Aji aisa mauka phir kahaan milega

Though we have discussed lots and lots of songs picturised on Shammi Kapoor, there are still songs that have yet to make it to the blog. Today (14th august 2012) is the first death anniversary of Shammi Kapoor. This offers us an opportunity to pay our tribute to Shammi Kapoor by discussing a few songs picturised on him.

I have posted several songs from “An Evening in Paris” (1967). Here is a lesser known song from this movie, at least as far as I am concerned. I was not aware of this song till a few hours ago, and I became aware of this song only when I was looking at the list of old farmaishes given by my readers.

It was in 1960s that Indians were first treated to views of countries outside India and the Indian audiences were left gasping at the sight of the world, viz Japan, Europe etc and the progress that they had made vis a vis India left a lasting mpression in Indian minds, not that it led to any progress or introspection among Indians. They were just happy to enjoy these foreign locales on the movie screens.

Deewaane ka naam to poocho

One fine day, I will count all the Rafi songs that he sang for Shammi Kapoor and find out how many such songs were there in all. There just seems to be so many of them. And all of them are so wonderful to listen to. Listening to these songs is a perfect recipe to cheer oneself up.

It is an incredibly romantic and sensuous song. And all this effect is created thanks to the voices of Asha Bhonsle and Rafi. And the lyrics by Shailendra are incredibly imaginative. Shankar Jaikishan’s music is awesome of course.

Akele akele kahaan jaa rahe ho

Shammi Kapoor, who started his career with a whimper in 1950s, began to create waves in 1960s, beginning with “kashmir Ki kali”, and ever since, all his subsequent movies saw him playing similar roles in movies with similar story lines.
One common thread in all these movies used to be lilting music, typically sung by Rafi with gusto.
