Today’s song is from an almost unknown film Daku Bhupat-1960.

This was a dubbed film, originally made in Telugu as ” Raja Nandini”-1958. The system of spelling the proper nouns in Southern languages is different from most western or North Indian languages. I believe it all depends on the type of alphabet a language has. Some alphabets which are present in Devanagari script languages (like Marathi or Hindi for example) are not present in southern languages. So sounds like T and TH are both spelled as th. Thus Lalita in Hindi becomes Lalitha in south.

Today’s song is from the film Gul E Bakawali-1956.

Wild and fertile imagination has been a tool of entertaining mankind from ancient times. Today, old people tell tales to youngsters like they were told by their grandparents and so on. This has been going on and in the process, many creative authors chipped in their ‘ Two Cents ” to those existing stories enriching them further. Thus the child in the Adult man has always been provided fodder for his satiation for Romance and Thrill.

I am presenting a dance song ‘ kya kya kahoon re Kanha’ from PIYA MILAN (1958). I came across this song just a couple of days ago while searching for rare songs of the 40s on Dr. Surjit Singh’s website. Listening to this song was like ‘Song to Tickle your Memory’ as Sudhir ji has called it in one of the series for his articles. I had heard this song on Vividh Bharti in my younger days but had completely forgotten about the existence of this song. Fortunately, the video clip of this song is available which revealed that this was a classical dance song.

“Daku Bhupat” (1960) is an extremely obscure movie by now. The movie was a Jalaruha Production movie. Ramesh Gupta was the director and the movie had N T Rama Rao, Anjali Devi, Ramesh Kumar, Nandu, Majmudar etc in it. It appears that the movie was a remake of some hit Telugu movie, or perhaps dubbed version of the Telugu movie. Not just the actors of Telugu movie industry, even singers from South Indian movie industry were used in this movie. In other words, the songs were resung in Hindi by South Indian singers and used in the Hindi version.
