Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Udd gaya bhanwra kali udaas

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

There are singing voices. Then there are voices that sing. And then there is SD Burman – affectionately Sachin Da, or just plain Dada, to most people in the industry, a voice that stands apart from everyone else.

The Hindi songs sung by him both for films and non-film, may be possible to be compiled in a small collection on two or three LPs or CDs. But the sound of the songs that he has sung, haunts the mind forever, having heard him just once. The association of Sachin Da with films way back to the late 1920s. Born in 1906, Sachin Da had come to Calcutta, by 1929. The first documented information about his career is that he composed music for a silent Bangla film ‘Raajgi’, released in 1930. The details about his early career are sketchy. It is stated that, in 1933, he recorded some songs in the film ‘Yahudi Ki Ladki’ under the baton of Pankaj Mullick. This film was from New Theatres, with KL Saigal and Ratanbai in lead roles. But later, the songs sung by him were re-recorded in the voice of Pahadi Sanyal, and used in the film. There is no trace of recordings made in Sachin Da’s voice. Then in 1934, he recorded some songs for the film ‘Seeta’ produced by the East India Film Co., under the music direction of KC Dey. Once again, these recordings are not yet available.

Sachin Da stayed in Calcutta till 1939, active as a music director for Bangla films and a singer of non film Hindi and Bangla songs on the radio. He participated in the famed music conference, the ‘Allahbad Sangeet Sammelan’ in 1935. In 1939, he came to Bombay, like many other stalwarts of the Calcutta film industry. But it would be many years before he was able to find meaningful assignments for himself. The real starting point came in 1946. Staying close to KL Saigal, KN Singh and Manna Dey in Bombay, he would sing at private get togethers with friends. And then on their suggestion, the song “Dheere Se Jaana Bagiyan Mein” was recorded, and found immense success with the listening public. And in 1946, he got two assignments as a music director with the production house of Filmistan. The first film was ‘Shikari’ and the second film was ‘Eight Days’.

Sachin Da continued to sing an occasional song in his films. Outside of that, his repertoire of non-film songs is not very large, but as can be expected, it is very impressive. This particular song is written by Raja Mehdi Ali Khan. The music composition and the rendering is by Sachin Da himself. A very touching song of separation. The flower bud pines for the bhanwara (moth), that had loved her, but now is gone. The emotions written down by the poet tug at the heart. Remarkable lyrics, a soft and underplayed melody and a soulful rendering – a gem of a song, a keepsake.

udd gayaa bhanwaraa
kali udaas

The flower is sad, pensive
For its lover has left and gone

kyun bhaunre ne preet lagaai
kaahe chhod gayaa harjaai
abhi bujhi na thi mann ki pyaas

O why did he express his love to me
And why now, the heartless one has left
The yearning in the heart is not fulfilled yet

daal galey mein sundar baahen
bhonk gaye dil mein nigaahen
chhod gaye mujhe gham ke paas

In his lovely arms
He had embraced me
And left my heart wounded
Pricked by his piercing glances
And has now left me alone with my sorrows

bujh gayaa deepak jalte jalte
ruk gayi naiyyaa chalte chalte
ro ro pukaare kisi ko paas

The glow in my heart is snuffed out
The raft of my dreams is still, unmoving
In tears, I call out for him to be near

basne se pehle ujad gayi main
mil ke piya se bichhad gayi main
bichhde jaise phool se baas

The world of my hopes
Is razed, even before being
And I am left alone
After having known his love
Separated
Like the fragrance from the flower

Thanks Sudhir ji for this beautiful post !

-i had also sent the same lyrics on 28.10.12 to Atul ji to remember Dada on his death anniversary ! i will put here what i mention therewith “Speciality of this song is the ‘bhromor’. Of Sachin Da’s bhanwaraa songs even there is an write up and information available on the net. He has already given us ‘dheere se jana bagiyan mein re bhanwaraa’, then ‘gun guna rahe bhanwar’, then ‘dil ka bhanwar kare pukar’, and there is already ‘bhromor’ songs of Sachin Da in Bengali like – ‘phuler boney thaak bhromor’ .There may be more which we have to find.”

– One more NFS penned by Raja Mehdi Ali Khan and sung by SACHIN DA ‘ prem ka pinjara ho gaya soona , mann ka panchhi chhut gaya ‘ is balance to be posted, which also is very very beautiful… ‘ aa jaa , o bichchde saathi aa ja , kaahe hamse rooth gaya … ‘
