Today’s song is from an obscure film Suhagan-1942. The film was produced by Sunrise pictures, Bombay. It was directed by a veteran, foreign educated director, J P Advani aka Jagatrai Pesumal Advani and the music was composed by Shanti Kumar Desai, for songs written by M R Kapoor. The cast of the film was Jahan ara Kajjan, Kumar, Radha Rani, Jilloo, Majid, Kesharbai, Bhudo Advani, Mirza Musharraf, Kalyani etc etc.

PRARTHANA (1943) was produced under the banner of Minerva Movietone and it was directed by Sarvottam Badami. The star cast included Motilal, Jahanara Kajjan, Sabita Devi, K N Singh, Nimbalkar, Ghulam Hussein, Sadat Ali, Abu Bakar etc. There were 10 songs in the film and five of them were rendered by Jahanara Kajjan. All the songs penned by Dr Safdar Aah Sitapuri were set to music by Saraswati Devi. The main features of all the songs were that they were all based on Hindustani classical raagas.

“Bharthari” (1944) was a Navin Pictures Production which was directed by Chaturbhuj Doshi. The movie had Surendra as Bharthari, Mumtaj Shanti as Queen Pingala and Nagendra ( Pahadi Sanyal) as guru Gorakhnath, Kajjan, Sulochana, Dave, Babar etc.

I had no much idea about Jahanara Kajjan except that I was aware of a couple of her classical raag based songs in the film ‘Bharathari’ (1944). Very recently, I came across one more of her song ‘tumre darshan ka nainaa taras gaye ho’ from the film PRARTHANAA (1943). I heard this song for the first time and instantly liked it. The song is rendered in dadra style (crisp version of thumri ) based on raag Gaur-Malhar but with typical filmy musical orchestration of early 40s.
