The technology of recording Hindi movie songs in the earlier decades was not very advanced. It was not possible to use the same recording for both the movie as well as the record companies, so the same song was recorded twice- once for the movie sound track, and another time for the record company.

I had never heard of this movie called “Angaarey” (1954) not had I heard any songs from this movie. This movie had Nasir Khan and Nargis in it alongwith Pran and others.

Some times name of the movie gives you an idea what to expect. If the title of a movie begins with the adjective “Chhoti” and it is followed by a common noun depicting a female person then you can expect a movie full of sacrifices and sad songs. Movie makers have left no such combination unused while choosing titles for their movies.

This is a very well known song- in fact an iconic song. This song is a bullock cart song sung by Mukesh. All these days I thought that this song was from a Raj Kapoor movie. So it came as a surprise to me when I realised that this song is actually from a Dilip Kumar movie.

“Anhonee” (1952) is one of the lesser known movies with Raj Kapoor and Nargis in it. The movie apparently failed at the box office. The songs of this movie are decent songs to listen to, though.

In Hindi movies, one actor normally lip sync in the voice of one playback singer. But there are exceptions, when he/she sings different songs in the voice of different singers.

Kishore Kumar made his debut as a playback singer in 1948 when he sang for Dev Anand in “Ziddi” (1948). For nearly two decades after that, he remained a marginal singer who only sang for himself and occasionally for others (read Dev Anand).
