Today’s song is from an obscure film – Char minar-1956. Though the 50s decade was known for entertaining, Mythological and musical films, there were also plenty of ordinary films, lacking in content, star power and good music. Such films just came and went without leaving any trace. But these lacklustre films actually gave enhanced importance to memorable films.

Char Minar-56 was a Nagina film presentation (which was owned by Ravindra Dave, the Director of Nageena-51. After this film’s tremendous success he opted for its name for his company). The film was produced and directed by Ravindra Dave. Not only that, the assistant director was Narendra Dave, Assistant Photographers were Pratap Dave and Arvind Dave, Assistant Editor was Balwant Dave and the production manager was Surendra Dave. It looked like an employment exchange for Dave’s family !

Director Ravindra Dave was born in Karachi on 16-4-1919. After graduation, he joined Dalsukh Pancholi’s distribution empire as a Manager. Pancholi was his Mama (Maternal Uncle). It was here that he learnt the art of Editing from Shaukat Hussein (husband of Noorjehan). He wrote Screenplays for Pancholi’s films, till 1941. In 1943, he got his first break as a joint director with Vishnu Pancholi( Dalsukh Pancholi’s brother) for the film “Poonji”-43. Then there was no looking back for him.

After Partition he came to Bombay with Pancholi. His first film here Nageena, with Nutan, was a Hit film. Ravindra Dave directed 30 Hindi films. Some of his films were,Nageena-52, Agra Road-57, Post Box 999-58, Guest house and Satta bazar-59, Raaz-67. His last Hindi film was Road to Sikkim-69. He also wrote the story and screenplay of Saajan-69, made by Mohan Saigal.

He used as many as 19 music directors in his 30 Hindi films. He was able to work with major stars like Nutan, Nalini Jaywant, Raagini, Veena, Suraiya,Meena Kumari, Meena Shorey, Nargis, Shakila, Mala Sinha, Sadhana, Babita etc etc. As forn male actors he worked with Raj Kapoor, Rajesh Khanna, Shyam, Sunil Dutt, Al Nasir, Vijay Anand, Balraj Sahni, Nasir Khan. It was during the shooting of his film Post Box No.999-1958 that Sunil Dutt married Nargis secretly and came back for shooting, without anyone knowing it. ( Just like Dev Anand married Kalpana Kartik, during Shootings.). He helped and encouraged newcomers like Sunil Dutt, Rajesh Khanna,Vijay Anand, Subi Raj, Kalyanji-Anand ji, Anju Mahendru etc.

He handled mainly Mystery/crime stories during the 50s decade, because that was the trend at that time.

After 1969, he was almost jobless. He was advised to make Gujarati movies.

From 1971, he turned to Gujarati films with Jasal Toral-71 and he directed some 26 Gujarati films. His period in Gujarati cinema is considered as the Golden Era for Gujarati films. He liked to work with known artists generally. In 16 films out of his 26 Gujarati films, the Hero was Upendra Trivedi. Avinash Vyas was the music director in 17 of these movies.

He had married Jasumati Ben. He had 2 sons and 4 daughters. He died in Bombay on 21-7-1992.( Thanks to Harish Raghuwanshi ji for a Gujarati article on Ravindra Dave)

The Music director was Sardul Kwatra. His younger brother Bhagwant Kwatra was his assistant. The cast of the film was Nasir khan (brother of Dilip kumar), Jabin Jalil, Bhagwan, Nazi, Altaf,Anjali devi (not the one from the South), S.K.Prem, Helen and many others.

In our life, we come across many strange things. There are many occasions when we feel disappointed when we don’t find or get what we had expected. This also teaches us not to get misled by external appearances. There are occasions when we find that our neighbour named Shanti Lal is a loud mouth and very quarrelsome person or visit a hotel called Sheraton, only to find that it is the dirtiest and a third grade joint inside !

In the case of a person, at least it is understandable, because no one knows how the child will grow up. I knew one Rikshawala in Hyderabad whose name was Nizam. But when the name of a film is misleading, you not only get disappointed but feel cheated as well !

Film Char Minar-56 was one such example. When this film came to Hyderabad in 1956, everybody in the city was elated thinking that the film was made on the city’s landmark-Char Minar, like Taj Mahal of Agra. The first lot of viewers made a hue and cry in the town that the film had nothing to do with Hyderabad’s pride structure-Char Minar ! The local papers too warned the readers not to get misled by the name of the film.

Unfortunately, I and some of my friends were among the first lot in the audience and we naturally came out thoroughly disappointed. If the producer/director of the film- Ravindra Dave was present there, I doubt very much if he could have gone back to Bombay in one piece !

Char Minar is the name of a way side Inn, on the way to Madina, in the film. It is here that the Hero gets separated from his family in his childhood. The film was a fantasy costume film- most unlike the other films that Ravindra Dave was known for in that period.

The heroine of this film was Jabin Jalil. Not much is written about this capable actress. She was a short short petite but attractive actress. She was born on 1st April 1936 in Delhi, but was educated in Japan and Bombay, as her father was in foreign services of India. She used to take part in college dramas and in one such drama the judges were Nigar Sultana and her director husband S.M.Yusuf. They offered her a film as a Heroine. Jabeen’s father had expired and only mother and younger brother were there. She accepted the offer. Her first film was Guzara in 1954. Her second film in 55 was Lutera. Her first hero was Karan Dewan and second was Nasir khan.

She became famous in New Delhi-56, in the role of Kishore’s sister Nikki’s role. She acted in 29 films, out of which 5 were unreleased. She also acted in 4 Punjabi films. She got a National award in 1962 for a Punjabi film in which her Hero was Prem Chopra.

She was a popular actress of Hindi cinema of the 50s & 60s. Although She acted in merely 29 Hindi ( 5 films were unreleased) & 4 Punjabi films in her almost 20 years career. She made millions fans of her beauty and wonderful acting. She is an Indian Film Actress & Film Producer who is well known for her work in Bollywood films. She has worked with top Bollywood stars like Shashi Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor, Kishore Kumar, Dev Anand & Pradeep Kumar during 1955 to 1965.

Jabeen made her film debut with Guzaara (1954) where her hero was Karan Dewan. Her second film was Lutera (1955) where her hero was Nasir Khan. She however got true recognition with her third film, New Delhi (1956) where she played the role of Kishore Kumar’s sister Nikki. She got benefitted by the success of New Delhi. In the late 1950s, many films starring her released, including Char Minar, Fashion, Jeevan Sathi, Hathkadi, Panchayat, Raagini, Bedard Zamana Kya Jaane and Raat ke Raahi. In the 60s, Jabeen acted in films like Batwara, Khiladi, Sachche Moti, Taj Mahal and Raju. The Batwara song “Yeh Raat Yeh Fizaayen Phir Aayen Na Aayen” picturised on her and Jawahar Kaul is popular to this day. She also got the National Award for the 1962 Punjabi film Chaudhary Karnail Singh in which her hero was Prem Chopra. Jabeen acted in three other Punjabi movies Kadi Dhoop Kadi Chhaon, Geet Baharaan De & Aye Dharti Punjab Di.

Many songs picturised on her were extremely popular including ‘Tum Aur Hum…’ (Fashion), ‘Madbhari Yeh Pyaar Ki Palken…’ (Fashion), ‘Ta Thaiyya Karte Ana…’ (Panchayat), ‘Piya mai hoon patang tu dor…’ (Raagini), ‘Qaid mein Hai Bulbul Sayyad Muskuraye…’ (Bedard Zamana Kya Jaane), ‘Door Kahin Tu Chal…’
(Bedard Zamana Kya Jaane), ‘Aa Bhi Ja Bewafa…’ (Raat Ke Rahi), ‘Tu Kya Samjhe Tu Kya Jaane…’ (Raat Ke Rahi) and ‘Ek Nazar Ek Ada…’ (Raat Ke Rahi).

Jabeen Jalil quit films in 1974 after wrapping up her career with the film Vachan. In 2008 she had produced a movie “Pehli Nazar Ka Pyaar”.

Jabeen got married in the year 1968. Her Husband Ashok Kak is of Kashmiri Origin & hailed from Jodhpur. He was President of the Kodak Company and was the youngest CEO of that time. After moving away from films Jabeen was active in social work also.

Jabeen and her family stayed in America for 10 years. The family moved back to Mumbai in 1998. She lives with her husband, son and elderly mother-in-law in her flat in South Bombay and divides her time between playing the devoted wife and the ideal mother. Her son Divvij Kak is also an actor and Jabeen became a producer with Jabeen International.
She lives in Dadar, Mumbai nowadays.

The Hero of today’s film was Nasir Khan. He was neither good looking nor a good actor. His only plus point was that he was Dilip Kumar’s brother.

Nasir Khan ( born on 1-10- 1924) will always be remembered as the leading man of Pakistan’s maiden production Teri Yaad (1948). Nasir Khan started his career in 1945 with Filmistan’s Mazdoor(1945). His next film Shehnai (1947) opposite Rehana was a hit and is still remembered for C. Ramchandra’s songs especially Mar katari mar jana (sung by Amirbai Karnataki) and Aana meri jaan meri jaan Sunday kai Sunday (sung by C. Ramchandra, Shamshad Begum and Meena Kapoor).

He shifted to Lahore at the time of partition and appeared in two Pakistani films i.e. Teri Yaad (1948) and Shahida (1949). Teri Yaad with Asha Posley was Pakistan’s first released film. It flopped because it was lacking in production quality and that along with Jinnah’s death soon after contributed to its failure.

Deewan Sardari Lal’s Shahida, Nasir Khan’s second Pakistani film in which he starred with Shamim, best remembered for her role in Kishore Sahu’s family drama Sindoor also failed to click. Disheartened, Nasir found it hard to support himself and sought help from his brother Yusuf Khan, alias Dilip Kumar, the emerging matinee idol of Indian cinema. Under the banner of Best Pictures, Nasir Khan distributed four films from Bombay to Pakistan, including Mela, a Nargis-Dilip blockbuster by filmmaker S.U. Sunny, featuring some of Naushad’s most enchanting musical compositions.

Overwhelmed by his sudden wealth Nasir then became involved in a love affair with a girl belonging to a feudal Punjabi family. As a result of this imbroglio he had to leave the country of Pakistan overnight ( in view of a threat to his life), that too stealthily only with whatever clothes he had on his body. He returned to Bombay, but not before having his name recorded in the history of Pakistani cinema as the hero of its maiden film.

After returning to India, Nasir resumed his career in 1951 and appeared in 6 Hindi films including Khazana, Nagina, Nakhare, Nazneen, Phoolon Ke Haar and Saudagar. Of these special mention must be made of Nagina, a mystery-thriller where he appeared opposite Nutan. Nagina was issued an Adults only certificate and is still remembered for its haunting melodies sung by C.H. Atma and Lata Mangeshkar.

Later, Nasir Khan appeared with many top Indian heroines including Suraiya (Lal Kunwar), Nargis (Angarey), Meena Kumari (Daera) and made somewhat successful team with Nutan (Nagina, Aagosh and Shisham), but he never achieved the success his brother Dilip Kumar did because of his limited acting abilities and wooden expressions.

He married the sensual Indian beauty and his co-star in 3 films i.e. Begum Para. Nasir Khan’s most memorable film was perhaps the hugely successful Ganga Jamuna (1961) where he was cast opposite his own brother Dilip Kumar. The film was a story of two brothers on opposite sides of the law, Ganga (Dilip Kumar) and Jamuna (Nasir Khan). Nasir Khan acted in 30 films. His first film was Mazdoor-45 and the last film was Bairag-76. When films stopped coming to him, he shifted to Deolali, near Nashik and started farming and poultry also, but failed miserably.

According to his wife Begum Para, Nasir developed a physical condition, where he began to lose all his hair and eyebrows prematurely. He really lost out on his career because of that. During the making of Ganga Jamuna, he wore a wig and got away with it. So he concentrated all his efforts on making films.

He died on 3rd May, 1974. His last film Bairaag (1976) was released after his death.

Here is a song sung by Asha Bhosale, from this film. Enjoy….
