Greetings to Faryal on her birthday today (3rd November).

When she appeared on the film scene in 1965-66, the she was christened as the Sophia Loren of the Indian film industry. Considered to be one of the more daring cabaret dancers on screen, she actually expressed her extreme dislike for it, stating that primarily she is not a dancer, she never trained to be. Majrooh Sulatanpuri’s filmy career as a lyricist started with ‘Shah Jehan’ (1946) under the music direction of Naushad. In the same year, he also wrote lyrics for ‘Keemat’ (1946) for which Naushad was the music director. It was only after the success of ‘Andaz’ (1949) that Majrooh Sultanpuri got his foothold in Hindi film industry. Unfortunately, this success was short lived as he was arrested in 1949 for his anti-establishment poems. He was given an option of either to apologise or face two years of prison. He opted for the later. At the time of his arrest, he was writing lyrics for the film ‘Aarzoo’ (1950) and it was his first collaboration with the music director Anil Biswas. This film also became a hit and all the songs including the iconic song ae dil mujhe aisi jagah le chal became very popular.

My all-time favourite Lata-Kishore duet is from the Famina Production’s Fareb (1953) ” Aa, mohabbat ki basti basaayenge hum”, in which the duo are at their soulful best in expressing the pangs of separation of the two lovers, so poignantly captured in Majrooh Sultanpuri’s breath-taking imagery “dekh dharti se aakaash hai kitni door!”

Starting with Dil Deke Dekho in 1959, Usha Khanna has been active in the Hindi film industry as a music director for more than fifty years now, During the 90s and the first decade, her assignments have been few and far between, but she continues to work. As per current information, the film “Khandala House”, for which she has composed the music, is complete and is awaiting release in 2011.
