Two years, really. Life is so incessant, and so mindless in its pursuit of time. Riding on this train of time, it does not allow any halt or a breather. You are on it, and then one day you are not on it. That’s just it, the train continues to roll. The journey is dotted with countless interchanges, and so many wonderful people that we have known, have left this train, to take on a different journey. We know, we will never see them again. Although the past is always behind us and we can never ever get there. Still it continues to live in our minds. People will leave, never to return. But the memories – they are forever.

Shammi Kapoor found his true identity in Hindi movies with “Tumsa Nahin Dekha” (1956). Prior to this movie, he was an underconfident struggling actor who played second fiddle to the leading ladies opposite him. Most movies (if not all) featuring Shammi Kapoor in the lead fared poorly at the box office.

Normally it is believed that O P Nayyar composed music for only two Shammi Kapoor movies, viz. “Tumsa Nahin Dekha” (1957) and “Kashmir Ki Kali”(1964). But that is not correct. O P Nayyar also composed the music of “Mujrim” (1958). This was an Eagle Films Production. It was produced by F C Mehra and directed by O P Ralhan. The movie had Shammi Kapoor, Ragini, Shubha Khote, Kamal Kapoor, S. N. Banerjee, Tun Tun, Mumtaz Begum, Amrit Rana, Abdul, Agha Miraz, Ratan Gaurang, Sood, Johnny Walker, Geeta Bali, Murad, Ramesh Thakur, Padmini etc in it.

Shammi Kapoor had acted in over a dozen films as a lead actor in early 50s, most of which flopped at the box office. Chor Bazaar (1954) was one film. It was produced under the banner of All India Pictures and it was directed by P N Arora. The star cast included Shammi Kapoor, Sumitra Devi, Chitra, Om Prakash, Kammo, Amir, Cuckoo. Parshuram etc with a guest appearance by Wasti. This film had six songs all written by Shakeel Badayuni and set to music by Sardar Malik. I remembered the name of this film only because of an immortal song “huyi ye hamse naadaani teri mehefil mein aa baithhe” from this film which I had heard on my younger days on radio. Recently, I had seen this film on the VCD that I have with me. As usual with almost all VCDs of old films, the film lacks continuity in some places because of lots of cuts. I did not find one song ” Har dar ki thokerein hain” sung by Lata Mangeshkar in the VCD.

When one thinks of a bolt of lightning, it recreates in the mind the crackling sound of particles in the air subjected to currents of extremely high voltage, streaks of very very bright light zig-zagging across the sky, the rumbling sounds of thunder that follow the flash of light in a matter of few seconds. People who have witnessed bolts of lightning at very close quarters recount the intensity of both the sound and the flash of light. Sound of the crackling air, the sound of thunder, the blinding flash, and the rush of moving air at very close quarters. Whether from a distance, or a close quarters, this display of light and sound and movement is a gripping experience, for those who have an appetite for it.
