kunwaari’ (1966) is not available for viewing on video sharing platforms. However, the video clips of all songs are available, which indicates that the video tapes of the film may be available privately. I came across the first 8 minutes of the film on a video sharing platform giving some idea of the film’s story. I also got the synopsis of the story on the description box of the video clip of the songs which appears to have been reproduced from the film’s press booklet. I have also watched videos of all the nine songs. Based on these inputs, I have written the gist of the film’s story except the end part of the story as under:

Retired Colonel Dubey (Murad) stays in London with his daughters, Chhaaya (Indrani Mukherjee) and Chandni (Tabassum) who have been brought up and educated in England. So, both the daughters are only familiar with the English way of life and culture. With the passing of Land Reforms Laws by Government of India under which the ‘tillers of the soil’ become the owner of the agricultural land, Colonel Dubey had to return in India with his daughters to look after their large landed property personally. Prakash (Ravindra Kapoor) a post-graduate is employed by Colonel Dubey as a tutor of Indian culture, history and traditions for his two daughters. Prakash and Chhaaya falls in love. Chandni is happy about their romantic relationship.

However, Colonel Dubey arranges for the engagement of Chhaaya with someone else for which Chhaaya is not happy. She runs away with Prakash and gets married. Unfortunately, on the wedding night, Prakash dies of a snake bite. Before his death, Prakash tells Chhaaya that he is leaving her forever not as his widow but as a ‘kunwaari’ (unmarried, virgin). Thereafter, Chhaaya lives in a village house and starts working for village upliftment. But the villagers are not happy with her image of a foreign-returned mem sahib. She is declared by the villagers as a woman of bad character and is forced to leave the village.

Chhaaya moves to Banaras and starts serving in a women’s old-age home as a Sarvodaya worker. She also joins a college to continue her higher education. In the college, she meets Timir (Prem Chopra) who gradually finds himself falling in love with Chhaaya. But Timir’s mother wants him to marry Chhaaya’s younger sister, Chandni. When Chhaaya learns about this, she runs away to facilitate Timir and Chandni to get married. Will Chhaaya remain ‘kunwaari’ throughout her life or something will get worked out to give the story a happy ending?

The film had nine songs including one song in male and female versions, written by Shailendra (7) and B D Mishra (2) which were set to music by S N Tripathi. Six songs have been covered on the Blog. I present the 7th song, ‘jhan jhan jhan baaje….kaisee madhur madhur paaon mein paijaniyaa’ written by B D Mishra and rendered by Asha Bhosle who sings for Indrani Mukherjee. This is a dance song being performed by Helen.

The context of the song appears to be a college’s cultural programme where Prem Chopra and Indrani Mukherjee are studying. I get a clue from the beginning of the song when Prem Chopra is very briefly seen with Helen who has just completed her dance performance. With this clue and also the fact that the background on the stage is the same on both the songs, I strongly feel that the song on which Helen has completed her dance performance in western style is paaon mein painjaniyaan naache sajaniyaa after which Indrani Mukherjee immediately starts singing the song under discussion. Helen is surprised but she joins her a bit later for her classical dance performance on the song being rendered by Indrani Mukherjee, after changing her costume. So, the song situation is the tandem dance songs.
