Several years ago, I read a tale that made my blood boil. It was about a 96 year old lady, whose palatial house was snatched away forcibly from her by greedy land grabbers and she was forced to stay in the servant quarters of her own prime property. She was no ordinary lady either. she was the first female IAS officer of India.
When media got wind of this fact, the people who had usurped her property hurriedly brought her back to the mansion to “prove” to the media that she was very much the “owner” of her property.
Law abiding people earn some amount for their living and then try to live within them. Then there are some ambitious people who work hard and improve their earning and rise in economic status. They still live within their earning.

The 1965 film ‘Johar Mehmood in Goa’ is a veritable treasure house of wonderful songs and music. A popular hit in its own time, this film still continues to be known for the songs. Of the total of eight songs, four song are already represented on this blog. This duet here now becomes the fifth song from this film to make it here.

I S Johar was quite a maverick character in Hindi movies. He tended to make fun movies. His movies were inspired by the British series “Carry on..”. The titles of this movies, that took an irreverent view of things, tended to be along the lines of “Johar in …..”.

The general impression of a qawwaali is that is sung by a group of singers and musicians together. Either it is one group that is presenting, with one or two lead singers, a number of other singers providing the chorus, and some members of the group are playing the musical instruments. Or it is a presentation by two groups composed as described above, who may be competing with each other, in presenting ideas about a specific theme. This latter variation is called ‘baitbaazi’ .

“Johar Mehmood in Goa” (1965), as the title suggests, is a movie starring I S Johar and Mehmood. The two go to Goa in a bid to liberate it. Yes, Goa was still under Portuguese occupation till 1961 while the rest of India had got independence in 1947 itself. It was in 1961, when it finally became a part of India.
