We know that S D Burman sang about 150 Bengali NFSs in the beginning of his career. Most of them became very popular. In Hindi, the number is about 25. We have 5 of them on the blog.
Today on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, here is a lesser known SDB song. I couldn’t get much detail. Looks like it must have been recorded in the year 1948, in the days following Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination. However some sources on internet mention the year as 1960 for this. Also this seems to be album containing more songs and titled as ‘Gun Dhaam Hamaare Gandhi jee’. I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this song and its details please.

Raja Mehdi Ali Khan joined the Hindi film industry sometime around mid 1940s as a dialogue writer. His first film as a lyricist was Filmistan’s ‘Do Bhai’ (1947) in which he teamed up with S D Burman and wrote lyrics for all the songs. His next two films as a lyricist with S D Burman were ‘Vidya’ (1948) and ‘Kamal Ke Phool’ (1949). Surprisingly after 1949, Raja Mehdi Ali Khan had no opportunity to team up with S D Burman again. His association with Madan Mohan started in the film ‘Aankhen’ (1950) which continued till 1967 in 12 Hindi films.

There are singing voices. Then there are voices that sing. And then there is SD Burman – affectionately Sachin Da, or just plain Dada, to most people in the industry, a voice that stands apart from everyone else.

Most of the people other than the die hard connoisseurs of filmy and non-filmy music, may not be aware that Sachin Dev Burman (S D Burman) started his musical career as a singer on All India Radio Calcutta (Kolkatta) in early 30s. During his early period of musical journey, he had sung many Bengali non-filmy songs some of them written by such distinguished personalities like Jasimuddin and Kazi Nazrul Islam. I was pleasantly surprised to know that he had also rendered Hindustani classical thumris like preet mein huye badnaam in concerts at Allahabad and Calcutta.
