Today’s song is a duet by Rafi and Chitalkar from the social comedy film Hangama-1952.
This is my 1300th post on this Blog. Is it for real ? It is too difficult for me to accept that I have written 1300 posts on old film songs. How did it happen ? If someone had predicted, when I was 71 year old, that I would write a New Chapter in my life and achieve few Milestones, that my name will be known to many people all over India and other countries, and that I will even write a couple of books…. and all this on old films and its music, I would have laughed aloud for a long time ! But it did happen !!

Today’s song is from the Stunt film Bhedi Bangla-1949.
The tradition of making stunt/action films is as old as the birth of Silent films. During the silent era, due to the lack of sound -dialogues or music – the visuals had all the importance. The effect of forceful dialogues had to be put in visuals, which is extremely difficult. Imagine the famous scene of film Deewar-1975 (mere paas ‘Maa’ hai) without the superb voice modulation of the dialogue. Would it give the same effect on the audience ? Certainly not !. So, the best way was to give visuals which are self explanatory. A man hitting a blow to another man does not require dialogue or superb histrionics !

Today’s song is from the film Sipahiya-1949.
When India got independence in 1947 and the British Rule ended, the Indian public breathed a sigh of relief. Especially, the film industry felt like coming out of a prison. During British rule, there were so many restrictions, specially during the war period, on the filmmaking – like, you can’t show the British in bad light, you can’t speak about Independence openly, you can’t criticise Government policies etc etc. Even the wordings of songs and dialogues were under a sharp lens. The best example of this oppression was the song in the film ” Kismet”-1943, ‘Aaj Himalay ki choti se ‘ written by Kavi Pradeep. He had to go underground to avoid arrest for this song !

Today’s song is from the film Subah Ka Tara (1954).
Today’s song is a special song. Firstly, it is the last song of this film to appear here, thus making this film an “YIPPEE” film and secondly it is my 1234th post on this Blog ( it is a serial number 1-2-3-4, for those readers who need an explanation.).

Today’s song is from an obscure, neglected film 26th January-(1956).
India got Independence in 1947, but till 1950, we still had the British King as our Head of the country and all British laws and rules applied here. It was only on 26th January 1950 that we shed the title of ” a Dominion of the British Empire” and we became an Independent Republic. We had our own Head of the Government and our own laws and rules to follow. We had our president and Prime Minister and we were a Democratic Nation – no more a part of any kingdom anymore.
