When I watched this song, the first thing that occured to me was that this scene, if not the entire movie, was definitely inspired from the Sanskrit novel called “Rajtarangini” written by the famous Sanskrit scholar Bilhan. In that story, a music tutor is employed to teach music to the princess of a state. Afraid that the two may feel attracted to each other if they come face to face, the two are separated from each other by a curtain. The princess is told that the music tutor is ugly and the music totor is told that the princess is blind.

Wow, what a song ! I have listened to this song many a times even though I did not have an inkling about which movie this song was from, or even who the singers were. I thought that Mukesh and Lata were the singers. But I find now that the female voice is Suman Kalyanpur. I think Suman Kalyanpur has sung similar number of songs as Mukesh and she had a Mukesh like midas touch too. A large number of her songs have gone on to become very popular, just like how it was with Mukesh.

India of 1960s was a much more simple and uncomplicated nation, where cynicism about the nation and its leaders had yet to take roots. People actually looked upto the national leaders. Every household compulsorily had the pictures of national leaders on their drawing room walls. Framed photographs of Mahatma Gandhi, Rajendra Prasad, and Jawaharlal Nehru were there in all households.
