A few days back, I had discussed hamri munder boley kaaga sakhi ri from the film BAABLA (1953) on this blog. But well before this song, I had come across another song ‘lehron ke rele sang naiya mori khele’ from the same film sung by Hridaynath Mangeshkar. The voice sounded girlish. My first reaction was that it must have been some mistake on the part of uploader of the audio clip to name him as a singer of this song. My doubt stemmed from the fact that Hridaynath Mangeshkar was born on October 27, 1937. At the time of recording this song, he must be around 15 years by which time the voice of a boy should have turned in to a boyish or a male voice. So I kept this song in the loop for some time until I made fairly sure that this song was really sung by him.

Having stayed in Mumbai for over 60 years, I have a fair knowledge of Marathi but not as good as Hindi and English being my medium of instructions in school and college days respectively. In my younger days, I used to often listen to some non-filmy Marathi songs on the radio as also during some public functions like Ganesh festival. Of these, two Marathi songs which created interest in me to listen to more Marathi songs were “mee dolkar dolkar dolkar dariya cha raaja” ( I am a boatman, the king of sea) sung by Hemant Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar and “ne majsi ne matrabhumi laa, sagara praan talmal laa” (O sea, take me back to my motherland. My heart aches for her) sung by all the five Mangeshkars – Lata, Asha, Usha, Meena and Hridaynath. Both these songs were composed by Hridaynath Mangeshkar probably in the late 60s or early 70s. These two songs were my first introduction to Hridaynath Mangeshkar.

It is a beautiful song from a 1981 movie called Dhanwaan. Rajesh Khanna was making yet another gallant attempt to regain his lost position, Rakesh Roshan was making yet another attempt to revive an almost non existent career and Reena Roy was acting in yet another sensitive role ( unlike how she began her career).
