Today’s song is from an unusual film Parbat pe apna Dera -1944.
Made by V.Shantaram for his own banner Rajkamal Kalamandir, the film was also directed by him. The music was by Vasant Desai for the songs written by Dewan Sharar-who wrote the film’s story also. For the 9 songs of this film, as many as 7 singers were used, like Parshuram, Vasant desai, Khan mastana, Naseem Akhtar, Zohrabai Ambalewali, Ameerbai Karnataki and Lalita Deulkar.

“Shakuntala” (1943), as the name suggests, was about the mythological tale of Shakuntala and Dushyanta as contained in Mahabharat. Shakuntala’s son was Bharat (according to legends-the county was named after him) and his descendents were Kaurav and Pandav. The tale of Shakuntala was described by Kalidas in his Sanskrit drama called “Abhigyaan Shankuntalam”.

In the early era of Talkie films the Film Companies which were well known were Imperial, New Theatres, British Dominion, Kohinoor, Krishna, Maharashtra, Ranjit, Saraswati, Sharada film company etc. Most of these companies continued from the silent era. Slowly many film companies stopped or got merged with existing companies. But one name stood out even in those days and that was PRABHAT FILM COMPANY or PFC.

“Shakuntala”(1943) is a mythological movie that had actors like Chandra Mohan, Jayshree, Ameena, Nimbalkar, Nana Palsikar etc in it. This story was based on Sasnkrit story “Aabhigyan Shakuntalam” written by the great Sanskrit author Kalidas.

I have come across a forgotten movie from the past. The movie is called “Parbat Pe Apna Deraa”(1944). This movie was made by V Shantaram and it had Ulhas and Vanmala in lead roles.
