Today’s song is from the film Nazaare-1949.

It was a film made in the Cine Factory of Ranjit Movietone. It was called a ‘Cine Factory’ because, on all the 8 shooting floors of its studio, continuous shootings went on. Not only their own films, but outside producers also took the floors on rent and made their films. All materials like cameras, helpers, editing and sound facilities, mini theatre and all that was required to make a film was available in Ranjit, including actors, actresses, Lyricists, Music Directors, Directors and what not !

Today (12 November 2023) is “Deepaawali”, the festival of lights.

In some of my earlier posts discussing Deepawali, I have opined that Indians are not performing Laxmi Puja the right way and that is why we are not being adequately blessed by Goddess Laxmi. In those posts, I alluded to our habits (passed down to us over generations) that was keeping us poor.

Today’s song is from the film Gauna-1950.

Some of the readers may wonder about this title. The meaning of this word may not be known to readers from Non-Hindi states. Google defines it as….

” Gauna is a North Indian Hindu custom and the ceremony associated with the consummation of marriage is prevalent in the states of Bihar, U.P. and Rajasthan. It is associated with the custom of Child Marriage. The ceremony takes place several years after marriage.”

Hindus all over India have this custom in almost every state, but with a different name in every language. Of course now that the child marriage is illegal by law, this custom is out of date. However it is still performed immediately after all marriage rituals even these days in every Hindu marriage performed traditionally. These days the Bride and the Groom are quite matured at marriage time – mostly in their mid 20’s or even late 20’s. They already know everything about ‘everything’ and the custom is followed only symbolically most times.

Today’s song is from dubbed Tamil film, titled ” Manohar” in Hindi, in 1954.

After the mind boggling and the most unexpected success of the film Chandralekha-1948 from Gemini Studios, owned by S.S.Vasan, the Southern film industry was shaken. They never imagined that the Hindi belt could be tapped for additional business. The southern film stars, who always harboured a hidden desire to gain name, fame and the consequent money from the Hindi belt which occupied almost 75 to 80 % of All India market, also saw their opportunities in this.

Stories of Arabian Nights or 1001 Nights are so interesting that for many generations they have been a source of entertainment.Alibaba,Allauddin and Sindbad are the evergreen stories. Today’s song is from the film ‘Samaj Ko Badal Dalo’ (1947).

1947 was an year when it was known to everyone in India that their country is going to be divided on the basis of religion and a new entity – Pakistan will be carved out of this nation. The people had no choice and this was accepted by everyone as inevitable. What next? This question was solved partly, unknown to the common man, by the Hindi film makers. In the few succeeding years many films were made on the Independence struggle as well as films stressing the need to revive and consolidate the social structure of India by strengthening the joint family tradition, raising voice against the unjust and antisocial customs and the need to honor the elders of the family.
