Today (13 october) is the birth anniverasry of Ashok Kumar as well as the death anniversary of Kishore Kumar. After Kishore Kumar’s death on this day 25 years ago, Ashok Kumar stopped celebrating his birthday, naturally. On the occasion of Kishore Kumar’s birth anniversary on August 4th, the wheel of time(kalchakra) takes me back to my teens when I used to listen to Radio Ceylon’s programme on old Hindi film songs. On the first day of every month, the first song that was played on this programme was din hai suhaana aaj pahli taarikh hai from the film ‘Pahli Taarikh’ (1954). That was the time when I came to know about Kishore Kumar as a singer. It was a revelation to me later from the film ‘New Delhi’ (1956) that he was not only a singer but an actor also. With his many subsequent films in 50s and early 60s, I had taken it for granted that he was a comedian who sang mostly fun songs and that too for himself.

“Chalti Ka naam Gaadi” (1958) was a brainchild of Kishore Kumar. Legend has it that Kishore Kumar produced this movie to get over his tax problems. He wanted to produce a movie that he hoped would flop at the box office and that would enable him to balance his accounts for income tax purposes. He gave away the rights of this movie to his secretary Anoop Sharma who is credited as the Producer of this movie. The movie was directed by Satyen Bose and the movie included the three Ganguly brothers namely Ashok Kumar, Anoop Kumar and Kishore Kumar as well as the would be wife of Kishore Kumar namely Madhubala.

In Hindi movies, songs have traditionally played many roles. For one, songs are often the main reason why many people come to watch the movie. In one old movie, which had no songs in it, the maker had to actually explain it to the audience why that movie had no songs. And that explanation cut no ice with the public.
