Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Chhaliya mera naam

Posted on: April 6, 2009

Movies, unlike books are meant for the lowest common denominator of the population, and that includes lots of people who are illiterates and of modest intelligence. That is why Bollywood movies have storylines where even the obvious needed to be stated clearly lest the audience be left in doubt.

Raj Kapoor had the pulse of his audience, and his movies would have an introduction song so that every audience would be clear about who the “Aawara” in the movie was.

Here is the introduction song from the movie “Chhaliya” where the hero explains that his name is Chhaliya, and he greets everyone irrespective of their religions. He announces himself as the prince of the poor who plays not with swords ( like real princes) but with tears.

It is a song with some philosophy in its lyrics. It is written by Qamar Jalalabadi and the music is composed by Kalyanji Anandji. This is indeed one of the better known “introduction” songs in Bollywood movies.

Song-Chhaliya mera naam (Chhaliya) (1960) Singer-Mukesh, Lyrics-Qamar Jalalabadi, MD- Kalyanji Anandji

Lyrics

chhaliya mera naam, chhaliya mera naam
chhaliya mera naam, chhaliya mera naam
hindu muslim sikh isaai sab ko mera salaam
hindu muslim sikh isaai sab ko mera salaam
chhaliya mera naam, chhaliya mera naam
hindu muslim sikh isaai sab ko mera salaam
chhaliya mera naam

dekho logon, zara to socho, bani kahaani kaise
kahin pe khushiyaan kahin pe gham hai
kyun hota hai aise
kyun hota hai aise
waah re tere kaam
kahin subah kahi shaam
hindu muslim sikh isaai sab ko mera salaam
chhaliya mera naam
chhaliya mera naam

rok rahen hain, raahen meri, naina teekhe-teekhe
ham to khaali baat ke rasiya, ishq nahin ham seekhe,
ishq nahin ham seekhe
jahaan bhi dekha daam, padhta wahin kalaam
hindu muslim sikh isaai sab ko mera salaam
hindu muslim sikh isaai sab ko mera salaam
chhaliya mera naam

main hun gareebon ka shahzaada, jo maango wo de doon
shahzaade talwaar se khelen, main ashkon se kheloon,
main ashkon se kheloon
mehnat mera kaam, dena us ka kaam
hindu muslim sikh isaai sab ko mera salaam
chhaliya mera naam
chhaliya mera naam
hindu muslim sikh isaai sab ko mera salaam
chhaliya mera naam

Lovely number and a typical Mukesh song.

The original version of this song had different wordings. However, due to objection from censor board, the wordings were changed as shown above. The earlier version was as follows
chhaliya mera naam, chhalna mera kaam
chhaliya mera naam, chhalna mera kaam
hindu muslim sikh isaai sab ko mera salaam
hindu muslim sikh isaai sab ko mera salaam
chhaliya mera naam, chhalna mera kaam
hindu muslim sikh isaai sab ko mera salaam
chhaliya mera naam

dekho logon, zara to socho, bani kahaani kaise
Tumne meri roti chheenee hamne chheene paise.
kyun hota hai aise
kyun hota hai aise
waah re tere kaam
kahin subah kahi shaam
hindu muslim sikh isaai sab ko mera salaam
chhaliya mera naam
chhaliya mera naam

rok rahen hain, raahen meri, naina teekhe-teekhe
ham to khaali maal ke rasiya, ishq nahin ham seekhe,
ishq nahin ham seekhe, jahaan bhi dekha daam, wahin nikaala kaam
hindu muslim sikh isaai sab ko mera salaam
hindu muslim sikh isaai sab ko mera salaam

main kainchee se kheloon
mehnat mera kaam, dena us ka kaam
hindu muslim sikh isaai sab ko mera salaam
