Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Ek ladki bheegi bhaagi se

Posted on: November 10, 2011

“Chalti Ka naam Gaadi” (1958) was a brainchild of Kishore Kumar. Legend has it that Kishore Kumar produced this movie to get over his tax problems. He wanted to produce a movie that he hoped would flop at the box office and that would enable him to balance his accounts for income tax purposes. He gave away the rights of this movie to his secretary Anoop Sharma who is credited as the Producer of this movie. The movie was directed by Satyen Bose and the movie included the three Ganguly brothers namely Ashok Kumar, Anoop Kumar and Kishore Kumar as well as the would be wife of Kishore Kumar namely Madhubala.

This laugh riot, which Kishore Kumar hoped would turn the moviewatchers away, instead attracted movie wathers in droves. This movie went on to become one of the most loved comedy movies of all times. This is a movie which even younger generation, who otherwise scoff at the mention of old movies, can enjoy. My daughter, born forty years after the release of this movie discovered Kishore Kumar when I showed her a song of this movie and then she watched the entire movie on her own and enjoyed the movie to her heart’s content.

I do not know what was the song that I showed my daughter which converted her instantaneously into a Kishore Kumar fan. It could well be the song under discussion.

People may wonder how and why this song has managed to remain undiscussed so far in this blog. Well, this could be because of the human tendency to save the best for the future. Not just “Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi”, even “Aradhana”, to cite another movie has stayed under-represented in this blog for quite some time.

The situation of this song is quite well known to most movie watchers and music lovers. Madhubala, after attending a late night party, is going home when her car shuts down on the road. It is raining and she notices the board of an automobile repair garage that remains open round the clock. She comes out of the car, and walks to the garage, while getting drenched in torrential rain. Her persistent knocking at the garage shutter wakes Kishore Kumar up who is fast asleep inside. He opens the shutter, with a crowbar in hand, prepared to launch into an attack, if it turns out to be an unwanted person. But it is only a woman, so he lets her in. Madhubala takes him to task for sleeping on duty and threatens to report him to his boss. Kishore Kumar, not one to take things lying down, and not one to recognise a pretty girl when he sees one, turns against her and refuses to have to do anythimg to do with her. Then Madhubala climbs down from her high horse and tells him her plight. “I am a girl, and you should help me”. She pleads Kishore Kumar. Kishore Kumar is then suitably mollified and he agrees to look into her case. He goes towards her car taking Madhubala along and makes her push the car to the garage.

Once inside the garage, he inspects the car and begins the repair work. And he breaks into this song.

This song, deservingly a timeless classic, is a masterpiece in its attention to detail. Kishore Kumar working under the hood, while Madhubala trying to dry her body hugging wet sari is a sight for ages. The song (sung by Kishore Kumar), lyrics (by Majrooh Sultanpuri), and music (by S D Burman) combine to make it an audio visual experience of a lifetime.

Here is this fantastic song from “Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi” (1958) for the listening and watching pleasure of the readers.

Song-Ek ladki bheegi bhaagi si (Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi) (1958) Singer-Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-S D Burman

Lyrics

hmm
ek ladki bheegi-bhaagi si
soti raaton mein jaagi si
mili ek ajnabi se
koi aage na peechhe
tum hi kaho ye koi baat hai
hmm
ek ladki bheegi-bhaagi si
soti raaton mein jaagi si
mili ek ajnabi se
koi aage na peechhe
tum hi kaho ye koi baat hai
hmm

dil hi dil mein jali jaati hai
bigdi bigdi chali aati hai
dil hi dil mein jali jaati hai
bigdi bigdi chali aati hai
dhundhlaati huyi balkhaati huyi
saawan ki sooni raat mein
mili ek ajnabi se
koi aage na peechhe
tum hi kaho ye koi baat hai
hmm
ek ladki bheegi-bhaagi si
soti raaton mein jaagi si
mili ek ajnabi se
koi aage na peechhe
tum hi kaho ye koi baat hai
hmm

dagmag dagmag lahki lahki
bhooli bhatki bahki bahki
dagmag dagmag lahki lahki
bhooli bhatki bahki bahki
machli machli ghar se nikli
pagli si kaali raat mein
mili ek ajnabi se
koi aage na peechhe
tum hi kaho ye koi baat hai
hmm
ek ladki bheegi-bhaagi si
soti raaton mein jaagi si
mili ek ajnabi se
koi aage na peechhe
tum hi kaho ye koi baat hai
hmm

tan bheegaa hai sar geelaa hai
us kaa koi pench bhi dheelaa hai
tan bheegaa hai sar geelaa hai
us kaa koi pench bhi dheelaa hai
tanati jhukti
chalti rukti
nikli andheri raat mein
mili ek ajnabi se
koi aage na peechhe
tum hi kaho ye koi baat hai
hmm
ek ladki bheegi-bhaagi si
soti raaton mein jaagi si
mili ek ajnabi se
koi aage na peechhe
tum hi kaho ye koi baat hai
hmm

ek ladki bheegi-bhaagi si, soti raaton mein jaagi si
mili ek ajnabi se, koi aage na peechhe
tum hi kaho ye koi baat hai

A fair damsel, all drenched in rain and out of breath
Lo, she is awake in this sleeping night
All alone, none with her, she bumps into a stranger
Now tell me, isn’t that something !!!

dil hi dil mein jali jaati hai
bigdi bigdi chali aati hai
jhunjhlaati huyi balkhaati huyi
saawan ki sooni raat mein
mili ek ajnabi se, koi aage na peechhe
tum hi kaho ye koi baat hai

Simmering (in anger) silently within herself
Upset and offended, she bears down menacingly
Very distraught, and yet with graceful movements
In this forlorn night of rains
All alone, unescorted, she bumps into a stranger
Now tell me, isn’t that something !!!

dagmag dagmag lahki lahki
bhooli bhatki bahki bahki
machli machli ghar se nikli
pagli si kaali raat mein
mili ek ajnabi se, koi aage na peechhe
tum hi kaho ye koi baat hai

Wobbling in her walk
Sometimes light on her feet
Uncertain, as if she is lost
Tickled and impulsive, she left her home
In this black night of craziness
All alone, unescorted, she bumps into a stranger
Now tell me, isn’t that something !!!

tan bheegaa hai sar geelaa hai
us kaa koi pench bhi dheelaa hai
tanati jhukti, chalti rukti
nikli andheri raat mein
mili ek ajnabi se, koi aage na peechhe
tum hi kaho ye koi baat hai

She is drenching wet, and is also wet in the head
Apparently she has a wobbly screw (in her brain)
Stiff sometimes, stooping sometimes
Nervously walking and stopping
She is out (on the roads) in this night of darkness
All alone, unescorted, she bumps into a stranger
Now tell me, isn’t that something !!!

Really surprising that there is only one comment on this song. This used to be playing left right and center when we were growing up :). Madhubala… sigh!
