In the late 60s, there was a time when I would watch one Hindi film almost every week-end in the theatre. The one aspect of the films which used to irritate me at that time was actors suddenly going into singing mode thus interrupting, like a speed breaker on the highway, the smooth flow of the narration. Some people would even walk out of the theatre as soon as the song started on the screen and come back only after the end of the song. Of course the audience would not do that when a song is melodious and well picturised.

July 14th is the 37th death anniversary of the great maestro Madan Mohan ( 25/06/1924 – 14/07/1975). An artillery man in the army during the second world war, he aspired to become an actor in the Hindi film industry. After the end of second world war, he quit army and came to Bombay (Mumbai). He did act in a few films like ‘Shaheed’ (1948) but the almighty seemed to have already decided him to be a music director. His father, Rai Bahadur Chunnilal Kohli was a big name in the Hindi film industry ( being partner in Bombay Talkies and later Filmistan) in the 40s. But he was against his son joining the film industry. As a result, Madan Mohan had to struggle a lot to get an entry into Hindi film industry of his own efforts. He started his career as an assistant to music directors Shyam Sundar and S D Burman sometime in the late 40s.

“Bahaana”(1960) was a Silver Films Production. It was produced by Ram Kumar and directed by M Kumar. The movie had Mehmood, Meena Kumari, Sajjan, Krishna Kumari, Sheela Vaz, Helen, Sulochana Latkar, Anwar, Kumar, Pramila, Azurie, Anwari, Nissar etc in it.

“Footpath”(1953) was a Ranjit Movie Company Production. It was directed by Zia Sarhadi. The movie had Dilip Kumar, Meena Kumari, Anwar Hussein, Ramesh Thapar, Achla Sachdev, Ramesh Thakur, Kuldip Kaur, Akhtar Farooqui, P. Kailash, Jankidas, Maruti, Sumati Lajmi etc in it.

“Ek Hi Raasta”(1956) was produced and directed by B R Chopra. As was his wont, this movie too was on a socially progressive theme of widow remarriage which was quite bold for the time and as a result it was a commercially risky proposition for the movie. But B R Chopra pulled it off and the movie became a commercial success and it was critically acclaimed too.
