Missing Films of 1960s – 90
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

What a wonderful gem of a song this one is. The memory banks hold this from the radio listening days. Such a beautiful semi-classical creation, and also very popular in its time – I am amazed it has waited so long in the wings to make its place here on our blog.

The film is ‘Harishchandra Taramati’ from 1970. It is produced under the banner of Kala Mandal, Bombay and is directed by BK Adarsh. Star cast of this film is listed as Pradeep Kumar, Jaimala, Boby, BM Vyas, Jeevan, Shyama, Madan Puri, Tiwari, Bela Bose, Bipin Gupta, Helen, Madhumati, Jaishri Talpade, Tuntun, Sapru, Manorama, and Mehmood (Junior) etc.

The seven songs of this film are all written by Virendra Mishra and the music is created by Hridaynath Mangeshkar. The singing voice in this song is Lata ji, supported by chorus.

As I am checking the films from 1970, I came across this film, but it did not ring any bells at first. The mind is more familiar with the other film of same name from 1963, whose songs are penned by Kavi Pradeep. But then, as I checked the list of songs in this film, the mind sat up with a jerk when I read the title line of this song. All I could think of then was – WOW.

This song is such an exquisite creation, and such a pleasurable experience to listen. The opening verses simply capture the heart,

rimim jhimimwa
suno balamwa
naram garam hui saram
jhuke nainwa

For reference purposes, I checked the Raag-o-Pedia compiled by Shri KL Pandey. The listing informs us that this song is composed using three Raags – Bhairavi, Khamaaj and Malkauns.

As I started this post day before yesterday, I did not have access to the video of this song. Keen to know on whom this song is picturized, I started searching for this film. It turned out that although this film is more recent vintage than similar named films from 1952 and 1963, yet this one is more rare in terms of availability. After some messages exchanged with my other collector friends, I was able to secure the video clip of this song from one of them. The clip is not of good quality; it appears that it has been extracted from a VHS tape that has been over used. I have now uploaded this clip. Despite the poor quality, one can make out that this dance song is filmed on Helen, and a group of supporting dancers, and that Pradeep Kumar is the sole audience of this performance.

In the film, Pradeep Kumar plays the lead role of Raja Harishchandra. Sage Vishwamitra, who is jealous of his fame of truthfulness and righteousness, resolves to test the limits of Harishchandra’s good attributes. As the first step, he sends Menaka, the apsara from swarg lok to woo and enchant Harishchandra. Regulars will recall that Menaka is the same apsara whom Indra, the king of swarg lok, had sent to disturb the penance and meditation of Vishwamitra. In that episode, Vishwamitra had lost the battle, and was swayed by Menaka’s enchanting beauty. Now, he sends the very same apsara to sway the sensibility of Harishchandra. In the film, this episode is presented as a dream sequence.

Just listen to this song, as it makes its way through multiple ragas, all coming together for such a perfect listening experience. A wonderful re-discovery.

Hullo Atuldom

Smita Patil (17th October 1955-13th December 1986) was an unusual actor much in the same template as Shabana Azmi if one may say so. She did justice to all the characters she was offered. One can distinctly remember her act in “Arth” as a person who was obsessed and insecure about her lover. Or her simply -being a prop-for-the-hero role in movies like Shakti, Namak Halal, Badle Ki Aag, Ghungroo etc. And we cannot forget her movies like Ardh Satya, Bazaar, Mirch Masala, Bhumika, Bhavani Bhavai, Umbartha (the last two movies mentioned were dubbed from Gujarati & Marathi respectively.) Umbartha was Subah in Hindi.

Smita Patil’s career spanned from 1974- 1989. Around 10-15 of her movies were completed and released after her death.
Remembering Smita Patil on her anniversary today with this song by Lata Mangeshkar from Subah (Umbartha 1982). The lyricist for this song is Narendra Sharma & music is by Hridayanath Mangeshkar.

For this movie Smita won the Marathi Rajya Chitrapat Puraskar for Best Actress.

This is a brief synopsis of the movie taken from Wikipedia. (I am resorting to it as I don’t want to go wrong about a movie I saw many years back)

Umbartha (translation: Threshold) is a 1982 Marathi film produced by D. V. Rao and directed and co-produced by Dr. Jabbar Patel. The film is a story of a woman’s dream to step outside the four walls of her home and bring change in the society. Smita Patil played the lead protagonist in the film for which she won. The film was adjudged as the Best Feature Film in Marathi at the 29th National Film Awards for “a sincere cinematic statement on the theme of a woman seeking to establish her identity by pursuing a career, even at the risk of alienation from her family”. The film is based on a Marathi novel “Beghar” (translation: Homeless) by Shanta Nisal and was also simultaneously made in Hindi as Subah with the same cast.

Sulabha Mahajan (played by Smita Patil) is a woman who dreams to step out of the four walls of the house, assume greater responsibility as a citizen and play an important role in shaping the society. She has passion to do something constructive for the abused, assaulted, neglected and traumatized womenfolk of the society she lives in. She gets a job offer as Superintendent of a Women’s Reformatory Home in a remote town of Sangamwadi. The job offer raises objections from her lawyer husband Subhash (played by Girish Karnad) and conservative mother-in-law who refuse to understand her need to move to the town and work for rehabilitation of the women. But her sister-in-law supports her by offering help in looking after her young daughter Rani. Determined Sulabha then goes ahead with her dream job.

She meets various challenges in her new endeavor. She starts with bringing discipline in the Home and also discovers frauds that take place there. But she is not helped by the managing committee which is filled with selfish and careless people. She hence decides to take steps against their sanction. She starts some classes to educate willing women and also marries off one of the inmates in order to give a new start to her life. She discovers how a local MLA Bane has been regularly using the inmates of the home to satisfy his sexual needs. Two of the inmates decide to run away but are forcefully brought back to the home. They both commit suicide by burning themselves. Sulabha is then questioned by committee and newspapers for her improper control on the home. An administrative enquiry is set up against her. It is then that she decides to resign and give up all her work and return home.

When she returns to her home she is happily welcomed by her sister-in-law but not so much by her mother-in-law. She then comes to know that her husband Subhash has been involved with another woman in her absence. His betrayal changes her mind and she again sets off to follow her dream work.

The film had Girish Karnad playing her husband, Shrikant Moghe (brother in law) Ashalata Wabgaonkar as her sis-in-law, Daya Dongre and a whole lot of Marathi actors of that time (if I am not wrong Kusum Kulkarni played the mother-in-law). Remembering a highly talented Smita today (13 december 2017) on her anniversary.

Hullo to all in Atuldom

A very Happy Holi (today on date 13 march 2017) to all who visit this blog.

Let there be lot of colour all around you; but not on your clothes??; makes washing difficult ??! And if there is a water shortage in your region please play dry holi- with only colours. Ideally the colours should be organic; they do less harm to the skin and eyes -this is what I have read I haven’t used them ever. I don’t even remember when and where was my last holi; possibly when I had just moved to Dahisar in Mumbai back in 2000. But I still love to see others forget themselves in this game of colours. And also, I love to think of all the famous delicacies that are made at Holi. I have heard of Ghujiyas and Kaanji Vadas, Thandaai and Bhaang. Another major attraction to Holi (for me) these days are the various songs that play on the Radio and TV channels. Enough to drive one down memory lane.

One thing about life that amazes me is its unpredictability. Let me explain. See when I got the email from Sudhirji in April 2014 informing me about the approaching 10K milestone I had decided to send as many songs as possible to Atul for reaching 10000 as soon as possible. And in right earnest I sent 4 songs over a week in my (personal) “March unto 10000” mission. And I must say Atul was good to me by posting all of them instantly. Then came my unexpected tour of Delhi; and I took a break from my list of romantic songs and sent a Delhi based song. This is one incident that proves that we plan something and we end up doing something else.

Varsha Ritu (1969) an album in an LP form was released by HMV to the delight of music lovers. Non-Film songs (NFS) were very much in vogue those days. Lata, Manna Dey, Begum Akhtar, Mukesh, Talat Mehmood, Mahendra Kapoor, Lakshmi Shankar, Sudha Malhotra and Mubarak Begum had each one NFS in that album. Music for all except the first three in this list was composed by an HMV staff artist Murli Manohar Swarup.

A few days back, I had discussed hamri munder boley kaaga sakhi ri from the film BAABLA (1953) on this blog. But well before this song, I had come across another song ‘lehron ke rele sang naiya mori khele’ from the same film sung by Hridaynath Mangeshkar. The voice sounded girlish. My first reaction was that it must have been some mistake on the part of uploader of the audio clip to name him as a singer of this song. My doubt stemmed from the fact that Hridaynath Mangeshkar was born on October 27, 1937. At the time of recording this song, he must be around 15 years by which time the voice of a boy should have turned in to a boyish or a male voice. So I kept this song in the loop for some time until I made fairly sure that this song was really sung by him.
