Tribute to Lata Mangeshkar – 2

Yaraa seeli seeli
birha ki raat ka jalnaa
dholaa seeli seeli
yeh bhi koyi jeenaa hai
yeh bhi koyi marnaa

O how slow is the night(lamp)
Burning to ambers, Oh love
Oh love, the slow burn
of the lonely lamp.
is this way of the living?
Or it is the way of the dead.

tooti hui choodiyon se
jodoon yeh kalaayi main ae
pichhli gali mein jaane
kya chhod aayi main
beetee huyi galiyon se ae
phir se guzarna yaraa

broken are they,
the bangles I try to adorn.
(They were whole once-my loved ones)
In the lane behind me,
What have I left behind.
(something in the previous life)
Those same lanes, call me,
I must pass by them again, love.

pairon mein na saaya koyi
sar pe na saayin re
mere saathh jaaye naa
meri parchhaayi re
baahar ujaalaa hai
andar veeraana

No one beside me, no shade (for feet).
No Lord(benevolent),
even to care for me.
No one goes with me,
not even my shadow.
All brightness is on the outside.
Inside it is all dark and desolate, my love.

In 1990, I was fascinated with this song. Not seen the song anywhere, only heard it on the radio. I don’t remember what else I knew about it, only that Dimple Kapadia was the actress, singing this on screen. I was working in a private firm’s office in Santacruz. There was this girl working there called ‘Heather’, who was looking to change jobs. She asked me to accompany her for interview somewhere at Bandra. In my turn, I also persuaded her to come with me to watch this movie at Liberty Cinema. After the interview, we reached the city and were late for the movie. It had already started, and ‘Heather tried to change my mind, about wasting the ticket money. But having gone so far, I was not in the mood to go back home without watching the movie. It was 3 to 3:30, almost 1 hour of the movie was over. We got the tickets and went inside the hall. In that red carpeted hall, it was as if we were alone in there. Soon interval came, and to our astonishment, there was no one to be seen. Heather said it is not safe to sit in there for us 2 girls and we should just get out. Finally, some I came to my senses we left the cinema.

That incident in 1991, and my ‘khwaahish’ to see this movie remained unfulfilled. Until a few years ago, when I again remembered this film and saw it on YouTube. Ah! What would we have done without YouTube. All the while I was listening to this song, and may have seen it somewhere on TV. Or found it on YouTube.

The awards list of this song is also impressive.
• 1991 – Filmfare Awards – Best Lyricist – Gulzar
• 1990 – National Film Awards – Best Female Playback Singer – Lata Mangeshkar
• 1990 – National Film Awards – Best Lyrics – Gulzar
Trivia:
This song was based on the Punjabi song “Ve Main Chori Chori” composed and sung by the Pakistani folk artist Reshma.
The folk flavour of this song, and the fresh analogies that Gulzar has made in lyrics of this song, made it very special. The super rendition by Lata Mangeshkar has also won her the National Award, yet again.

The following 3 songs are posted in the blog.

Song Date of posting
Main ek sadi se baithhi hoon 6 February 2022
Suniye jee araj mhaaro 26 October 2012
Surmayee shaam is tarah aaye (Lekin) 18 august 2022

This song is a significant one as the film music scene was just picking up, sufiana and Punjabi folk was gaining momentum. Here again, the relevance of Lata Mangeshkar, as a grand doyen of female playback singers, was established. She was singing for R. D. Burman, Laxminkant Pyarelal, of the old brigade and also for new breed of musician through the 90’s.

5213 Post No. : 17202 Movie Count :

Today 26th October 2022 is the eighty-fifth birth anniversary of (born on 26th October 1937) Music Director-Singer Hridaynath Mangeshkar.

When I noticed his birth anniversary yesterday, I sincerely wished that I should give a try to send a write-up with a song for this occasion to Atul ji.

We still have many movies to present a song from, where the music of these movies is composed by Hridaynath Mangeshkar. Out of all the movies with Hridaynath Mangeshkar as music director, So far only one movie ‘Dhawaan-1981’ has been ‘Yippeeee’ed’ on the blog.

The number of Hindi movies where music is composed by Hridaynath Mangeshkar is not much, but still he has given some timeless classics and unforgettable songs to Hindi movies.

Today morning, I was a little bit confused as which movie I should take a song from. First I decided to pick a song from the eighties and had almost finalized the movie ‘Suabh-1982’. But later, I remember that the today’s movie ‘Chaani’ is yet to make its debut on the blog. So, I am presenting a song from this movie ‘Chaani-1977’ today to grace the today’s occasion.

‘Chaani-1977’ was produced and directed by V. Shantaram.

It had actress Ranjana making her debut in Hindi movies, and also Master Sushant Ray making his debut. They were supported by Yashwant Dev, Prem Kumar, Gauri Kamat, Durga Senjit, Arvind Deshpande, Kamini, Suhas Bhalekar, Shankar, Vinita, Hemant, Jagannath, Kandalgaonkar, B. Majnalkar, Madhumati and Sagar (another debutant in the movie).

This movie was based on a novel written by C.T. Khanolkar, which was inspired by a true of story of a girl named ‘Chaani’.

‘Chaani-1977’ was passed by Censor Board on 22.03.1977. ( This movie was also made in Marathi).

Here is a brief mentioned about this movie , which I have taken from indiancine.ma and reproducing the text as it is …

‘Shantaram intended the film to be part of New Indian Cinema’s vanguard, adapting a difficult work from the innovative contemporary Marathi writer C.T. Khanolkar. The story, written in 1970 and set on the Konkan coast features a woman born of an ‘incident’ between an Englishman and a local fisherwoman, now only discussed as a hushed rumour except by a boatman who loudly curses the girl whenever he ferries his boat across the river.’

(I have edited the next and last line from the above text which is a comment on the movie.)

Ranajna Deshmukh known by her first name ‘Ranjana’ only was the actress who played the title role in this movie. She was also a distant relative of V. Shantaram. She was a famous actress of Marathi movies.

‘Chaani-1977’ had four songs written by Bharat Vyas and composed to music by Hridaynath Mangeshkar.

Today I am presenting a song from this movie which is sung by Lata Mangeshkar. Only audio of this song is available so far. I guess that this song is lip-synced on screen by Ranjana.

Let us wish Hridaynath ji a very happy birthday and healthy and peaceful life today.

Today also happens to be the birthday of our beloved Atulites Raja Saab and Mahesh ji’s daughter Baby Pooja. I wish both of them a very happy birthday and a healthy, wealthy, peaceful and exciting musical life ahead …

Over to the song now…

main to jaaungi oho ho re us paar

Today 18th August 2022 is the eighty-eighth birthday of Poet, Lyricst, Writer, Director, etc. Shri Sampooran Singh Kalra whom we know by his pen name ‘Gulzar’ (born on 18.08.1934).

Gulzar Saab has come a long way in the film industry starting from ‘Shriman Satyawadi’ (1960) and ‘Kabuliwaala’ (1961) to the recently released (on OTT) ‘Darlings-2022’ (where he wrote lyrics for a song).

Much has been written about him and most of us are well aware of his ‘cinematic excellence’ and his unique ‘poetry’ where he uses the ‘similes’ in his unique ways in his poetry and lyrics in Hindi Film Music.

There have been numerous posts on the blog about Gulzar Saab and there will be many coming in future. So, today, I am not going into the details of his movies and lyrics list which I like most or which have left an indelible mark on my mind. But I would like to mention here that while Gulzar Saab have done so much in all areas of writing, cinema, and poetry I have yet to read many of his works other than movies. However, in the case of movies I can say that I have watched many of the movies directed by him. And l loved them all.

One more thing which I am very fond of Gulzar Saab is his writings for children or his lyrics for the movies for children and the non-filmi albums of his for children (like ‘Karadi Tales etc). I would also like to mention his commentary in two audio albums one for film music i.e., ‘Fursat Ke Raat Din’ and one for Bhupen Hazarika’s song ‘Main Aur Mera Saaya’ which I like very much. Finally, I would like to mention his song for tele serial ‘Mirza Ghalib’ which is also one of my most favorite albums.

There are many things which one can write about him and his works in cinema and other than ‘cinema’. However, today we leave this for another day and straightway come to today’s song to celebrate Gulzar Saab’s birthday on the blog. (This song is lying with us since almost a decade now 😊).

This song is from the 1990 movie ‘Lekin’.

‘Lekin’ was directed by Gulzar for Dinanath Kala Mandir. Hridaynath Mangeshkar and Bal Phoole were the producers of this movie. It was presented by Lata Mangeshkar. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 29.08.1990.

It had Vinod Khanna, Dimple Kapadia, Amjad Khan, Alok Nath, Moon Moon Sen, Vijayendra Ghatge, Beena, Manohar Singh, Ram Mohan, Ajit Vachhani, Sunil Advani, Shabir Abbas, Masood Akhtar, Yash Sharma, GP Singh, Bashir Khan, Mohafiz Haider, S Madan, Harmeet Singh, Umesh Vyas, Mansi Upadhyay, Sapna Awasthy, Rashmi, Ahmed Siddiqui, and Baby Shabana Khan. Hema Malini made a guest appearance in this movie.

The story of this movie was written by Gulzar, who also wrote the screenplay, dialogues, and lyrics for this movie. Editing of this movie was done by Sadanand Shetty, Ravi, and Aadinath Mangeshkar.

This movie has eight soundtracks as mentioned on the blurb of the audio cassette of this movie. Music is composed by Hridaynath Mangeshkar. I like all songs of this movie very much and this is one of my most favorite albums. Today’s song is sung by Suresh Wadkar and on screen it is lip-synced by Vinod Khanna.

This movie is an interesting movie to watch, so nothing more about the movie here 😊

Let us listen to today’s song and enjoy Gulzar Saab’s poetry …

We wish Gulzar Saab a very happy birthday today and a happy, healthy and peaceful life ahead …

Over to the song now …

Lyrics

surmayee shaam is tarah aaye ae ae ae
surmayee shaam is tarah aaye
saans lete hain jis tarah saaye ae
surmayee shaam is tarah aaye
saans lete hain jis tarah saaye ae
surmayee shaam

koi aahat nahin badan ki kahin
phir bhi lagta hai tu yahin hai kahin
koi aahat nahin badan ki kahin
phir bhi lagta hai tu yahin hai kahin
waqt jaata sunaayee deta hai
tera saaya dikhayee deta hai ae
jaise khushboo nazar se chhoo jaaye

saans lete hain jis tarah saaye
surmayee shaam

din ka jo bhi pahar guzarta hai
koi ehsaan sa utarta hai
din ka jo bhi pahar guzarta hai
koi ehsaan sa utarta hai
waqt ke paaon dekhta hoon main
roz yeh chhaaon dekhta hoon main
aaaye jaise koi khayaal aaye
aaye jaise koi khayaal aaye
saans lete hain jis tarah saaye ae
surmayee shaam is tarah aaye
saans lete hain jis tarah saaye
surmayee shaam

4988 Post No. : 16878

Today we have a 2-part song from the film Guzara-1954.

The film was made by Aina pictures-owned by S.M.Yusuf. The film was produced and directed by S.M.Yusuf himself. he also did a small role in this film- the only film role he ever did in his film career. There were 3 lyricists- Raja Mehdi Ali Khan (5 songs), Fauk Jami (2 songs) and Munir Lucknowi (1 song) for the film’s 8 songs. Music Director was Ghulam Mohammad.

I have not seen this film. However, from what I have learnt about the film from various sources is that , the film was based on the life of a middle class family who finds it difficult to run the family in the limited income that the family had. The story concluded that mental happiness with our own people is the greatest happiness compared to rich living ! A typical Nehruvian philosophy- very popular in those times. Even big filmmakers like Mehboob Khan were also sold on this ideology. These were the days of rationing and shortages, increasing corruption and black marketing. The common man was broken in pieces but was fed the socialistic wine to keep him quiet !

The cast of the film was Karan Dewan, Paro, Jabeen jalil, Chand Burke, Baby Naaz, Romi, Tiwari, Balam and many others. This was the film in which actress Jabeen Jalil made her Debut.

In the early days of cinema, people joined the film industry for various reasons like…
1) joining filmline did not need any special skill
2) language, religion, education was not a consideration
3) need to earn
4) readiness to do any work

As the Talkie film era started, the requirements changed. For acting, one needed the ability to speak Hindi/Urdu fluently. A reasonably good looking personality and knowledge of singing were additional qualifications. For other technical departments, readiness to do hard work and a will to learn were required. During this phase many girls from singing families (read Tawaifs) were preferred and for them entry into films was easier compared to others. Many girls joined the filmline to get a good husband and settle as a housewife with dignity. Thus many Gujarati Sethiyas married actresses.

There was a very small but distinct category of artistes, who joined films as a “time pass’ or a passion for a short period. These artistes had no intention to continue in the film line.Their interests were varied and different from only doing work in films. included in this category were Classical singers like Manik Varma, Hirabai badodekar, Ram Marathe, Phiroz Dastoor, actresses like Shakuntala Paranjpye, Vasanti, Renuka Devi etc, writers like Dewan Sharar, Lyricists like Moti,B.A., MD like Mukund Rai Trivedi, actors like Kaycee Mehra, Shashi Kapoor Sr. etc, classical instrument players like Ravi Shankar, Pannalal Ghosh, Alla Rakha, Ali Akbar khan etc.

Nevertheless 99% of people joined because they needed to earn money. In the cast of today’s film Guzara-54, you see a name Jabeen Jalil. She is one such artiste who needed to earn money. Jabeen Jalil was a short petite but attractive actress. She was born on 1st April 1936 in Delhi, but was educated in Japan and Bombay, as her father was in foreign services of India.

She used to take part in college dramas and in one such drama the judges were Nigar Sultana and her director husband S.M.Yusuf. They offered her a film as a Heroine. Jabeen’s father had expired and only mother and younger brother were there. She accepted the offer. Her first film was Guzara in 1954. Her second film in 55 was Lutera. Her first hero was Karan Dewan and second was Nasir khan.
She became famous in New Delhi-56, in the role of Kishore’s sister Nikki’s role. She acted in 29 films, out of which 6 were unreleased. She also acted in 4 Punjabi films. She got a National award in 1962 for a Punjabi film in which her Hero was Prem Chopra.
She married Ashok Kak, a kashmiri Brahmin in 1968 and she did her last movie in 1974 Vachan. In 1989 they went to the US for 10 years and came back to Mumbai. Her son Divvij Kak is also an actor and Jabeen became a producer with Jabeen International.
She lives in Dadar, Mumbai nowadays.

Jabeen was a very short, thin and small frame girl. Some other actresses like her were Nimmi, Chand Usmani, and Smriti Biswas who all always looked like young girls.

The Hero of the film was Karan Dewan.

In Hindi films, there have been three actors who were very handsome and very lucky but zero in acting – Karan Dewan, Pradeep Kumar and Bharat Bhushan. They all appeared in leading roles opposite all leading actresses of their times. They had the best films, best songs and best roles. Karan Dewan had about 25 Silver Jubilees to his credit and was considered a lucky star. Bharat Bhushan had the most musical films to his credit like ‘Baiju Bawra’ (1952), ‘Shabaab’ (1954) and ‘Mirza Ghalib’ (1954) etc. Pradeep Kumar had ‘Anarkali’ (1953) and ‘Taj Mahal’ (1963).

All three had their brothers producing films for them. Gemini Dewan made films for Karan Dewan, R Chandra made films for Bharat Bhushan and Kalidas for Pradeep Kumar. Unfortunately, in later years, all three lost everything and died in poverty and neglectful anonymity. Karan Dewan was a manager with BR Chopra’s production company. When he died no one came for his funeral except for Chandrashekhar and Manmohan Krishan from the Cine Artists Association. Bharat Bhushan worked as a watchman in a film studio, in his last days. Even he died unsung and only the men from the Association were present at the cremation.

Pradeep Kumar’s case is the saddest. He lay seriously ill in the ICU of a Calcutta nursing home, abandoned by his relatives. The hospital was not discharging unless the bills were paid. Luckily one Mr. Pradeep Kondaliya, an estate agent, recognised him, despite his grown beard. He paid the huge outstanding bill of the hospital and took Pradeep Kumar to his home, where he passed away after a few days. He was cremated by his fan. Such is the film industry – cruel and ruthless, where the recognition lasts only till one is successful.

Dewan Karan Chopra aka Karan Dewan ( 6-11-1917 to 2-8-1979 ) youngest of three brothers, was born at Gujranwala, Punjab (now in Pakistan), British India. He studied in Lahore, where he became interested in Journalism and started editing a film magazine in Urdu, Jagat Lakshmi. One of the local distributors he met was Tarachand Barjatya, who was then the Manager of Chandanmal Inder Kumar’s distribution office at Lahore. Through his connection with Barjatya he landed in Calcutta, and in 1939, made his acting debut as Puran in the Punjabi feature film Puran Bhagat

Dewan started his film career with the role of Puran in Puran Bhagat in Punjabi in 1939 in Calcutta. It was produced by Raisaheb Sukhlal Karnani and directed by Roop K. Shorey’s father R. L. Shorey. His second film Mera Maahi (1941) was also a Punjabi film, directed by Shankar Mehta at Lahore and starring Ragini and Manorama. This was the movie in which he sang songs for the first time in the movies under the baton of legendary music director Shyam Sunder. Later, in Rattan, he sang for the first time in Hindi movies for Naushad. B R Chopra, then working as a film journalist in Lahore, helped Karan Dewan to get in touch with Devika Rani, who invited Dewan to come to Bombay. When this did not help Dewan get films, he taught “Urdu pronunciation to actors and actresses”.

In 1944, Karan Dewan acted in Rattan, a musical romantic drama, directed by M. Sadiq, which became one of the most popular films of that year. “A tremendous hit”, it paired Dewan with Swarnalata. His decisive film was Rattan (1944), which was produced by his brother Jaimini Diwan, and this movie turned out to be the biggest hit of 1944. He also sang songs in this movie under music director Naushad, and his song “Jab Tum Hi Chale Pardes” became popular. He sang in films such as Piya Ghar Aaja (1947), Mitti Ke Khiloune (1948) and Lahore (1949). His other important films were Zeenat (1945), Lahore (1949), Dahej (1950), Bahar (1951) and Teen Batti Char Rasta (1953). Known as a “jubilee star”, about twenty of his films are stated to have been jubilee (twenty-five weeks or more) hits.

Dewan married co-actress Manju in 1944 following the release of Rattan, in which she had a character role. By 1966, he was working as a casting agent for the film unit of Maya (1966). He continued to work in the 1960s and 1970s playing supporting parts in films such as Apna Ghar (1960), Shaheed(1965), Jeene Ki Raah (1969) and Nadaan (1971), with the last film in which he was credited, being Sohanlal Kanwar’s Atmaram (1979).

He worked in 73 films and sang 18 songs in 9 films. He worked with all leading actresses of his times, including Noorjehan and Nargis. At the end of his career, however, he was down financially and had to work as a Manager with B R Chopra’s company. When he died, except two workers of the Cine artistes association, no one else from the Film industry was present.

Today’s song is the 3rd song from the film Guzara-1954. In the part 2 song you will be surprised to hear the voice of Pt.Hridaynath Mangeshkar. It sounds just like a girl’s voice. I was confused but on inquiry, our Sadanand Kamath ji confirmed that the voice was that of Hridaynath only. Enjoy…

Lata Mangeshkar – 1929-2022

A lifetime of music passed by, and then today morning, that voice of the century descended into the forever sleep, from where no one returns. The fears have been there for almost a month – the time she spent in the hospital. And there were prayers also – prayers by millions – millions who have loved and revered this voice that has been singing for the past almost seventy five years. This voice will not be heard again.

And yet, this voice will continue to ring till there is time, and there are lovers of music. Her legacy and her memories will keep alive. Thousands of songs that have been sung by her and recorded – these songs will continue to please the ears till there music lives. The voice will live forever.

नाम गुम जाएगा
चेहरा ये बादल जाएगा
मेरी आवाज़ ही पहचान है. . .

Goodbye Didi. . . it has been a terrific inning – 1929 – 2022.

================================================

Recently when I updated my list of pending songs shared earlier, I noted that the top two songs are from the movie ‘Lekin’ (1990). Both the songs were shared long back in 2012. Since these were pending since long, I thought I should try to add a write-up to them and send for posting. I like all the songs from this movie very much, and I must have listened to them innumerable times.

I was staying at Kota (Rajasthan) then when the music for this film was released. I had bought the cassette for this film on 12.01.1991. (The film was dedicated to the ‘girl child’). Music was released by HMV in September’1990. That is now almost thirty-one years back now. Hushh…!! how time flies? … 😊 to me its only like few months back. Only thing is now I didn’t get to listen these songs regularly because the cassette-recorder-player has gone out of order and cannot be repaired now. (Maybe I need to buy a new one. Otherwise, I am afraid that the cassettes will also deteriorate).

I like the songs of this movie very very much, but I did never get to watch this movie. When I checked on internet the movie was already available, so I decided to watch it, and had watched it few weeks back. Sadly, the film available seems to be a re-recorded one and not an original print. Also, this version has the songs deleted from it. And that means all songs are deleted from this version. Though videos of the songs are available separately. But their absence from the movie takes out all the joy of enjoying the movie. But nevertheless, one can enjoy this movie for the mystery it contains.

I liked this movie very much. It has all the ingredients that I love to watch – the palaces of Rajasthan, the ruins, the sand-dunes, train journey, the inside view of the special coaches of the train (in this case it the first class coach, I think), library, books, mystery wrapped in time, wandering soul (we can see that 😊 in the movie), and above all the captivating and mesmerizing music – classical as well as folk of Rajasthan – the thrill of those ‘Ragas’ -the poetry in the songs – the divine singing voice – all these takes one to a different planet. I would not like to spoil the interest of those who intend to watch this movie, so I will not write much about the movie in details.

This movie is said to be inspired from one the famous Rabindranath Tagore story ‘Kshudhit Paashaan’ (Angry Stones).
[Auth. Note: I do have this story book in my library and this I realized when I read about this movie based on this story and then I remember, yes, I think I have this book. Then I look for it in the shelves and it was there. No mystery in this 😊 my younger daughter always pushes me to read the books that I have collected and not to add newer ones unless I read the older ones all 😊.]

Coming back to the today’s movie now. ‘Lekin’ was directed by Gulzar for Dinanath Kala Mandir. Hridaynath Mangeshkar and Bal Phoole were the producers of this movie. It was presented by Lata Mangeshkar. The star cast includes Vinod Khanna, Dimple Kapadia, Amjad Khan, Alok Nath, Moon Moon Sen, Vijayendra Ghatge, Beena, Manohar Singh, Ram Mohan, Ajit Vachhani, Sunil Advani, Shabir Abbas, Masood Akhtar, Yash Sharma, GP Singh, Bashir Khan, Mohafiz Haider, S Madan, Harmeet Singh, Umesh Vyas, Mansi Upadhyay, Sapna Awasthy, Rashmi, Ahmed Siddiqui, and Baby Shabana Khan. Hema Malini made a guest appearance in this movie. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 29.08.1990.

Story of this movie is written by Gulzar. Gulzar also wrote the screenplay, dialogues, and lyrics for this movie. Editing of this movie was done by Sadanand Shetty, Ravi and Aadinath Mangeshkar.

This movie had eight soundtracks as mentioned on the blurb of the cassette and the details are given below.

Coming back to the today’s song it is sung by Lata Mangeshkar and on screen lip-synced by Dimple Kapadia. This song is beautifully picturized in the ruins and deserts of Rajasthan. I am sure listening to this song will give one a lot of pleasure and will take one far away in the ‘desert’. I stayed at Kota for almost eight years, but never visited the ‘desert-triangle’. I wish I will visit them soon. Though during my stay, I visited palaces and forts at Jaipur, Udaipur, Chittorgarh, Bundi and at Kota. Whenever I visit there, I used to jokingly say my friends that in my previous birth I was a King and ruled there 😊 …

As mentioned above only one song from this movie has been posted on the blog on 26.10.2012 just few months more and this movie will complete a decade on the blog. Let us now listen to the today’s song.

Lyrics

main ek sadi se baithhi hoon
main ek sadi se baithhi hoon
is raah se koi guzra nahin
kuchh chaand ke rathh to guzre thhe
kuchh chaand ke rathh to guzre thhe
par chaand se koi utara nahin
main ek sadi se baithhi hoon
main ek sadi se baithhi hoon

din raat ke donon pahiye bhi
kuchh dhool udaa kar beet gaye
beet gaye
din raat ke donon pahiye bhi
kuchh dhool udaa kar beet gaye
main man aangan mein baithhi rahi
main man aangan mein baithhi rahi
choukhat se koi guzraa nahin
main ek sadi se baithhi hoon
main ek sadi se baithhi hoon

aakash bada boodhaa baba
sab ko kuchh baant ke jaata hai
jaata hai
aakash bada boodhaa baba
sab ko kuchh baant ke jaata hai
aankhon ko nichoda maine bahut
aankhon ko nichoda maine bahut
par koi aansoo utra nahin
main ek sadi se baithhi hoon
main ek sadi se baithhi hoon

Song-Badlegi ye duniya (Sanskaar)(1952) Singer-Hridaynath Mangeshkar, Lyrics-Shailendra, MD-Roshan

Lyrics(Provided by Avinash Scrapwala)

badlegi
ye duniya badlegi ee
badlegi ee
badlegi ye duniya
ik din badlegi
badlegi
aasmaan ki bitiyaa dharti
girkar phir se sambhlegi ee
badlegi duniya
ik din badlegi
badlegi
badlegi ye duniya aa

ham bachche laaye hain
apni qismat apni mutthhi mein
ham bachche laaye hain
apni qismat apni mutthhi mein
gud’di mein laal hazaaron
heere bikhre mitti mein
ik din ham bachchon ki toli
chaand sitaare chhoo legi
badlegi duniya
ik din badlegi
badlegi
badlegi ye duniya aa

oonche aasan baithhne waalon
dam bhar dharti par aao
oonche aasan baithhne waalon
dam bhar dharti par aao
jeewan reet seekh lo hamse
ya hamko sikhlaao
jeewan reet seekh lo hamse
ya hamko sikhlaao
har chhoti si baat pe tum
aapas mein lad marte ho
har chhoti si baat pe tum
aapas mein lad marte ho
phailaa itnaa zehar ki tum
ganga jal se bhi darte ho
bachchon ki maasoom nazar
ye reet badal kar dam legi ee
badlegi duniya
ik din badlegi
badlegi
badlegi ye duniya aa

soch liyaa hai
ham bachchon ne
nayaa zamaana kaisaa ho o
soch liyaa hai
ham bachchon ne
nayaa zamaana kaisaa ho o
maata jaisa dil ho jiska
pyaar pitaa ke jaisaa ho o
maata jaisa dil ho jiska
pyaar pitaa ke jaisaa ho
sukh mein jo lori gaaye ae
rote bachchon ko behlaaye ae
sukh mein jo lori gaaye ae
rote bachchon ko behlaaye ae
mel mohabbat mehnat mein
jo jeenaa marnaa sikhlaaye ae
duniya duniya tab hogi
jab hans ke har dukh jhelegi
badlegi duniya
ik din badlegi
badlegi
badlegi ye duniya aa

Sahir Ludhianvi & His Music Directors-1 – (one movie collaboration only)
————————————————————————————

Welcome all to this post.

Some of you would be surprised to see a ‘Sahir’ related post here today again, because we celebrated Sahir yesterday on his ‘Remembrance Day’ and paid our tributes.

But today’s day is also important for us. It the birthday of one of the founding members of this blog and our beloved Raja Saab. So here is wishing Raja Saab a very happy birthday and ‘many many happy returns of the day’ and ‘healthy, peaceful and ‘full of music- life’ ahead.

And I am sure he is going to enjoy this song in ‘Punjabi’ folk based song as I am aware of his love for ‘Punjabi folk based’ songs.

Well he is also a Sahir fan so a song from Sahir. And he is Kaka fan too. So, we have Rajesh Khanna making an appearance in this song in the movie ‘Dhanwaan-1981’, and if I am correct, he lip-syncs the one stanza in Amit Kumar’s voice. But that is not covered in the video of the song though the audio version of this song is having it.

Not only that we have one more ‘celebration’ here today.

Regulars on the blog might be remembering that I had mentioned in my earlier post with the ‘couplet song’ ‘aap abhi ishq ki tehzeeb se aagaah nahin’ from ‘Dil Hi To Hai’ (1963), that I had prepared an excel sheet for Sahir and his music directors with the number of songs in the movies where Sahir Ludhianvi was lyricist and was going to share it with a new series.

But somehow this series got delayed and what a better occasion than today. Today we discuss Sahir’s association with music directors where they collaborated for only ‘one movie’ (or ‘only one song in some cases).

Today’s song is composed by Hridaynath Mangeshkar from the ‘1981’ movie ‘Dhanwaan’.
And today 26th October’2020 (born on 26th October 1937) is the eighty-third birth anniversary of Hridaynath Mangeshkar. So here is wishing him too a very happy birthday and healthy and peaceful life ahead.

Coming to the list of music directors where Sahir had only one film association the list as given below; (I have tried to compile the details accurately as possible, and would request readers to bring to my notice if any mistake is there and forgive me for that error).

(*jageya jageya considered as two-part song)

Coming back to the today’s movie, Dhanwaan-1981” was directed by Surendra Mohan for ‘Film Nagar, Bombay’. It was produced by Sohanlal Kanwar.

This movie had Rajesh Khanna, Reena Roy, Rakesh Roshan, Shakti Kapoor, Pinchoo Kapoor, Vijayendra, Mazhar Khan (there were two persons with same name Mazhar Khan(reference-HFGK)), Aruna Irani, Birbal, Kamal Deep, Chandrashekhar, Ajit Kumar, S.N. Tripathi, Madhok Sharma, Baljeet Mineria, Master Vikas, Om Prakash and others.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 01.07.1981.

This movie had five songs (to be corrected on the blog) written by Sahir Ludhianvi and composed by Hridaynath Mangeshkar.

Here is the list of songs as per their appearing order in HFGK Vol-VI (1981-1985). Four songs have already been posted on the blog;

Ho balle balle bhai reshmi dupatta waaliye … Being posted today

Last but not the least, to add the above celebrations, this movie ‘Dhanwaan-1981’ gets ‘Yippeeee’ed’ on the blog today with all its songs covered.

Let us now enjoy today’s ‘nok-jhonk’ song 😊 sung by Lata Mangeshkar, Mahendra Kapoor and Amit Kumar…

Mazhar Khan and Aruna Irani are lip syncing in the voices of Mahendra Kapoor and Lata Mangeshkar respectively. I guess that the Amit Kumar’s voice is for Rajesh Khanna who resolves the ‘nok-jhonk’ and make Aruna Irani accept the proposal of Mazhar Khan. However, the video for the Amit Kumar part is not available. The lyrics as per the audio link which is a longer version.

Let us now enjoy this foot tapping entertaining song. 😊

Blog Day : 4190 Post No. : 15372

Today (7 january 2020) is the 63rd birthday of Reena Roy (DoB 7 january 1957). She made her debut in Hindi movies with B R Ishara who cast her in “Zaroorat”(1972) in a “bold” role. She was considered suitable for songs that are these days considered item songs. “Jaise Ko Taisa”(1973) may not be remembered today, but someone like me associate this movie with the song “able saawan mein jee dare rimjhim tan pe paani gire”. This song was picturised on Reena Roy and Jeetendra.

Reena Roy formed a hit pair with Shatrughan Sinha beginning with “Kallicharan”(1976) followed by “Vishwanath”(1978)- 16 movies in all. She also formed a hit pair with Sunil Dutt. She figured in “Naagin”(1976), “Jaani Dushman”(1979) etc with Sunil Dutt.

Reena Roy’s pairing with Jeetendra in typical Madrasi family dramas led to some memorable tear jerkers viz. Apnapan(1977), Badalte Rishtey(1978), Asha(1980), Pyaasa Saawan(1982), Arpan(1983) etc (22 movies in all). She won Filmfare award for best supporting actress for her role in “Apnapan”(1977).

Reena Roy also got to work with Rajesh Khanna, after he was no longer a superstar. They worked together in four movies. One such movie was “Dhanwan”(1983). Here Reena Roy plays the widow of Rakesh Roshan- another of her “strong” roles that she was known for in 1980s.

On this occasion, here is a song from “Dhanwaan”(1981). This song is sung by Lata. Sahir Ludhianvi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Hridaynath Mangeshkar.

The song is picturised as a stage dance song where Rajesh Khanna has bought the entire show and he is the only one in the hall watching the performance. The same situation would later arise with Jaya Prada and Amitabh Bachchan is another movie, viz “Sharaabi”(1984). 🙂

Missing Films of 1960s – 90
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

What a wonderful gem of a song this one is. The memory banks hold this from the radio listening days. Such a beautiful semi-classical creation, and also very popular in its time – I am amazed it has waited so long in the wings to make its place here on our blog.

The film is ‘Harishchandra Taramati’ from 1970. It is produced under the banner of Kala Mandal, Bombay and is directed by BK Adarsh. Star cast of this film is listed as Pradeep Kumar, Jaimala, Boby, BM Vyas, Jeevan, Shyama, Madan Puri, Tiwari, Bela Bose, Bipin Gupta, Helen, Madhumati, Jaishri Talpade, Tuntun, Sapru, Manorama, and Mehmood (Junior) etc.

The seven songs of this film are all written by Virendra Mishra and the music is created by Hridaynath Mangeshkar. The singing voice in this song is Lata ji, supported by chorus.

As I am checking the films from 1970, I came across this film, but it did not ring any bells at first. The mind is more familiar with the other film of same name from 1963, whose songs are penned by Kavi Pradeep. But then, as I checked the list of songs in this film, the mind sat up with a jerk when I read the title line of this song. All I could think of then was – WOW.

This song is such an exquisite creation, and such a pleasurable experience to listen. The opening verses simply capture the heart,

rimim jhimimwa
suno balamwa
naram garam hui saram
jhuke nainwa

For reference purposes, I checked the Raag-o-Pedia compiled by Shri KL Pandey. The listing informs us that this song is composed using three Raags – Bhairavi, Khamaaj and Malkauns.

As I started this post day before yesterday, I did not have access to the video of this song. Keen to know on whom this song is picturized, I started searching for this film. It turned out that although this film is more recent vintage than similar named films from 1952 and 1963, yet this one is more rare in terms of availability. After some messages exchanged with my other collector friends, I was able to secure the video clip of this song from one of them. The clip is not of good quality; it appears that it has been extracted from a VHS tape that has been over used. I have now uploaded this clip. Despite the poor quality, one can make out that this dance song is filmed on Helen, and a group of supporting dancers, and that Pradeep Kumar is the sole audience of this performance.

In the film, Pradeep Kumar plays the lead role of Raja Harishchandra. Sage Vishwamitra, who is jealous of his fame of truthfulness and righteousness, resolves to test the limits of Harishchandra’s good attributes. As the first step, he sends Menaka, the apsara from swarg lok to woo and enchant Harishchandra. Regulars will recall that Menaka is the same apsara whom Indra, the king of swarg lok, had sent to disturb the penance and meditation of Vishwamitra. In that episode, Vishwamitra had lost the battle, and was swayed by Menaka’s enchanting beauty. Now, he sends the very same apsara to sway the sensibility of Harishchandra. In the film, this episode is presented as a dream sequence.

Just listen to this song, as it makes its way through multiple ragas, all coming together for such a perfect listening experience. A wonderful re-discovery.
