The 1965 film ‘Johar Mehmood in Goa’ is a veritable treasure house of wonderful songs and music. A popular hit in its own time, this film still continues to be known for the songs. Of the total of eight songs, four song are already represented on this blog. This duet here now becomes the fifth song from this film to make it here.
Produced and directed by IS Johar under his own banner of Johar Films, Bombay, this film presented a chapter in the history of Goa, and its fight for independence from the Portugese rule. This song is performed on screen by Mehmood and Simi, both are disguised as an old couple. In the film, both are members of a revolutionary group that is fighting for the freedom of Goa. From the song picturization, it is amply clear that both are on the run, being pursued by the police forces.
The songs of this film have been contributed by Qamar Jalaalabaadi, Akhtar Romani, Farooque Kaiser. And the music is by Kalyanji Anandji. This particular song is from the pen of Qamar Jalaalabaadi. Besides the (one of the two) lead couples in this film, the star cast includes IS Johar, Sonia Sahni, Surendra Nath, Sulochana, Kamal Kapoor, Lila Chitnis, Mukri, Sapru, Ulhas, Murad.
Mehmood and Simi, in disguise, join a children’s party, and then perform this song. Members of the police force also join the scene, as this song in this progress. And near the end, as their disguise is getting exposed, the two make a run for it, to the tune of a parody sung to the tune of “Jo Waada Kiya Wo Nibhaana Padega”.
This singing voices are those of Kishore Kumar and Shamsad Begum. This may be a rare occasion where Simi has lip synced to the voice of Shamshad Begum.
