“Anand Math” (1952) is a novel written by Bankimchandra Chattopadhyay which was first published in 1882. This novel served as a major source of inspiration for Indian freedom fighters against the British rulers. The British rulers banned this novel and this ban was lifted only after India gained independence. “Vandematram”, a song contained in the novel became Indian’s national song.

By now I am coming round to the view that obscure B grade movies could well outnumber the well known A grade movies as far as old Hindi movies are concerned. Music of such movies could well turn out to be a treasure trove that has not yet been fully discovered. I continue to find one gem after another when I look for songs from such forgotten movies.

“Nirmal” (1952) is a movie that I knew nothing about. This obscure movie was produded by Shankar Theatre and directed by S Upendra. the star cast of the movie included Amarnath, Shanta Kanwar, Purnima, Shyam Kumar, Mirza Musharaf, Habib, Cuckoo etc.

Zalzalaa (1952), is film produced under the banner of Art Films of Asia Ltd. It is produced and directed by Paul Zils. Paul was a German filmmaker who made India his home for more than two decades from mid 40s to the 60s. He is credited with the rejuvenation of India’s documentary film movement, after the departure of the British in 1947, and a prime moving force behind the Films Division of govt. of India (which was known as Information Films of India under the British regime).

Pankaj Babu’s last association with Hindi film world was in 1954. After the film Kasturi, in 1954 he did not work for any more Hindi films. His association with the Bengali cinema lasted for some more years, till 1972, beyond which he was content with the peace, and with teaching music. The Padam Shri award for this remarkable musician came in 1970, followed in 1972 by Dada Saheb Phalke award for lifetime contribution to Indian Cinema.
