Today’s song is from an 84 year old film Charnon ki Dasi-1941.

1941 was the first year in the second decade of the Talkie Era and it was the beginning of the emergence of a New film industry. When Talkie started in 1931, for many years after that, the films were made by the people who had done work in the Silent films. These films had a spill over for the silent era artistes. Once the films started talking, most silent artists who could not speak Hindi or Urdu automatically disappeared. Thus started the influx of new actors who could speak Hindi and sing songs, in whatever way they could. Intelligent directors like V Shantaram,Bhavnani, Sohrab Modi, Chandulal Shah, Himanshu Rai, B N Sircar, L V Prasad and a host of Gujarati directors understood that the Talkie needs a different treatment than silent films. Music directors from stage dramas tried their hand in composing film music.

Today’s song is from an 88 year old film- Premveer-1937. It was made by Huns Pictures, Kolhapur by the owner, producer and the director of this film – Master Vinayak.

It was just 6 years ago that India had entered the Talkie film era, with Alam Ara-1931. Initially films were based on Mythology, folk stories and historical figures. Soon the talented filmmakers like V.Shantaram, Master Vinayak, Baburao Painter, Sohrab Modi, Himanshu Rai, B.C.Sircar, S.S.Vasan and others realised that the Talkie films have to be handled differently that the Silent films. Being a novelty, the moving pictures or the Silent films were in a sellers’ market – which meant that whatever was produced was sold. But now that the films had started talking, story content, music, acting, direction and the themes needed to be accepted by the audience. This meant that new filmmakers were in Buyers’ market and they needed to make what had a demand from the audience.

Today’s song is from a family drama social film- Ghar ki Laaj-1941.

The film was produced and directed by V.M.Vyas, for his own banner- Sunshine Pictures, Bombay. The music was by an old-timer, Annasaheb Mainkar, but I find that in this film, he tried to adapt to the changing styles of the film music of the times !. The cast of the film was Shanta Hublikar, Nazir Ahmed, Jagdish Sethi ( in the credits, his B.A. is written prominently), Kalyani, Kaushalya, Majid, Daya devi (mother of actress Kaushalya, in real life), Hadi etc.

The era of silent films in India started in 1913, when 2 films were made-Raja Harishchandra and Mohini Bhasmasur. One would think that this must have started a spate of Silent films, but surprisingly, in 1914, 1915 and 1916 only 1 Silent Film each was produced. From 1916 it started with 5 films till 1931, when the age of Talkies arrived with Alam Ara.
