During early 1950s, the biggest name in male playback singing was Talat Mehmood, and like Suraiyya on the distaff side, he was foraying into acting too. In fact, many music directors at that time thought that he was not avaialble to sing for other actors ( like Suraiyya) and as a result he stopped getting offers for playback singing for other actors.

I have posted a few songs from “Shabnam” (1964). I just realised that there was another movie of the same name as early as 1949. This movie had Dilip Kumar and Kamini Kaushal in lead roles.

In late 1950s, party songs based on western music and accompanied by a dance by a female had become a rage in Bollywood movies. “Mera Naam chin Chin Choo” from “Howrah Bridge” (1958) is a good example of such a song. This song was sung by Geeta Dutt and it was picturised on Helen.

This movie, called “Adal e Jahaangir” or “Adil e Jahaangir” ( any Idea what it may mean ? ) was a mythological movie and G P Sippy was the maker of this movie.

Saanwariyaa tumhaari nazar laagi

I do not think too many people may be aware of this movie called “Aadil e Jahangir”(1955). I certainly was not. I recently found out that this movie was directed by G P Sippy, who is better known today for being the producer of “Sholay” (1975). This movie was one of the five movies that he directed. Otherwise he was mainly a producer of movies.

“Chhaliya”(1960) was a Raj Kapoor movie and it had Mukesh singing for him as usual. But its music team was not Shailendra and Shankar Jaikishan. Rather, Qamar Jalalabadi had written the songs and Kalyanji Anandji, then in their early years as music directors had got this big break to compose music in this movie. This movie incidentally was the debut movie for director Manmohan Desai as well.

Movies, unlike books are meant for the lowest common denominator of the population, and that includes lots of people who are illiterates and of modest intelligence.That is why Bollywood movies have storylines where even the obvious needed to be stated clearly lest the audience be left in doubt.
