Today’s song is from the Cult film Har Har Mahadev-1950.

The film was produced and directed by Jayant Desai for his own Banner Jayant Desai Productions, Bombay. The cast of the film included Nirupa Roy, Trilok Kapoor, Durga Khote, Jeevan, Meenakshi, Kusum Deshpande, Hira Sawant and many more. The lyrics were written by Ramesh Shastri (8) and Saraswati Kumar Deepak (2).

For many years now, and please correct me if I am making this statement in error – for many years now, I do not recall having seen or heard about a film on mythological theme coming from the mainstream film industry. Maybe it is a sign of time, to be aware of. The industry seems to be getting more and more aligned with a global market and a global audience, that this genre of movie making appears to be dying out. And to think that the film industry started off in the first place with stories and themes based on mythology. Even in the 70s and somewhat in the 80s, some production banners dared to attempt making such films, but in the 90s and after, this genre has pretty much disappeared from the screen.

I can barely believe that this song is 60 years old, and that it was regarded as an old song even during my childhood. But just listening to this song even today makes me feel like I am getting a breath of fresh air.

This song is magic, an iconic song among iconic songs. It is from that perennial favourite “Barsaat”. I wonder how many great songs this movie had. I have given up counting them. Shankar Jaikishan was the music director and Lata the singer. And what about the lyricist who penned this memorable song ? It was someone called Ramesh Shastri. Kudos to him for writing this much loved, much sung and much copied lyrics.
